Billionaire in Kingsman with a Marvel System

Chapter 256: Chapter 256: Even the Most Reliable Allies Can Have Second Thoughts

"Why don't we get down to business first? We didn't bring the hunting dogs today, and it won't be easy to find prey in such a large forest."

"No worries, look over there," William pointed about twenty meters ahead to the side of Garrick. "See that? Under that oak tree, there's a rabbit. I'll let you have the first shot."

The more indifferent William appeared, the more convinced Garrick was that he'd fallen into a trap. But since the bet was already in place, Garrick had no choice but to look in the direction William had indicated.

After staring for more than ten seconds, Garrick finally spotted the rabbit hiding in the pile of leaves under the oak tree. He looked at William in astonishment. "How did you even spot that? It's so well hidden! Are you wearing some kind of high-tech contact lenses?"

"Did you get your head stuck in a door? If I had that kind of equipment, I'd already be the richest man in the world. Are you going to take the shot or not? If you wait any longer, that rabbit's going to bolt."

Just as he finished speaking, William muttered "F, K" under his breath, quickly taking a few steps away from Garrick. In Garrick's surprised gaze, William raised his hunting rifle and fired at the rabbit.

With a loud bang, Garrick saw the rabbit leap into the air, only to be blasted several meters by the shotgun's pellets, landing lifeless in the grass. William walked over to the grass and found the rabbit without a head. "Damn, how did you hit its head while it was jumping?"

William shrugged. "Is it that hard? Just lift the gun and pull the trigger at the target."

"F, K, YOU," Garrick exclaimed angrily. "Of course I know to aim at the target, but the key is how to actually hit it."

"Well..." William's face showed a look of difficulty. "Sorry, I don't really know how to explain it. For me, shooting is just a matter of aiming and firing. It's been that way since I first picked up a gun—I haven't missed a shot."

"What did you just say? Cough, cough, cough," Garrick choked on William's words, coughing violently before finally recovering. "Did you just say you've never missed a shot?"

"That's right," William nodded. He had never missed a shot, but that was thanks to the system and his mental scanning abilities. Within 200 meters, William really could hit anything he aimed at. But he couldn't reveal that, so he had to lie and say it was just natural talent.

However, Garrick believed him completely, his eyes flickering as he said, "I finally understand why you enjoy taking people out so much. Besides leaving no loose ends, pulling the trigger must be a lot of fun and give you a sense of accomplishment. Do you feel excited and fulfilled every time you take someone out?"

William thought about it, then shook his head. "No, but I never feel guilty about taking out people who deserve it."

Garrick recalled the files in his safe and realized that William had indeed never taken out an innocent person. He secretly admired William's caution; he always demanded official authorization for his actions, leaving no room for Garrick to catch him. At the same time, he adhered strictly to his moral code, never targeting the innocent.

"Haha, if someone who doesn't understand you tried to take you down, they'd need at least a squad of special forces. Anything less would just be feeding you."

"Mm," William turned his head to glance at the smiling Garrick. What did this bastard mean by that? Was it just a casual thought, or had he actually considered how to deal with him?

If an ordinary person had said this, William wouldn't have thought much of it. But since it came from Garrick, the head of special operations, William had to take it seriously. He immediately decided to test Garrick.

The sudden silence made Garrick glance at William, but what he saw startled him. William was staring at him with an uncertain expression.

Garrick wished he could slap himself. He quickly explained, "Sorry, William, it's just a professional habit. You know, people like me are used to calculating the feasibility and success rates of different scenarios. I swear to God and my family name, William, I've never thought about making a move against you. We don't have any conflicting interests—this is just a misunderstanding."

While listening to Garrick's explanation, William's mental focus was on sensing Garrick's heartbeat. Before Garrick realized he'd slipped up, his heartbeat had been normal, which meant he had no hidden glee or disappointment when talking about taking out William. But when he started explaining, Garrick's heart rate suddenly sped up, indicating he was both nervous and frightened, which was normal.

If Garrick's heartbeat had remained steady or only slightly accelerated while explaining, William would have been seriously suspicious. After all, he wouldn't spare anyone who had designs on his life.

"Alright, alright, no need to explain, buddy. Like you said, we don't have any conflicting interests. In fact, we share many common interests. Don't worry, I'm not that petty." William stepped forward and patted Garrick on the shoulder, causing Garrick's shoulder to sink under William's hand.

Garrick was genuinely terrified by William's gaze. Remembering William's previous methods, Garrick realized there was a real possibility he could end up buried in this forest.

"Alright, buddy, let's keep going. We've only bagged one rabbit, not even enough for a snack." With that, William led the way forward, carrying the rabbit.

Garrick stared at William's back, his mind full of regret. His eyes flickered a few times before he finally relaxed and followed William into the forest.

As William walked ahead, he kept his mental focus on Garrick, feeling a sense of relief. He was about 80% sure that Garrick hadn't meant any harm with his earlier words. However, the fact that the thought had crossed Garrick's mind in the first place was troubling.

It was because this thought had existed in Garrick's subconscious that it had slipped out unintentionally. This realization left William frustrated, knowing that even the most reliable allies might sometimes consider how to take you out.

William couldn't stop Garrick from thinking whatever he wanted, but he wouldn't give him the chance to act on it. A knife in the back was more dangerous than a gun in the front, and William, who was used to striking first, took advantage of Garrick being seven or eight meters behind to pull out his Bluetooth earpiece and say, "From today on, monitor Garrick around the clock. Report to me immediately if he does anything that could harm me. Don't worry about anything else, and don't act on your own."

"Understood, sir. Task accepted," came the voice of Sunday. William then put the Bluetooth earpiece back in his pocket. The world was so dangerous that William could only take precautions.

Thankfully, William was clear-headed enough to grant Sunday a limited degree of autonomy without giving it the power to act independently. Otherwise, who knows what it might do?

It's not a joke but a real possibility that if Garrick ever cursed William with a "drop dead," Sunday might interpret that as a threat and take it upon itself to eliminate Garrick.

After making the arrangements, William turned to the regretful Garrick and said, "Hurry up, buddy. It's already after 3 p.m. In two hours, it'll start getting dark in the forest. We don't have much time left, so don't try to weasel out."

"Haha, no worries. I won't back out. I'm just afraid that if you lose, you won't have the guts to go to the Big Goblet Tavern. If the host isn't there, we guests will miss out on a lot of fun."

The two of them joked as if nothing had happened, chatting as they walked. Garrick, who needed William's help, was eager to clear up any misunderstandings, leaving him no time to focus on hunting. Meanwhile, William had no interest in small prey.

After walking for about ten minutes, William was startled by what his mental scan revealed. He grabbed Garrick and said, "Be careful, there are some big ones up ahead."
