Bleach: Starting From Joining Squad 6

Chapter 18: Chapter 18: Gate of Babylon

There was once a legendary office drone who said something that Nagasawa Masaru had always treated as gospel.

"Work is bullshit."

After being pinned to his seat by Byakuya Kuchiki and forced to work from noon until evening, Masaru silently swore he'd find a way to escape this hellish predicament.

Work? Not a chance. Not in this lifetime.

Yet just as he was lazily propping up his chin, mindlessly spinning the brush in his fingers, flinging drops of ink all over the place under Byakuya's murderous glare, Masaru suddenly froze mid-motion. His mind blanked for a second, and he didn't even realize the brush had slipped from his hand and flown straight into Byakuya's ink bowl.

Plop!

The brush landed with a splash, flinging a fountain of ink into the air. Not only did it splatter across Byakuya's face as he was diligently reviewing documents, it drenched every single page he had already finished.

"NAGASAWA!! MASARU!!"

A vein pulsed on Byakuya's pristine forehead. He was so furious he nearly ground his molars into dust.

"Sorry, Byakuya. Something urgent just came up. I'll come back and apologize later."

Before Byakuya could even draw the Zanpakutō at his waist and demonstrate to Masaru just how red flowers could bloom, Masaru snapped out of his daze, casually tossed out the line, and vanished from Squad 6 without looking back.

Byakuya was left standing alone in the now-empty office, face twisted with barely contained rage.

...

Having fled the Squad 6 barracks, Masaru didn't go far. He just found a quiet, empty corner and opened up his system.

Just moments ago, while repeatedly refreshing the system interface out of sheer boredom, something unexpected had happened.

Perhaps the system had finally grown irritated by his antics and decided to throw two new panels at him.

↓[Missions]

↓[Fate Shop]

Just like those freemium mobile games back in the real world, both the [Missions] and [Shop] panels had their own refresh timers.

The refresh cycle for both was one month.

Naturally, the currency for the Fate Shop was Fate Points.

Masaru opened the shop tab and was greeted by a pitiful sight—just six items sitting alone on the shelf, along with a countdown timer: 29 days, 23 hours, 58 minutes, and 20 seconds.

[Floral Arrangement Mastery]

[Abandon Incantation: Hado #1–#30]

[Shunko: Suzushiro Template]

[Three-Day Injury Immunity Card]

[Ryujin Jakka Permanent Access (Stackable)]

[Gate of Babylon]

There were only six items, but aside from the [Three-Day Injury Immunity Card] which cost 30 Fate Points, every other item was ludicrously out of his price range.

With just 1 Fate Point to his name, Masaru felt the sting of poverty and silently wept inside.

"Wait a sec... one of these looks kinda off."

Just as he was about to switch over to the [Missions] tab and see if he could earn more points, a certain phrase caught his eye—one that felt oddly familiar yet hilariously out of place.

[Gate of Babylon]?

If he remembered correctly, wasn't that the signature move of the lamp-post-loving King of Heroes from Fate?

"Wait... does that mean this system sells powers from outside of Bleach too?"

Masaru's face twisted into an expression of deep suspicion.

But the doubt didn't last long. He quickly tossed it aside.

Who cares? He couldn't afford any of it anyway.

As for the [Missions] tab, it was a bit more complicated.

There were only three missions available, and he could only accept one at a time. Once accepted, there was no time limit for completion, but if he wanted to switch, it would cost him a one-month cooldown.

The other two missions would remain visible until the current one was completed or swapped out. Only then would new missions appear.

[Mission 1: Alter Gin Ichimaru's fate. Make him abandon his revenge plan and undercover role beside Sōsuke Aizen to prevent his eventual death.]

Well, damn.

Masaru stared blankly at the screen.

Gin Ichimaru. The guy who graduated from the Shin'ō Academy in just one year, the same as Byakuya Kuchiki. Future Captain of Squad 3. A certified genius.

Honestly, Masaru figured the mission could be either incredibly hard or deceptively simple.

Gin had gone undercover beside Aizen to take back something stolen from his childhood friend, Rangiku Matsumoto, and bide his time for revenge.

Masaru couldn't say for sure whether Gin's motives came from friendship or love.

But let's be real—any goal that could drive a man for over a hundred years wasn't going to be shaken by a few motivational speeches.

Unless he had Naruto's Talk no Jutsu.

Still, if you thought outside the box, there were other angles.

What if he went after Rangiku himself?

If he could make Gin lose hope in her... maybe that would be enough to derail his revenge?

But honestly, Masaru didn't think this mission suited him. The odds of success were low, and he didn't want to waste a whole month waiting out the cooldown.

[Mission 2: Change the fate of the Visoreds. Prevent their Hollowfication and their exile from Soul Society.]

Hmm...

Masaru figured this one was also extremely difficult.

Right now, Gin had only just graduated and hadn't even caught Aizen's attention. That meant there was still time before Aizen would begin experimenting on captain-level Shinigami to research Arrancars.

Let's not forget—Masaru's peak Shinigami experience card had already expired. Unless he could quickly farm enough Fate Points to buy [Permanent Ryujin Jakka Access (Stackable)], he wasn't even qualified to go up against Aizen directly.

[Mission 3: Save Sōjun Kuchiki. Change his fate and ensure he successfully inherits the Kuchiki family's leadership.]

Masaru fell silent.

Compared to the other two—which both involved getting tangled up with Aizen—this mission seemed way easier. But it also left him feeling lost.

In all of Bleach, Sōjun Kuchiki—Byakuya's father—barely made an appearance. He showed up less than even Byakuya's grandfather, Ginrei Kuchiki.

Because of that, Masaru lost the advantage of foreknowledge. He didn't even know how Sōjun had died.

But in the end, he still chose this mission.

Not because he wanted to avoid crossing paths with Aizen too early.

But because Byakuya had been willing to speak up for him after knowing him for only a single day.

Masaru just wanted to return the favor, simple as that.
