Beneath The Storm We Bloom

Chapter 3: A Target on His Back

The tension lingered long after Chelsea's sharp words faded down the hallway. As Lucas and Amelia walked in silence, every step seemed to echo with the weight of what had just happened. Lucas might not have cared about the social rules of Excel High, but Amelia knew how things worked here. And Chelsea Greene never let go of a grudge.

"You really shouldn't have done that," Amelia murmured, hugging her bag tighter against her chest.

Lucas glanced sideways at her, his expression calm. "Why not?"

"Because…" She hesitated, searching for the right words. "They're not going to let this go. You're new you don't understand how bad it can get."

"I don't care how bad it gets," Lucas said firmly. "They can't just treat you like that. Someone needs to stop them."

Amelia's heart clenched at his words. No one had ever stood up for her before not like this. But he didn't understand the reality of her world. In this school, kindness was a weakness and Lucas had just made himself a target.

They reached the school courtyard where groups of students clustered together, chatting and eating. Amelia instinctively veered toward the quieter edges, but Lucas matched her stride, refusing to leave her side.

"You really don't have to stick with me," she said quietly. "I'm used to being alone."

"Well, get used to having company," he shot back with a grin. "I'm not going anywhere."

His confidence was so effortless that for a brief moment, Amelia allowed herself to believe him. But her hope faded the second Chelsea and her friends appeared on the far side of the courtyard.

Chelsea's gaze locked onto them like a predator spotting prey. She leaned in to whisper something to her boyfriend, Jason Excel High's star athlete and resident bully. He smirked, cracked his knuckles, and started walking toward them.

Amelia's stomach twisted. "Lucas… maybe we should"

"I've got this," he said, stepping slightly ahead of her.

Jason stopped in front of them, towering over Lucas with a smug expression. "So, you're the new guy." His voice was loud enough to draw attention. "Didn't anyone tell you the rules?"

Lucas raised an eyebrow. "I must've missed the welcome packet. Enlighten me."

A few students laughed quietly. Amelia felt the tension thicken around them. She wanted to pull Lucas away to make him understand that challenging Jason was a mistake.

"The rule is," Jason continued, voice cold, "losers like her" he jerked his thumb toward Amelia "stay at the bottom. And anyone who sides with them?" He leaned in closer. "They pay the price."

Lucas didn't flinch. "You think I'm scared of you?"

Jason's smirk faltered for a fraction of a second. He wasn't used to being challenged.

"You should be." Jason's jaw tightened, and without warning, he shoved Lucas hard in the chest.

Lucas staggered back a step but held his ground. His calm expression shifted something darker flashed in his eyes.

Amelia panicked. "Please… stop," she pleaded softly, her voice barely audible.

Lucas let out a slow breath and met Jason's glare. "I'm not playing your stupid game." His voice was low, controlled. "So, back off."

The challenge hung in the air, daring Jason to make the next move. For a tense moment, it seemed like he might. But then Chelsea called from across the courtyard, "Come on, Jason. He's not worth it."

Jason's lips curled into a sneer. "You're lucky your little girlfriend saved you," he spat before turning away.

As the crowd dispersed, Amelia exhaled shakily. Lucas didn't move, his fists still clenched at his sides.

"You shouldn't have done that," she said again, her voice trembling. "They're going to make your life hell now."

"I told you I'm not afraid of them." He finally turned to face her, his expression softening. "And I'm not going to stand by while they treat you like nothing."

Something inside Amelia cracked something fragile she had tried to protect for so long. No one had ever stood up for her like that. Not once.

But kindness came with a cost. And she knew Chelsea and Jason wouldn't let this slide.

"You're going to regret it," she whispered.

Lucas tilted his head slightly. "I don't regret helping you, Amelia."

His words hung between them too heavy, too real. Before she could respond, the lunch bell rang, shattering the fragile silence.

As they walked back to class, Amelia couldn't shake the feeling that this was only the beginning.

And she was right. Because by the end of the day, Lucas's world would be turned upside down and nothing between them would ever be the same again.

To be continued…
