Chapter 365: Press Conference
"What will it be?"
With the crowd agreeing on three months, those left to decide were the some of the neutrals, and the Mertens and Ross families. The pro-Noah camp would naturally go with whatever decision Noah made.
Of the two large families, Noah's attention was more on the Mertens. Not only was this because the Mertens was the leader of their alliance, but because Noah wanted to know the choice of his godfather.
The Mertens representatives didn't know what to say. The original plan from the family head was to divide them into two; three of the representatives would remain neutral while the other two would side with the pro-Noah camp. Unlike the other family representatives, the Mertens didn't have an obvious central figure —a move planned by Russell from the start. As such, the split would successfully confuse others of their plan, and Noah was no different.
Cole, a man with a blue-white hair, couldn't help but frown after Noah's inquiry.
In order to have their representatives properly coordinated, the top four families would usually have one of them lead the group. This was the same for the Mertens as well. However, unlike the other families, the Mertens constantly revolved this central figure which led to the confusion.
For this matter, Russell had appointed Cole to lead the family's representatives and make decisions that required immediate actions. However, while this was one such spontaneous moments, not even Cole was confident enough to decide where the family should stand.
Would he go with the majority and agree to Noah's demands for him to step down and re-contest after three months, or would he refuse that and force for the vote to still go through? If it were the latter, the question of where their support laid would still be raised as well.
Just when Cole was confused as to which decision to make, a voice sounded in his head. After a brief moment of confusion, his eyes regained clarity.
"We have no comments on the decision."
However, even as Cole gave a reply, Noah's attention wasn't on him. Instead, Noah was facing the entrance of the Assembly of the People. His eyes seemed to stare past the shut doors as Noah frowned.
Meanwhile, at the White Mountain House, Russell seemed to sense something as he turned towards the direction of the building, the Assembly of the People.
Despite the distance between the two, both Russell and Noah seemed to sense each other's gaze. Noah had a slight frown on his face with a complex expression, while Russell was calm.
After a short while, Noah broke contact and faced the crowd once again.
"This matter needs here."
Noah departed right away.
After Noah turned away, Russell sighed and stood up from his seat.
"Where are you off to?" Liam asked with a curious look on his face.
They were all at the same level, so they noticed what had occurred. Although Liam had an idea, he wanted to confirm it.
However, Russell's response didn't help him much with his suspicions.
"Home. The meeting is over."
. . .
The members of the press that were gathered outside were soon informed of the conclusion of the meeting.
They had been speculations about how the meeting would end especially since some of them had spotted Noah arriving. The city lord didn't make any attempt to hide his presence, and this sent the press into a frenzy as many guessed that he wanted to force an end to the voting. Although this would have made him look like a dictator, for the press that were hungry for a story, this was an ending they hoped would come true.
After Noah left the main hall of the Assembly of the People and walked out of the building, the was surrounded by news agencies and journalists who wanted to get some information out of him.
"City lord, what are your thoughts in the actions of the Cabinet?"
"Your actions right now are in contrast to the unwritten law. Are you planning to disregard the law for your own interests, city lord?"
"City lord, I'm from the Daily Post. Please can you let us know how you feel at this moment?"
"Please city lord, seeing as you're here, us the news about your injury really true or just a ploy to impeach you?"
"There are claims that you're attempting a coup on the cabinet, what do you have to say, city lord?"
"City lord..."
The rowdy members of the press didn't seem to care about their appearances as they all rushed forward with their microphones pointed in the direction of Noah. Some of them asked ridiculous questions while others presented questions that seemed simple but had an underlying meaning. No matter which it was, as long as Noah answered any of them, the media would be able to produce eye-catching headlines that would affect the public's opinion of Noah.
In this moment, no one seemed to care about Noah's identity as the city lord. All they wanted was a story to publish.
One reason for this was that all the media houses and need agencies present were backed by a powerful force. So as long as they didn't go overboard, there was nothing to be afraid of.
The other reason was because they were the media. Noah's public rating was currently at an all-time low and he would need to cooperate with the media if he wanted to fix that. Hence, this gave them the courage to be more aggressive with their questions.
