Chapter 14: Chapter 13: The Weight of His Choice
Asta stepped out of the trial grounds, his boots pressing against the stone path as he emerged into the soft glow of the Seireitei's morning light. The warmth of the sun brushed against his skin, a stark contrast to the cold, suffocating darkness he had just left behind.
His body felt heavier than before—not from exhaustion, but from the lingering weight of his decision. The air outside was fresh and open, yet his chest felt tight, as if the trial had wrapped invisible chains around him.
Kaien was the first to greet him, standing near the entrance with his arms crossed. The usual playfulness in his eyes was gone, replaced with quiet understanding. "You're back," he said, scanning Asta's expression. "Took you longer than I expected."
Asta's usual grin was nowhere to be found. He glanced back at the entrance, the dark passageway now silent. "Yeah…" His voice lacked its usual energy.
Kaien studied him for a moment before sighing. "It was tough, wasn't it?"
Asta clenched his fists. "It wasn't a fight," he muttered. "It wasn't about pushing through or getting stronger." His brows furrowed. "I had to choose, Kaien. And no matter what I did, I…" He gritted his teeth, the memory burning in his mind.
Kaien's expression softened. "You left someone behind."
Asta's eyes widened slightly, but he didn't deny it. His shoulders slumped. "Yeah."
Kaien exhaled through his nose. "That's the kind of trial this was. It wasn't about winning. It was about understanding what it means to make a choice when no right answer exists." He turned his gaze toward the sky. "The life of a Soul Reaper… or really, just life in general, is full of choices like that. You don't always get to save everyone, Asta."
Asta's fists trembled. "But that's not fair," he whispered.
Kaien turned to him, his voice steady. "It's not."
Silence stretched between them.
For the first time in a long while, Asta felt… uncertain. His entire life had been built around the idea that as long as he worked hard enough, pushed forward with all his might, he could make the impossible possible.
But this time… his strength hadn't been enough.
Kaien placed a hand on his shoulder. "What matters isn't whether the choice was fair or not," he said. "What matters is what you do next."
Asta looked at him, eyes searching for an answer he didn't yet have.
Kaien gave him a small smile. "Come on. Daichi's waiting for you."
Asta took a deep breath, pushing aside the storm in his mind for now. No matter how heavy this weight was, he wouldn't let it stop him. He had passed the trial—somehow—and there was still more ahead.
With renewed resolve, he nodded. "Alright. Let's go."
Together, they walked away from the trial grounds, the sunlight shining down on them. But even as Asta stepped forward, he knew one thing for certain…
He would never forget the choice he made that day.
