Chapter 14: Secrets and Surprises
The training room at the villa buzzed with tension as Ethan stood across from Xanthos. The vast space, with its high ceilings and ancient symbols etched into the floor, seemed almost alive, crackling with latent energy. Ethan had expected an intense day of activities but felt a mix of frustration and anticipation instead. Xanthos, noticing Ethan’s impatience, offered a knowing smile.
"Young master, before diving into anything advanced, you must first master the basics," Xanthos began. "Each of these techniques has its roots in ancient arts. Perfecting them will allow you to develop your own unique style in time."
Xanthos raised his hand, and a shadowy mist began to form around it. "This is called Shadow Swipe," he said. Suddenly, with a swift, sweeping motion, Xanthos cut through the air, and the mist followed his hand like a dark blade. The air seemed to split, and Ethan felt a rush of wind blow past him. "It’s a quick, slicing move. Effective for disorienting your enemies and creating openings in close combat."
Ethan's eyes widened, impressed by the sharpness and speed of the attack. "Can I try?" he asked.
"Of course," Xanthos replied. "But be mindful of your control. Too much force, and you'll lose balance."
Ethan focused, summoning his energy, and mimicked the sweeping motion. A shadow trailed his hand, but it was faint and dissipated quickly. He stumbled slightly. "Damn," he muttered under his breath.
Xanthos chuckled. "Patience, Ethan. It takes time."
Next, Xanthos clenched his fist, and a faint red aura began to emanate from it. "This is Blood Burst," he explained, releasing a quick burst of energy. A ripple of crimson power shot forward, striking a target dummy across the room. It wasn’t a devastating blow, but the dummy seemed to wither as if weakened from within. "This technique channels a burst of your blood energy. It doesn't cause immediate devastation but weakens your opponent over time. A slow but effective drain."
Ethan could see the potential in wearing down an enemy without expending too much energy. "So, it's like a venom," he observed. "You use it to tire them out."
"Exactly," Xanthos confirmed. "Subtle, yet powerful."
Moving on, Xanthos raised his hands, and his fingernails elongated into claws that glowed with a dim, eerie light. "This is Night Claw," he said, slashing through the air. His claws left glowing trails, and the cuts seemed to shimmer before fading. "A precise, more damaging attack. These claws can cut through most defenses with ease."
Ethan watched closely, noticing the precision in Xanthos's movements. "So it’s about finesse, not just strength," Ethan mused, trying to understand the technique’s underlying strategy.
"Precisely," Xanthos said with a nod. "Power is nothing without control."
With a subtle gesture, Xanthos summoned a swirling mist around his body, his form becoming blurry and hard to see. "This is Gloomy Veil," he explained, his voice seeming to come from all directions. "An ability to cloak yourself in shadows, providing temporary concealment. Perfect for evasion or setting up an ambush."
Ethan squinted, trying to track Xanthos's movement. "It’s like becoming a living shadow," he thought aloud. He could see how this could be useful against multiple foes or in tricky terrains.
Suddenly, Xanthos vanished and reappeared behind him. "Always be aware of your surroundings," Xanthos said, startling Ethan.
"Alright, what's next?" Ethan asked, a bit more enthusiastic now.
Xanthos bared his fangs, which began to glow with a dark, crimson hue. "This is Vampire Fang," he said. "By focusing your energy into your fangs, you deliver a bite that does more than wound. It can drain a small amount of blood, restoring your vitality." He mimicked the biting motion on the air, the power radiating from his jaws evident.
Ethan instinctively touched his own fangs, feeling the potential energy simmering there. "It’s not just for feeding," he realized, "but for combat as well."
Xanthos then moved to the center of the room, his hands glowing with a dark aura. "Now, Dark Pulse," he announced, thrusting his palms forward. A wave of dark energy burst out, creating a shockwave that rattled the entire room. The target dummies were thrown back violently, crashing into the walls. "A powerful shockwave to knock back enemies and create space. Perfect for crowd control."
Ethan shielded his eyes from the force. "That’s… intense," he said, the power of the technique still reverberating through his body.
"Indeed," Xanthos replied. "But it requires a lot of energy. Use it wisely."
Next, Xanthos moved silently, his feet barely touching the ground. "And this is Silent Step," he said, almost whispering. "Enhanced stealth. Your footsteps become silent, and you move with reduced visibility. Ideal for getting in or out of situations without being detected."
Ethan tried to follow Xanthos’s movement but found it nearly impossible to keep track. "A perfect assassin’s skill," he commented.
Finally, Xanthos looked up towards the high windows where moonlight filtered through. "And now, the Moonlit Strike," he said. He raised his sword, letting the moonlight bathe the blade. As he swung, a blinding arc of silver energy cut through the air, striking a target with a force that shattered it to pieces. "This technique uses the power of the moon to enhance your strike. Under the moon’s gaze, it becomes a devastating blow."
Ethan could feel the raw power of the Moonlit Strike and how it resonated with the very essence of a vampire. "So it’s all about using the environment to your advantage," he concluded.
Xanthos nodded approvingly. "You’re starting to understand. These are just the basics, Ethan. Master these, and you’ll be able to mix and modify them into something uniquely yours. Develop your own power, and no one will stand against you."