"You will find your answers during the press conference." Noah replied before making his way out of the scene.
The guards from the City Lord Manor escorted him out while blocking the journalists.
Some reporters were unwilling to give up and threw questions at the top of their voices at Noah, but he ignored them.
A few seconds after Noah left, an employee of the Assembly of the People arrived outside and stared at the crowd.
"Kindly proceed to Hall B for the press conference."
Due to the nature of today's cabinet session, there was going to be a press conference right after. During the conference, the results of both the meeting and the voting would be announced. The cabinet premier would also answer some questions from the press.
Without a second to waste, the reporters and journalists all dashed into the building and rushed for the hall. Even though the seating positions had already been assigned, they were no longer in the mood to take things slow as they all wanted to know what had happened.
. . .
*Crash*
*Bam*
Inside a 33 storey skyscraper in Neon Summer Province in the Bernin continent, a figure rampaged around and smashed the furniture within the room. Apart from the table at the other end of the room with the chair behind it, all the other furniture in the room were in tatters. Whether it was the coffee table, the sofa, or the shelf that previously held a collection of books, they had all been smashed into splinters.
"Those bastards!" The young man gritted his teeth in fury.
The young man looked like a hyuman but had grey coloured skin, reminiscent of high quality marble, which was rarely seen in a pure-blooded hyuman. He had silver hair that shimmered with an almost ethereal glow. Although such a hair colour was a hyuman feature, it wasn't very common. The young man had tied his hair into three braids that extended all the way to his waist like vines.
As if to complement his skin colour, he wore a grey trench coat that draped over his shoulders with a white shirt and matching trousers. At a single glance, the quality of his outfits was impeccable, and one could even sense a vague sensation of stellar energy flowing through the weaved patterns.
Whether it was his clothing, hair or skin colour, they were both outstanding qualities that could garner attention. With all these qualities in one body, it was unavoidable that the young man became a sight for sore eyes.
However, despite having an appearance that would even make the Greek gods wallow in envy, the young man was currently throwing a fit.
"They had one job, one fucking job!" The silver haired man roared.
Luckily, the room was soundproof, otherwise with how loud he reacted, a lot of unnecessary attention would have been drawn over.
"Calm down, Kano."
A presence that was seated behind the table said. The presence was facing the floor-to-ceiling window and backing the silver haired man, making their identity unknown. Despite this, the young man wasn't surprised as he knew who was talking.
"Calm down? Are you forgetting how much we spent in that operation? They had only one job! To put that bastard city lord into a coma. And now you're telling me he woke up within just a few weeks?" The silver-haired young man, Kano, barked in response.
"But the end goal is still achieved, no? Noah is no longer the city lord."
Kano hesitated after the words from the presence behind the table.
Yes. Even though Noah woke up from coma, resulting in their goal not entirely complete, the operation was still somewhat successful. He was no longer the city lord.
"His existence is still a treat though." Kano frowned, unwilling to settle down just like that.
"True that. The original plan was to send him into coma and free the city lord position for that fellow. While the city lord position is indeed open as we wanted, Noah is still a difficult opponent for that fellow to beat." The presence didn't deny Kano's words.
"Then-"
"But that doesn't mean much. It is much easier to avoid a stain than to get rid of it. Having stepped down already, the public opinion of Noah isn't the best. We can still move according to plan. If he seems likely to make a comeback, then we just ambush him again."
Kano felt a chill at the man's words. Although the previous attack on the city lord of Baylands city-state was indeed orchestrated by them, that was thanks to months of planning and a well-timed opportunity. Otherwise, forget about pulling off an ambush, the attackers might have died and failed in their task.
However, the man just suggested that they could carry out another ambush if the need be.
Since such a wonderful opportunity as the last time wouldn't be possible, the only way for another ambush to be successful would be at the cost of a lot of sacrifices. He might be on the dark side, but not even Kano could be so merciless with his men.
"Proceed with the plan. 3 and a half months. We don't have much time."
