BLEACH: Blade of Purification

Chapter 45: Chapter 45: The Invisible and the Visible

Clang, clang-clang—

The quiet night was broken by the dry clash of metal.

However, besides the sound of clashing metal, the wind also carried the shriek of high-speed assaults tearing through the air, followed by the sound of something being pierced or blown apart.

This was not a battlefield, but a farmer's field in autumn. Yet here, a battle was quietly unfolding. It was not a battle between the monstrous Hollows and the Shinigami who guard the safety of humans in the dark, secretly slaying the enemies that invade the human world.

This was a battle between the invisible and the visible.

It was a battle between Shinigami and humans.

Or perhaps, it would be more accurate to call them Quincy.

They wore white robes and cloaks that were incredibly conspicuous in the dark of night. They gathered spirit particles to form bows, compressing them into arrows and firing them as weapons. The arrows, made from compressed spirit particles, emitted a faint blue light. The light-blue arrows cut through the night sky at high speed, leaving only a fleeting trail of light like a shooting star in the darkness.

But when there were enough of these shooting stars, they fell like rain!

However, the Shinigami fighting them showed no fear in the face of the arrow-rain. On the contrary, they grinned with bloodthirsty smiles, charging head-on into the arrows without dodging or yielding! The Shinigami continuously swung their rust-smelling blades, cutting down the incoming arrows, their feet advancing as if to tread over every inch of the land!

The Quincy were shaken by the Shinigami's fearless-of-death momentum. Under the Shinigami's assault, their numbers dwindled, and they could only retreat again and again.

What they didn't know was that the ones who had appeared here were arguably the most flamboyant and wild squad among the Gotei 13. They were Shinigami, but they were also warriors, blades, and power itself. The emblem of the yarrow plant they wore was enough to declare their identity.

Squad 11! A squad that could silence even a crying child with fear!

The battle between the Quincy and the Shinigami continued in a place unknown to ordinary humans, with the Shinigami gradually gaining an overwhelming advantage, directing the course of the battle. The sounds of slaughter and screams were incessant. People constantly fell, and then they died.

"Captain, are you not going to make a move?"

Far behind the several hundred Shinigami in black robes, a person similarly dressed as a Shinigami asked curiously of the man who stood with his arms crossed, gazing at the battlefield as if he were just a passerby.

This man was a head taller than most others. His eyes were as sharp as a beast's, his hair as messy as wild grass. The character for 'Eleven' on the back of his haori looked more like a slash mark from a sword! This man was no mere passerby. On the contrary, he was the one leading this squad of warriors, the one who brought the butcher's blade down upon the Quincy without mercy.

He was the captain of Squad 11—Kuruyashiki Kenpachi! The man who held the title of the 'Strongest Shinigami.'

"Well, I was quite interested in these Quincy. But after cutting down a few, I found their power to be far weaker than I imagined. No wonder the Head-Captain thought our squad alone would be enough to solve the problem."

Although he looked quite terrifying at a glance, upon hearing Kuruyashiki Kenpachi's words, one would realize that there was not a trace of arrogance in his speech. On the contrary, he was quite modest, polite, and easy-going. He slightly narrowed his eyes, looking at the light-blue arrows that cut through the darkness, looking at the humans fighting his squad members. He said in a tone of感慨 (gǎnkǎi - sighing with emotion), "The Quincy have declined as well."

Kuruyashiki Kenpachi had heard that seven or eight hundred years ago, the Quincy were not as weak as they were today; even with the full force of Soul Society, they had almost been completely wiped out. When he heard that rumor, Kenpachi regretted that he had been born several hundred years too late. And now, although it wasn't apparent on the surface, he was surely feeling that regret in his heart again.

Even though they were both Quincy, the ones before him now, who could be handled by his squad members without him even needing to act, made it difficult for him to imagine the glory of the Quincy from a millennium ago. No matter how modest and polite Kuruyashiki Kenpachi appeared, he was still a man who had inherited the name of Kenpachi. To fight the strong, to raise his sword against the stronger—this was something he dreamed of encountering.

"What's the situation now?"

Pulling his scattered thoughts back, Kuruyashiki Kenpachi focused on the mission at hand. They had no personal grudge against these Quincy. At the end of the day, the difference between Shinigami purifying Hollows and Quincy completely annihilating them was probably not something anyone in Squad 11 cared about. But a mission was a mission. As long as the Head-Captain gave the order, as long as there was a fight here, the members of Squad 11 would eagerly swing their swords without a second thought.

Morality or justice were never things the members of Squad 11 would consider. All they thought about was where they could find a strong enough opponent to fight to the death!

"It's going smoothly. If this continues, we should be able to complete the mission soon."

The Shinigami who answered Kuruyashiki Kenpachi had no hint of relief in his voice. On the contrary, the emotion was regret. For Kuruyashiki Kenpachi, these were opponents he couldn't even be bothered to draw his sword against. For these ordinary squad members, they were evenly matched opponents. Such opponents, and in such large numbers, were hard to come by in Soul Society. Everyone wanted to prolong this joy for as long as possible.

"What about those who fled?"

"They've probably all been killed by the members of Squad 2 lurking nearby. Heh."

When mentioning another squad within the Gotei 13, his tone unconsciously took on a bit of contempt and disdain. Indeed, when speaking of the Punishment Force, even the madmen of Squad 11 had to take them seriously, but that didn't mean they looked up to them. Compared to the madmen of Squad 11 who fought head-on on the battlefield, the Onmitsukidō, who carried out assassination work in the shadows, had never been respected by Squad 11. Their level of contempt was second only to those sissies in Squad 4 who had no fighting ability at all.

And what they despised most about the Onmitsukidō was probably their methods. The old, the weak, the sick, and the disabled—groups with little combat power—were opponents the members of Squad 11 had always disdained to raise their swords against. The 'fleeing' ones Kenpachi mentioned were mostly of this type. In fact, strictly speaking, those people hadn't fled; they had been 'let go' by the members of Squad 11. It seemed that it was precisely because of this characteristic of Squad 11 that Squad 2 had been sent to assist.

Those old, weak, sick, and disabled Quincy who thought they had luckily escaped probably didn't even have time to celebrate their good fortune before they were killed by those who hid in the darkness, not even daring to show their faces! Even against a child powerless to swing a sword, those Shinigami of the Onmitsukidō would strike without a moment's hesitation! They had not a shred of a warrior's dignity or principles.

However, as he said this, the speaker seemed to think of something and looked towards a certain direction on the battlefield. "But... speaking of which. Among the Squad 2 members who rotated in this time, there seems to be a special guy."
