Chapter 10: Chapter 10: The Vegetable-selling Auntie
She opened the T-city talent network and had to search for suitable positions for herself.
After searching, a long list appeared, but as she looked at each requirement, Suxin furrowed her brows.
"What the heck? There are so many, and they all require relevant work experience?" Suxin couldn't help complaining.
She had graduated from T University with a degree in finance, a well-known university whose reputation was strong in T-city. Finding a job shouldn't have been difficult for her, but the curse was that she had spent five years at an import and export trading company doing odd jobs and had learned absolutely no relevant skills. Previously, she had been happy to coast along, doing odd jobs without taxing her brain, satisfied as long as the salary was decent, but now, looking at the dazzling "requires two or even more years of relevant work experience" on the computer screen, she found it intolerably irritating.
"I just want to find a simple clerical job, not apply for a managerial position. Even ordinary positions have so many demands, it's just outrageous!" Suxin complained again.
"The few that don't require work experience offer such low salaries, those wages would barely be acceptable for an intern. I've worked for five years after all; how am I supposed to live on such a meager salary?"
"Never mind all that, I'll just claim five years of work experience, without specifying the field. That doesn't count as lying, right?" Thinking this, Suxin added "five years of work experience" to her résumé and then sent it to a few companies she liked. With her diploma, academic background, and five years of experience, she was confident that those companies would call her for an interview. The current problem was how to pass the interview?
"My experience is lacking, but if I dress up pretty, maybe they'll pass me during the interview?" Thinking this, Suxin subconsciously looked down at her own clothes: a beige coat, a black under-shirt, and a pair of jeans below—it was really too plain, no wonder that kid had called her an old lady!
"No, I have to change this outfit, or I won't pass the interview!"
With that thought, Suxin grabbed her bag and headed out to Jiuguang Department Store, the most comprehensive and upscale department store in T-city, bursting with an array of goods from both international and domestic top brands.
Suxin usually went shopping with either Liu Haoran or Bai Xiaoyan, it was really unprecedented for her to come here alone like today. She was slightly overweight, so she had a habit of trying clothes on first; if they looked good, then she would check the price.
She didn't recognize those brands with English letter combinations nor cared; anything that made it into Jiuguang Department Store surely wasn't bad. She only needed to look at the clothes.
Suxin tried on a few outfits, but none worked—they were either too small or looked ugly on her.
"Strange, the clothes looked nice hanging there, but why do they look like this on me? Could it really be that I'm too ugly to look decent?"
As she passed the "Dior" counter, a green long dress worn by a model caught Suxin's eye. It had a deep V-neck and a slim lower half with a design of white magnolia flowers at the hem—simple, yet elegant.
The moment Suxin saw it, she really liked it and rushed over to ask the clerk for her size and went into the fitting room.
The moment Chen Ziqian turned around, he saw Suxin happily carrying the dress into the fitting room.
"Old lady?" Glancing at the dress on the model, "The old lady is wearing that dress?" Just the thought made Chen Ziqian chuckle.
"Right, wasn't that the dress Shanni also went in to try on just now?" Shanni was a sophomore at the Music Academy whom he had met at a friend's gathering two days earlier.
While deep in thought, a blonde beauty with magnificent long hair emerged from the changing room to her right. She was young, with big eyes, a slender waist, and long legs. The green dress she wore appeared as if it was custom-made for her, flowing and stunning.
"Ziqian, what do you think?" Shanni, wearing the dress, swayed left and right in front of the mirror to show it off.
"It's fine," Chen Ziqian put down the magazine he was holding. "If you like it, just buy it."
"Yeah, then I..." Shanni's smile froze when she saw Suxin coming out of the changing room on the left, wearing the same style and color of dress.
Xiaobai? What a coincidence to run into her here?
As soon as she saw Chen Ziqian, Suxin inwardly cursed her misfortune. When she saw the beauty beside him wearing the same dress, she was even more embarrassed. The beauty was dressed just like her? Did they really have to clash like this?
That's what inferiority feels like. The beauty wore the dress, and it discouraged her from even daring to look in the mirror. But retracting just like that would be a joke, wouldn't it?
Thinking this, Suxin held her head high and walked over to the mirror as if no one else was around.
The mirror was large, reflecting both of their forms. Suxin swung from side to side, contemplating how the dress looked on her, while unavoidably sneaking glances at the beauty's effect in the dress.
"Why can't I bring out the beauty of this dress like that? It's frustrating, is it really because I'm too plain looking, or too fat? Look at that beauty, then back at myself, dizzying, it's ridiculous," Suxin muttered in her heart, while her face bore a smile, "It seems quite nice."
"Ziqian, I don't want this dress anymore!" Shanni grabbed Ziqian's hand and spoke with a face full of displeasure.
"Oh? It looks good on you," Chen Ziqian's voice was gentle, as he glanced at the woman wearing the dress.
"Didn't you see the clash? Suddenly, this dress feels so cheap!" Shanni complained, feeling aggrieved.
Suxin felt irritated upon hearing this. Did this Xiaobai only pick women based on their wealth? What kind of morals were these?
"If it were a popular superstar clashing dresses with you, would you still feel it cheapens the dress?" Suxin turned and looked up directly at Shanni.
"But are you a superstar? Wearing that dress, you still look like a vegetable-selling auntie!" Shanni was unhappy as well since she was always the pampered girl, the pearl in her family's palm. When had anyone ever spoken to her with that tone?
"I'm a vegetable-selling auntie?" Suxin was absolutely furious. What kind of luck did she have recently, constantly running into weirdos?
"Even if I am a vegetable-selling auntie, your morals aren't much better than mine! Is your beauty all that matters? Does the dress become cheap because I wore it? Dresses are made to be worn by people. You can buy one, and so can I! There's no rule here saying that vegetable-selling aunties can't buy them!" Suxin vented, resentful. Why did this woman have to be so tall? Didn't she know how tiring it was for her to look up while speaking?
Chen Ziqian watched Suxin with interest. Was this older lady always this explosive every time she appeared? Thinking about last night's filth, he felt a tightness in his chest.
