Chapter 21: Chapter 21 Fever
Looking at his hand that had come up empty, Liu Haoran felt a bitter taste in his heart.
"I'm fine, no need for your concern," she said.
"Susu, even if we can't be husband and wife, can't we still be friends?"
"Friends?" Suxin looked at Liu Haoran in astonishment. Could there be anyone more shameless than this scumbag? Cheating on her before their marriage, holding onto Warm Fragrance in someone else's embrace, yet still having the audacity to think they could be friends? She'd rather be damned than befriend him!
"Susu, no matter what, you can't deny that I'm the person who cares about you the most."
Suxin looked up at Liu Haoran, his eyes somewhat pained, and felt it was all very ironic. "Thanks, but keep your concern for Xu Yunhui!"
Liu Haoran watched helplessly as Suxin turned her back on him, her face resolute.
"Why don't we sit down at the coffee shop over there?" This is the main road, and it's inconvenient to talk here.
"No need, I'm going home now. I think, there's no need for us to talk anymore," she replied.
"Susu, you're always so heartless towards me!"
"Is it me being heartless towards you, or you being heartless towards me? Liu Haoran, can't you see the truth?" Suxin turned around to face Liu Haoran. Heaven knows how much strength it took for her to look him in the eye like this—the man she once was closest to, now a stranger, and in such a treacherous way, no less.
"Let's not discuss that, okay?" Liu Haoran grabbed Suxin's hand. "Tell me, why are you looking for a job? Were you unhappy at your previous company?"
"What if I got fired, huh?" Suxin shook off the hand that was gripping hers, suddenly feeling a sourness in her nose.
"If you really want to join Haidong Securities Company, I'll talk to Ahui. She's the most understanding person, and I'm sure she'll find a way to get you in."
"Liu Haoran..." Suxin looked at him, suddenly feeling very alienated. Was there something wrong with his brain? Neither she nor Xu Yunhui wanted this to happen. "What happens to me is no longer your concern, but thanks for your attention." Suxin turned and walked away, step by step.
Liu Haoran stood behind her, just watching her leave. He understood that things between them could never be the same as before. When you choose one thing, you inevitably lose another precious thing.
"Susu, during these eight years we've been together, did you ever love me?" Liu Haoran's voice rang out from behind Suxin.
"You've always known the answer to that," Suxin didn't turn around, just this response as she continued to walk forward, and this time, saying these words, she suddenly felt no guilt.
"Knowing the answer and still asking... am I really not resigned to it?" Liu Haoran laughed at himself sarcastically, watching Suxin's figure fade away in the distance.
"Haoran, you know, I like you," she had said.
"I want to hear you say you love me."
"I'm sorry, I can't lie to my own heart..."
That was Cheng Suxin, even at their happiest times, whenever he asked this question, the answer was always the same—she never deigned to lie to him, always answering so honestly, yet each time it crushed his heart viciously.
He knew that in her heart lived someone who he could never reach. She had shielded him from the deepest part of her heart; she depended on him, trusted him, yet would never fall in love with him. He often wondered whether she was naive, selfish, or simply heartless?
Opening the car door, Liu Haoran got in, started the car, and drove away. In the world of love, he backed off. Loving someone was exhausting, especially when it was someone who would never love you back. So he left, preferring instead to choose a woman who loved him and could bring a shining future into his life.
Chen Ziqian was in a good mood today. At a gathering with old friends tonight, he met a chick—a popular host of the latest fashion channel on TV, Mi Su. She was tall and stunning, with a delicate face and a fashionable and tasteful style, and above all, she exuded femininity. In every aspect, she matched Chen Ziqian's standards for a girlfriend perfectly. The tall, handsome, humorous, and wealthy Chen Ziqian was always the focus of women's attention wherever he went. The two hit it off immediately upon meeting and boldly came together. Mi Su's gentle and understanding nature made Chen Ziqian feel very comfortable.
After leaving the club, they went for a drive and even stopped for a late-night snack, chatting merrily and both very satisfied.
When he returned home, it was already one in the morning. He opened the front door and was about to search for the light switch when he lifted his foot, "clang" went the sound, and he stepped into something, soaking his pant leg and almost losing his balance. Fortunately, he steadied himself against the wall and avoided falling.
"Click" went the light switch, and confronted by the sight of a bucket rolling away and water all over the floor, Chen Ziqian's good mood instantly evaporated.
"Auntie!" Without a second thought, Chen Ziqian shouted out, sure that no one but the auntie could be responsible for this mess.
The sound was loud, but there was no response. Annoyed, Chen Ziqian put on his slippers and strode over to Suxin's room.
"Auntie! Come out here!"
"Stop hiding in there like a turtle. We're not done until you come out and deal with this!"
The "bang bang bang" of his knocking continued, but there was silence in return.
"What kind of woman is this! Always leaving a mess!" With a final loud knock, Chen Ziqian turned away, but then he suddenly spotted something that looked like a person on the living room sofa. Auntie? Was she actually sleeping on the sofa in the middle of the night? And so carelessly in her nightgown?
A low-cut lace nightgown, not much fabric to it, though it covered what it should, the revealed skin wasn't just a little; her fair skin and full curves were faintly visible through the lace, with a hint of spring scenery.
"What kind of woman sleeps like this in plain sight as if she owns the place?"
Chen Ziqian crouched down and pushed Suxin, but she still didn't wake up.
"Sleeping like a pig! Wake up! Go back to your room to sleep!" Chen Ziqian said as he gently patted Suxin's cheek.
But something was off. Why was the auntie's cheek so hot?
Concerned, he touched Suxin's forehead again, "It's so hot; she must have a fever. Is there something wrong with this woman? She always has some bizarre issue."
"Hey, Auntie, wake up!" Chen Ziqian slapped Suxin again.
Finally, Suxin stirred in a daze, yet her eyes remained closed.
"She's burning up. If I don't take her to the hospital and something happens in the middle of the night, what then?" Chen Ziqian worriedly thought.
After staring at Suxin for a few seconds, Chen Ziqian finally gave in, resignedly grabbed a jacket from his room to cover Suxin, then picked her up and walked out the front door.
"Never have I encountered such a troublesome woman!"
