Chapter 49: Glowing Purple Eyes
Ryuji wakes up.
Around the seventh day, they were just one day away from Los Angeles.
The thought of visiting Hollywood crossed Ryuji's mind. He briefly wondered if legends like Marilyn Monroe or Audrey Hepburn had already graced the silver screen—only to realize they hadn't yet made their mark in history.
In the cruise ship's restaurant, the scene was absurd. The diners stared, slack-jawed, as the seemingly unassuming man devoured food like a black hole.
Ryuji was ravenous. Starving didn't quite cover it—he felt like he could consume an entire elephant, maybe even two.
The grand table in front of him was piled high, but the dishes vanished at a shocking speed. Pasta, burgers, pizza... all gone. It didn't take long for the chefs to resort to bringing out whole roasted legs of lamb, beef, and suckling pigs just to keep up with his appetite.
By the time the chaos had settled, a rough count revealed Ryuji had eaten enough food to feed over a hundred people.
The most baffling thing? His stomach didn't even look bloated. Where did it all go?
Ryuji leaned back in his chair with a satisfied sigh. "Ah... finally full."
Samir, his ever-loyal companion, stared at the scene in disbelief. "My wallet isn't, though. This feast has put a dent in my savings!"
Samir wasn't exaggerating. His financial resources, mainly tied up in a modest London villa, were dwindling fast. The post-war economy was in shambles, and selling property in such conditions was a pipe dream.
Ryuji chuckled, clapping Samir on the shoulder. "Don't worry, my friend. You'll see your wallet recover soon enough."
Before Samir could respond, a smug blonde man sauntered over. He wore an air of arrogance, a grin plastered across his face as if he'd just won a prize.
"Hey, buddy," the blonde said, his tone dripping with mockery. "With an appetite like yours, you'd sweep the competition at any American eating contest."
Ryuji's brow furrowed. Something about this man felt familiar, and not in a good way.
The blonde kept talking, his words laced with subtle disdain. "What's the plan, huh? Coming to America to conquer us?"
Ryuji's sharp mind immediately caught on to the insult buried in the man's tone. He wasn't being asked a genuine question; this was a jab at his heritage.
The subtle racism didn't surprise Ryuji. He knew all too well about the prejudice that ran rampant in the United States during this era. Laws like the Chinese Exclusion Act were still fresh, and many immigrants had faced unfair treatment despite their contributions to society.
Ryuji clenched his fists under the table, rage simmering just below the surface. He had no intention of letting this smug fool walk away unscathed.
The blonde man wasn't done yet. His gaze shifted to Diana, Ryuji's companion, as his smirk widened. "What's a beautiful woman like you doing with a... man like him?"
Diana's eyes narrowed. Before she could respond, Ryuji stood, his eyes flashing a brilliant purple.
"Leave. Now." His voice was calm, but the power behind it was undeniable.
The blonde man froze, his arrogance crumbling into fear. Without a word, he stumbled backward and practically sprinted out of the restaurant.
The room fell silent. The other diners, who had been quietly watching the interaction, suddenly found their meals very interesting.
Ryuji smirked, turning to Samir. "See? Told you the wallet would recover soon."
Samir chuckled despite himself. "I guess you weren't kidding."
Diana, however, wasn't entirely pleased. "Was that really necessary?" she asked as they left the restaurant.
"Yes," Ryuji replied firmly. He explained the history of the discrimination faced by immigrants, painting a picture of injustice that made Diana's heart ache.
"I see," she said softly. "I didn't realize it was that bad."
Ryuji nodded, his expression hardening. "It's about time someone stood up to them."
Later, in their cabin, Diana glanced at Ryuji's glowing eyes. "What's happening to you?" she asked, her voice tinged with concern.
Ryuji smiled, his purple eyes glowing brighter for a moment. "This? It's the power of arcane energy."
The light in his eyes shimmered like a pair of stars, captivating and mysterious.
Diana didn't press further, though she couldn't help but feel a strange mix of awe and unease. Whatever this power was, she had a feeling it was only the beginning.
