Chapter 11: Chapter 10: The Burden of Choice Part 1
Asta and Kaien walked side by side through the quiet stone pathways of the Seireitei, the air still cool from the early morning breeze. The golden glow of the rising sun stretched long shadows across the ground as they neared the location of Asta's second trial.
Unlike before, Kaien wasn't his usual relaxed self. His arms were crossed, his expression thoughtful.
Asta, on the other hand, was brimming with energy, throwing punches into the air as he walked. "Alright! What's today's trial? Another test of strength? More pressure training? Maybe some insane speed challenge?"
Kaien sighed. "Not this time."
Asta blinked and lowered his fists. "Huh?"
Kaien glanced at him. "This trial is different. It's not about how strong you are, how fast you are, or how much willpower you have." His tone was serious. "This time, it's about whether you can make the right choice when it matters."
Asta tilted his head. "That doesn't sound that bad."
Kaien stopped walking, making Asta pause as well. His expression was unreadable.
"Asta, this time… you'll be completely alone."
Asta frowned. "Wait, what do you mean? You're not coming?"
Kaien shook his head. "No one is. This trial is designed so that only you can face it. No advice, no backup, no second opinions. Just you, your mind, and the consequences of your decisions."
Asta blinked. "…Huh."
For the first time, the weight of the trial actually hit him. Every challenge he had faced before—whether it was in the Clover Kingdom or here in the Soul Society—he had always had someone by his side. Even when things got tough, he could rely on his friends.
But now?
This was different.
Before Asta could respond, a familiar figure appeared in front of them—Daichi, standing just outside a stone archway leading to an enclosed temple. His gaze was sharp, as if studying Asta's reaction.
"You're here," Daichi stated. "Good. The second trial is ready."
Asta took a deep breath and stepped forward. He had come too far to hesitate now.
No matter what choices he had to make…
He wouldn't back down.
To be continued…
