Chapter 65
The door slammed behind with a force that shook the walls.
Carter stormed into the estate, his robes flaring behind him wildly. The servants shrank back into the walls too afraid to speak, too wise to be seen. His fists trembled with rage. The humiliation he just faced was enough to have him blind with anger.
"Where is she?" he snapped.
The servants whimpered, the air filled with their pathetic scared scents. Veronica's right hand maid rushed out, panicking.
"My lord….surely there must be." She didn't get to complete her words as Carter slapped her so hard she fell to the ground.
Her cheeks imprinted with his large hand prints,
"Where is my daughter?" He asked again and the girl pointed towards the door shakily.
Carter wasted no time. He kicked the door such force it cracked at the hinges.
Veronica jerked upright from her seat by the window, startled. A goblet of wine in her hand trembled before tipping over, red spilling across the white rug.
"Father?" she said, standing slowly, brows raised in confusion.
Before she could take another step, his hand connected with her cheek.
The slap vibrated through the room.
Veronica stumbled, one hand flying to her face, the sting immediate. "What—!"
"You lied to me," Carter spat, his chest heaving. "You told me you had it handled. You said this wouldn't come back to us."
"I— What are you talking about, father?"
Carter scoffed. He was stupid to have believed everything she said. He didn't think it thorough. "What am I talking about?" He snarled and the woman flinched.
"Father…"
"Don't father me! The girl from the festival. The one Radek messed up with. Didn't you say you took care of it?" He asked.
Veronica looked even more confused. "I did fathers it's all taken care of." She said.
"Taken—- taken care of?" Carter snarled and again slapped her on her other cheek, sending her stumbling back.
"Taken care means it's been sorted. There's no problem there but what you've done! What've you've done is nothing because you took care of nothing!"
"What?" Veronica croaked out.
"You did nothing because that maid…she sang to Thorne like a bird. Told him everything that happened and now my name is being dragged." He snarled yet again, slapping Veronica for the third time.
"What?" Veronica choked out, eyes wide. "I thought it was sorted," she said through her teeth, still holding her cheek. "The maid was supposed to stay silent. I told her to—"
"You thought?" Carter bellowed. "You thought?" He took a threatening step forward and kicked her in the stomach.
"Tell me, how exactly did you sort this?" He asked and she looked down in shame.
"I begged her. But father I swear it's not how it sounds. I had to beg her so the king wouldn't find out. It was such a tight situation that I had—"
"You begged her?" Carter snarled so violently, he gripped Veronica's hair tightly, her scalp burned. Then he threw her against the wall that her back hit it harshly . She fell to the ground with a whimper.
"You begged her. A servant girl." Carter snarled, his voice rising to a pitch that made even the chandelier tremble. "A servant girl? You dropped your name—my name—into the mud and groveled at her feet like some common whore?"
"No father. I would never—"
"Shut up!" The man snapped, he squeezed his eyes shut for a second, letting his nerves calm down. He then walked over to the alcohol cabinet and grabbed a bottle of vodka, he poured it for himself and sat down. Then took a gulp.
Veronica knelt down, watching him cautiously. The darn girl. She even begged her. All she had to do was stay silent. Just stay silent and even that she couldn't do.
"F-father… Did the king call you over? Is he going to expose us?" She asked.
"Well, what do you think? If you hadn't lied to me then I would've been prepared for the ridicule I was going there to face. I played right into that bastard's hands." He gritted out, fists clenched tight as he remembered the look in Thorne's eyes.
Oh, how he hated that son of a bitch.
"Radek?" He asked.
"He went into town…but I called him back already. He would be here soon, father." Veronica rushed out.
"F-father…I know I'm out of my head to suggest this but how about we do away with the maid. If she's gone, then there's no testimony, right?" Veronica asked slowly, her voice trembling.
Carter's hand froze on the rim of the goblet. For a moment, the only sound was the shaky breathing of hers
He turned his head, not looking at her just yet. "You're suggesting we kill the maid who accused your mate of assaulting her?"
"Father, I—"
"Have you lost your mind!" He growled, throwing the goblet at her.
"Gods! How did I ever think you were much smarter than your sister? You're a fool! Your mother's womb could only bring forth such pathetic little creatures like you and Freya!" He snarled.
"And what happens when the maid disappears? The king miraculously stops pointing fingers at us? He doesn't think we did it to avoid the scrutinisation from the council?"
Veronica gapes. "No fatger, I didn't think—"
"And that's the problem. You never think. None of you do. Your sister has the golden opportunity right now but even her couldn't take a hold of it. Useless, the lots of you."
The door opened and Radek stepped in cautiously, his eyes widening slightly when they land on Veronica kneeling and Carter fuming.
"M-my Lord—" He rushed out but before he couldn't finish the rest of his words, the bottle of vodka is thrown at him.
"You absolute idiot." Carter spat.
"I took you in, fed you and made you into an alpha. Into this body you have and yet..all you can do to repay me is to drag my name through the mud? To humiliate me with the king?"
Radek froze, the bottle shattering against the wall behind him. He didn't dare move.
"My Lord—please," Radek tried again, voice tight. "I didn't do anything. I didn't—"
"You're always doing something! You couldn't even keep your dick in your pants at a festival. A festival that I sponsored. That we used to cement our influence with the royal court!" Carter bellowed
"My name will not be dragged against the mud nor will I be ridiculed. I am a man of honor and I will rather die before my name is tabled amongst the council members like a criminal.."
"The king wants an apology and that's what he'll get." He said then stood up, gaze stuck in the man cowering before him. "You'll grovel at the girls knees if need be but you will face the brunt for this."
"Father!" Veronica says from where she is, quickly getting up. "What are you saying father? Radek can't knell before a servant girl. He might not be anything but me? I'm your daughter! I can't have my mate kneeling before a slave."
"Then you should've thought of that before lying to me." Carter snapped.
"M-my Lord. I urge you to—"
"Enough!" Carter said, face red with anger. "You will do as the king has said. You will kneel before the servant girl." He paused, he sing heavily. "You're no different from her so what does it matter."
Radek looked down, jaw clenched hard. "Yes, my lord."
Carters gaze shifted to Veronica who looked like she had more to say. "Your sister, Freya. Call her back! She's of no use there."
Veronica's eyes widen. "But father….dhe says she's close to it. She has a lock on the king now and just need—"
"What she needs is to return. It's better injured than dead. Call her back. There are other ways to fulfil her dreams. This is just one of it." He said…walking towards the door only to stop beside Radek.
The man looked down, not wanting to meet his eyes. Carter hummed. "Tomorrow you'll be summoned to the palace. I expect a remorseful and sincere apology. Go on your knees if need be." He says.
"Yes my lord."
Carter turned to Veronica. "The vial?" He asked and she blinked, she'd forgotten already.
She dipped her hands into her pockets and quickly took out the vial. "Here father. This is his sperm."
Carter stared at the bottle in his hands and nodded. "Good. At least you got this one right. It doesn't matter what happens tomorrow with the king. This alone will be his downfall." He smirked sinisterly.
"Obsidian needs a new king."
