Chapter 22: CHAPTER 22:Crazy
The chaos in the Inuzuri District was far beyond Moyu's expectations.
Even with memories from a previous life, he couldn't understand why this area had descended into such madness.
Just scratching the surface revealed chaos that was visible to the naked eye.
Robbery without restraint, bullying, brawls in the streets…
Some wandering souls even watched the incoming Shinigami trainees with hungry, malicious eyes.
Judging from their expressions, Moyu suspected that if the student group had been any smaller, they would have been outright attacked.
And the environment wasn't any better.
Filthy streets littered with discarded junk, pools of foul water, and chunks of flesh from unknown creatures.
As the team ventured deeper, signs of strain appeared among them.
Hinamori Momo, who grew up in the western Junrinan District of Rukongai, had gone pale.
Moyu, however, showed no discomfort—his understanding of how harsh Inuzuri could be kept him composed.
"How far are we from where the rogue souls are hiding?" Abarai Renji asked, his tone edged with irritation.
It was clear that returning to his old neighborhood brought back unwanted memories.
"I think it's more appropriate for you to lead the way," Moyu said, handing him the map. "You're the boss, after all."
"Well, Brother Moyu…" Rukia started, but Moyu raised a hand and stopped her.
"Just leave it to Renji."
She paused, a flicker of emotion in her eyes. Even without words, she knew—Moyu was looking out for her.
Since arriving in Inuzuri, Rukia had been haunted by painful memories from the past, despite trying to hide them.
That was why Moyu didn't want her to take point.
Renji moved ahead, checking the map and confirming their destination.
"Even though it's been a long time since I left Inuzuri," Renji said with his crimson hair swaying, "I still remember the layout."
"Their location is only an hour away from here. But don't let your guard down."
"Judging by how mad those guys are, they're clearly not afraid to attack first."
Hearing this, everyone exchanged glances—and fear surfaced in their eyes.
Mad rogue souls. A lawless wasteland.
Compared to Seireitei, this felt like hell.
———
Half an hour later.
As they advanced, the surroundings grew quieter. The streets were eerily empty.
A heavy, sweltering air pressed down on them. Beads of sweat rolled down their foreheads.
Even a fool could tell—something was wrong.
Silence reigned.
Everyone remained alert.
Boom—
A dull thud echoed from the end of the street.
It came from the outskirts of Inuzuri.
The next moment, the air split with a piercing sound.
A sharp arrow tore across the sky—headed straight toward them!
"Be careful!"
Abarai Renji reacted instantly.
Clang!
He drew his Zanpakutō in one swift motion and slashed the incoming arrow midair.
The others dodged or deflected the strike with equal speed.
"What kind of lunatic..." Kira Izuru muttered, tongue clicking, "They just attacked Seireitei personnel like it's nothing! Do they even understand what that means?"
"What does it mean?" Moyu replied coldly. "Wandering souls don't care about the difference between Seireitei and Rukongai."
"They're beasts consumed by madness. They've even lost their instincts."
As he spoke, countless red lights began to flicker in the darkness between abandoned buildings.
Drawing closer, the red light revealed itself—dozens of bloodshot eyes.
The stench of blood, the twisted madness in their gaze.
Gone was any trace of reason.
Only savagery remained.
"Shinigami…?"
A raspy voice rang out, as if it hadn't tasted water in days.
"Haha… kill them!!"
A shriek tore through the silence. The rogue souls charged like beasts.
Dozens of skeletal bodies burst from the darkness with animalistic speed.
They howled, foamed at the mouth, saliva spraying through the air.
Had they looked different, one might have mistaken them for Hollows.
"Engage!"
Renji didn't hesitate. He charged forward, Zanpakutō gleaming.
The rest of the group followed without pause.
They had all experienced the soul burial practice.
Their courage had been tempered in fire.
This was no time for fear or hesitation.
These were top students from the special class.
They knew how to fight—and they fought well.
Renji's blade flashed. Blood splattered across the ground as rogue souls fell.
Thunderous white Kidō surged from behind.
Lightning coiled, then blasted forward—instantly incinerating bony bodies.
One after another, their enemies fell.
The madness in the eyes of the wandering souls began to give way… to fear.
