Chapter 123: 123: Hell Butterfly
"Hm?"
Just as Haruki and the others had anticipated, the moment they stepped into the courtyard, the scene before them made Haruki frown.
Scattered across the vast grounds of the Cartel estate were corpses in various states of death. Some appeared to be guards, others maids. The scene was gruesome and soaked in blood.
But it wasn't the gore that troubled Haruki. He had witnessed scenes far worse—some of which he had caused himself.
What truly disturbed him were the conditions of the corpses. Aside from a few who had been cleanly beheaded, many of the bodies were nude, covered in all manner of wounds. Some had legs twisted at unnatural angles, reduced to mangled flesh. Their wide, unblinking eyes spoke of intense agony before death. And what puzzled Haruki most was that not all the victims were women—some were men as well.
Swish swish...
Although disturbed, Haruki didn't hesitate. With a wave of his hand, countless butterflies—purple-black in color, etched with cross-shaped patterns—burst forth. They radiated an aura of darkness and mystery, their flight painting a mesmerizing scene across the air.
But what they did next was anything but beautiful.
The butterflies swarmed the corpses, and in a matter of moments, a chilling rustling filled the air as the bodies were stripped down to nothing—not even bones remained.
...
"Brother, what happened here? And what are these butterflies? They're so pretty... why do they feel so familiar?"
The girls had just caught up. Haruki had moved fast and arrived a step ahead.
As they entered, Chelsea immediately questioned him. The others saw only scattered bloodstains and the eerie, elegant dance of the butterflies.
The real reason Haruki had rushed to dispose of the bodies was simple—he didn't want the women to see them. Not out of fear they'd be frightened, but because he couldn't stand the thought of them seeing the naked bodies of others, even if they were corpses.
"I'm not sure what exactly happened. But when I got here, the place was full of corpses. As for the butterflies... they're my pets. They're creatures of darkness too, which is probably why you feel a connection."
Haruki kept his explanation brief in response to Chelsea's question.
These weren't ordinary butterflies. Called Hell Butterflies, Haruki had stumbled upon them in the System's exchange list years ago. He'd exchanged for them on a whim when he had points to spare, but never used them—until now. They had remained in hibernation within his storage space.
Hell Butterflies were the iconic familiars of Tyki Mikk from the anime D.Gray-man. They possessed an incredible devouring ability, capable of consuming almost anything at terrifying speeds due to their vast numbers—perfect tools for erasing evidence.
But that wasn't all. These butterflies also had formidable offensive power. They could convert devoured energy into destructive energy blasts or morph into weapons under their master's command. In short, they weren't just cleanup tools—they were weapons of war.
According to legend, Hell Butterflies were based on Scylla, the embodiment of despair, a being shaped like a butterfly who was created by God to punish both mortals and fallen angels.
Like vampires—children of darkness—the Hell Butterflies were also dark-aligned beings. That was why Chelsea instinctively felt drawn to them.
...
"Let's go inside and take a look."
After some thought, Haruki made the call. As the Security Minister, he hadn't received any report of an attack on the Cartel family, which meant this must've just happened. That meant Lina could still be alive.
Since they didn't know the exact layout of the residence, they could only head inward and search as best they could.
Along the way, the opulent halls were stained with blood. It was clear more bodies had once been here, but the Hell Butterflies had already cleaned them away. Still, the sight weighed heavily on Haruki's heart.
...
"You bastard! Let go of my son!"
A furious roar echoed from deeper inside the estate, snapping everyone's attention in an instant.
"Let's move!"
Haruki acted immediately, charging toward the direction of the voice.
The reason for his urgency—he recognized the voice. It belonged to Cartel, Lina's father, whom they had met on the warship.