The training ended, but Ethan felt a mix of disappointment and impatience. He had hoped for more combat, a real test of strength. Instead, he felt like he had been through a long lecture. "I was hoping for something more intense," he muttered as he left the training room.
Xanthos heard him but said nothing, only smiling to himself.
As Ethan arrived back at the villa around seven o’clock, he saw two familiar figures waiting for him—Amelia and Lila. His heart began to race, and he let out a sigh. "Not again," he mumbled, feeling his face flush slightly as he remembered how often he had been caught between these two.
Both girls noticed him immediately and made their way toward him. Amelia, always the first to speak her mind, wore a look of concern. "Ethan," she called, her voice a mix of irritation and affection. "Why didn’t you tell me you’d be busy all day? I was waiting to see you."
Lila, not to be outdone, quickly added, "And do you think you’re the only one who cares, Amelia? I’ve been waiting for him too, you know." She crossed her arms and gave a small huff, her eyes narrowing slightly as she glanced at Amelia.
Ethan sighed, feeling the pressure building around him. He wasn’t quite ready for another round of their banter. "Can we all just relax for a moment?" he asked, trying to keep the peace.
But Amelia wasn’t about to let things slide. She took a step closer, crossing her arms. "Fine, let’s calm down," she said, her tone challenging. Then, without missing a beat, she looked directly at Ethan. "Ethan, would you like to go on a date with me tomorrow?" she asked boldly, her cheeks flushing a delicate pink.
Lila’s eyes widened, and she quickly stepped in front of Amelia, refusing to back down. "Why should he go out with you? Ethan, how about a date with me instead? I promise it’ll be a lot more fun." She gave him a playful wink, her smile sweet but determined.
Ethan’s face reddened. He hadn’t expected such direct invitations from both of them, especially not at the same time. Caught in the middle, he glanced toward the doorway, where he noticed Xanthos, his uncle, leaning against the frame with a bemused expression on his face. The older man was clearly enjoying the unfolding drama.
"Who is that?" Amelia asked, noticing Xanthos for the first time. "Ethan, you’ve never mentioned him before."
Ethan chuckled awkwardly. "That’s Xanthos. He’s my uncle, and he’s… very close to me," he said, trying to keep things simple. "He’s been with me since I found out about… my family’s history."
Xanthos stepped forward, offering a polite nod. "A pleasure to meet both of you, Amelia and Lila," he said with a calm smile. His presence was both reassuring and slightly intimidating, making both girls stand a bit straighter. They exchanged surprised glances, clearly not expecting to meet a family member.
Lila, who knew more than she let on, hesitated slightly before speaking. She had promised not to reveal Ethan's secret but couldn’t help but feel uneasy meeting someone who was so close to it. "It’s nice to meet you, Xanthos," she said softly, her smile polite but guarded.
After a brief pause, Xanthos turned to Ethan with a mischievous grin. "Young master," he began, his tone teasing, "you should keep certain secrets even from your… girlfriends."
Ethan's face turned beet red. "They’re not my girlfriends, Xanthos!" he protested, his voice rising slightly in embarrassment. The last thing he needed was for his uncle to stir the pot.
Xanthos chuckled, clearly enjoying himself. "Ah, you’re just like your father," he said with a nostalgic smile.
Ethan’s embarrassment quickly shifted to curiosity. "What do you mean by that?"
"Your father," Xanthos began, his eyes twinkling with a hint of amusement, "was quite popular in his younger days. He had many admirers over the years."
Amelia and Lila both perked up, intrigued by this new piece of information. "Really? What was he like?" Amelia asked, her eyes wide with curiosity. Lila remained silent, her mind clearly working through what this might mean for Ethan.
Ethan, eager to know more, pressed further. "What happened to him?"
But Xanthos’s expression shifted, becoming more serious and thoughtful. "That is a story for another time," he said softly, his tone now carrying a weight of history and perhaps even regret. "For now, young master, I suggest you get some rest. Tomorrow is a new day."
Ethan wanted to ask more, to uncover the mysteries surrounding his father’s past, but he sensed that Xanthos wasn’t ready to share. Instead, he nodded reluctantly. "Alright. Goodnight, Xanthos."
As Xanthos gave a slight bow and walked away, Amelia and Lila turned back to Ethan, both clearly still waiting for an answer regarding their date proposals.
"Look," Ethan said with a weary smile, trying to diffuse the tension. "We can… talk more about this tomorrow, okay? It’s been a long day."
Both girls, though disappointed, nodded in agreement, still eyeing each other cautiously. Amelia gave him a soft smile, her eyes still holding a hint of hope. "Alright, Ethan. I’ll see you tomorrow then," she said quietly.
Lila nodded as well, her expression more playful. "Yeah, tomorrow," she added, though her tone suggested she wasn’t going to give up anytime soon.
Ethan watched them leave, his heart still pounding from the intensity of the encounter. As he retreated to his room, his mind continued to swirl with thoughts of the two girls and the new mysteries about his father that Xanthos had hinted at. Tomorrow would surely bring new challenges, but for now, he was just grateful for a moment of calm and the chance to get some sleep.
