Chapter 213: Chapter 213: Death for Family and Money
"I don't understand, Mr. Devonshire. I'm just a fisherman; I don't know how to act. And who would you have me act for?" Solomon asked, looking troubled.
"No, Solomon, you're quite good at acting," William replied, standing beside Solomon and smiling at his conflicted expression. "You don't need to act; just be yourself. Your honest and naive look can fool anyone who doesn't know you."
Realizing that William had seen through his facade, Solomon sheepishly fidgeted with his fingers, "I'm sorry, Mr. Devonshire. Too many people want to take my diamond. I've had to be cautious; my experiences have taught me a lot."
Seeing Solomon's expression, William was pleased, "Haha, that's right, Solomon, exactly right. Who would think that someone as big and naive-looking as you could be so meticulous and cunning? Maybe after settling in Europe, you could find a job as an actor."
William's words made Solomon dream of a peaceful life in another country with his family, away from conflict. A pure smile of longing appeared on his face.
William patted the smiling Solomon and walked over to his desk to start a video call with Sam in New York. After connecting, William said to Solomon, who was still beaming, "Solomon, tell me your family's names and any other details you can remember. The more information, the better it will help me find them."
Solomon, grateful and excited, quickly rattled off the names and details of his wife and three children.
Half an hour later, Sam reported back, "Boss, the good news is that I found Jessie Fandey and her two daughters, Ada and Casey Fandey, at a refugee camp in Tassing, Guinea. They're generally safe. The bad news is that I couldn't find the 11-year-old boy, Dia Fandey. Sorry, Boss, I'll keep looking and try to contact Jessie Fandey directly to see if she can provide any clues. I'll update you as soon as I have more information."
"Okay, send me a video of Jessie and her daughters, but don't mention anything about Solomon to them yet. Also, arrange for their protection discreetly; the expenses can be billed to Brian."
"Understood, the video should be on your computer in about half an hour. Goodbye, Boss."
Ending the call, William looked at Solomon, who was being restrained on the floor by Barney and Christmas, shouting and struggling. William shook his head.
Upon hearing that his family had been found, Solomon had been overjoyed, but learning that his son was missing and that he couldn't see his wife and daughters immediately made him cry out in desperation and rush towards the desk. However, he was stopped by Christmas, and after ignoring a warning, was subdued. Surprisingly, Solomon's strength was formidable, and Christmas struggled to hold him down, prompting Barney to assist.
Ignoring Solomon's outbursts, William went to the bar, poured himself a whiskey, and sat on the couch, sipping his drink and waiting. After about ten minutes, Solomon, exhausted, finally quieted down. William then said, "That's enough, Barney, Christmas, let him go."
Breathing a sigh of relief, Barney and Christmas released Solomon and stood up, surprised by Solomon's strength and endurance. They both felt a newfound respect for the seemingly simple man and wondered if he could be trained as a heavy weapons specialist.
"Have you calmed down?" William asked, looking at Solomon, who was still panting on the floor. When Solomon nodded, William continued, "Sit down. I won't do anything to your wife and daughters. At the Tassing refugee camp, there's no need for me to intervene. Anything can happen there. Not telling Jessie about your situation will be beneficial for the future. When you do meet, her and your daughters' reactions will be genuine, making it less likely for anyone to suspect anything. Right now, your concern should be for your son, Dia Fandey."
Upon hearing about his son, Solomon stood up quickly, "Dia must have been taken by the rebels. Mr. Devonshire, help me. I promise I'll do anything for you, just help me find Dia."
"Haha," William chuckled, seeing the cunning flash in Solomon's eyes. This guy was a natural actor, William thought. He decided to lay down the law, "Solomon, I will help you find your son, but if you deceive me or ruin my plans, I will withdraw the protection for your wife and daughters, leaving them in the Tassing refugee camp. Imagine what could happen to them there without protection. It's the second-largest refugee camp in the world; think of the risks. And you and your son? I will throw you into the darkest, most dangerous diamond mines in southern Sierra Leone. Once you're there, you won't see the light of day again. When food runs out, anything can happen."
Imagining the dire consequences William described, Solomon shivered, knowing well the horrors of the mining camps, having heard terrifying stories and been imprisoned in one before. Understanding the potential fate of his wife and daughters, he began trembling uncontrollably, stammering, "You can rest assured, I swear on my surname, I will complete your task, even if it means dying."
Staring at Solomon for several seconds, William finally saw the determination and resolve he had hoped for in Solomon's eyes. Coupled with the steady rhythm of Solomon's heartbeat, William said, "Very well. Once the task is done, whether you live or die, I will uphold our agreement and help your family leave the country. Even if I don't get the pink diamond, I'll still pay you the $300,000."
A beeping sound came from the computer, indicating a received file. William gestured for Christmas to check the laptop.
Christmas nodded and turned the laptop screen towards Solomon.
As soon as the screen turned, Solomon saw his wife, Jessie, holding their younger daughter while the older daughter queued for food. Seeing the small piece of bread each person received, Solomon felt both joy and sorrow, tears streaming down his face. However, his spirits lifted as he watched a man in a white coat approach Jessie and ask if she would like a job doing laundry and cleaning for the volunteers. Jessie eagerly agreed, expressing her gratitude, and happily led her daughters towards the medical tent.
