Chapter 349: Stampede?
"June? What's wrong?" Bel asked in worry, seeing that June had gone quiet and their carriage had stopped moving.
"I saw him," June said in a serious voice.
"Saw who? I'm dying to know what is happening," Bel asked eagerly, as she could only see a small part in front because of the small window. Then she stuck her head out from the side window to get a better look. But as she saw that nothing was going on in front, she couldn't help but be annoyed. "June, don't play games."
"I'm not playing games, Miss Bel," June said, his tone void of playfulness. "I saw Mr. Beggar flying over us. It seems like he is in a hurry."
"Really?" Bel's eyes widened. "Where do you think he's going?"
"I think…" June calculated the direction and how eager the Beggar seemed to be before he came up with an answer. "If I have to guess, it seems like he is going to the Mayor's Castle."
Hearing this, Bel's eyes glinted in delight. "Then we must go there! Who knows, maybe he will join us to go to the Manida Land."
June was silent for a moment before he shook his head. "I don't think that's a good idea. We will have to wait here and wait for the news."
"But…" Bel pouted, as she really wanted to go and meet Yoma. It's been weeks since they last talked, and she wants to learn more from him. "I really wa—"
"We will wait," June's serious tone dampened Bel's mood, and in the end, Bel stuck her head back inside.
"Alright then," Bel sighed. "I hope nothing is wrong."
"Hmm," June didn't say a word as he settled their carriage on the side, before he jumped off it. Then he began looking around along with Bel's personal guards to look for potential dangers.
A few minutes later, someone on a horse could be seen running towards them.
June took a step forward and narrowed his eyes. He saw that the person on top of the horse was one of the Mayor's guards, and in his hand was a scroll.
Clearly in a hurry, the guard stopped the horse in front of June before handing the scroll to him, not even bothering to give a salute.
Once the guard handed the scroll, he began dashing off to another place with his horse. He also took out another scroll, though this time it was a simple-looking one, different from the scroll laced with gold in June's hands.
Seeing that the guard was handing the scroll to another person—the captain of the east gate—June knew that the contents inside the scroll must be very important.
And sure enough, after reading what was written inside, June's expression turned grave. He walked towards the carriage, where he handed the scroll to Bel. "We will have to go back inside."
"Are we going to go and meet him?" Bel asked excitedly as she held the scroll.
"Unfortunately, no," June shook his head. "Mr. Beggar is probably already gone. The Mayor wanted us to go back inside. You should read the scroll, Miss Bel."
"Oh," Bel was disappointed, but upon seeing the grave expression on June's face, she knew something must be happening that she still didn't know about. Obviously, it's written on the scroll.
She opened the scroll, and after she read it, her eyes widened in fear.
"Beast Stampede?!" Bel uttered in shock, as she couldn't believe that such a thing would happen. No! It's already happening—the beasts are already on their way! "How could this happen? Didn't we just deal with something like that because of that disgusting fat Klown?"
Beast Stampede is a phenomenon that happens rarely, though it depends on the history of a city—and in Belthias City, this is going to be its fourth time!
The first Beast Stampede in the city happened 20 years ago, almost destroying the city completely and having to be built again from the ground up. Then 10 years ago, the second stampede happened, killing a lot of the city's soldiers and Cultivators from the Martial Schools.
The third just happened recently, where the previous Mayor, Klown, rallied up the surrounding monsters to make a distraction to buy himself some time. Though his plan failed, if the Beast Stampede had entered the city, it would probably have been the same case as the first.
And now, the contents of the scrolls tell that a Beast Stampede is about to happen, and they must evacuate inside the city as soon as possible.
"We have to go now," June said as he hopped on the carriage driver's seat.
At the same time, Cultivators arrived at the east gate, wearing robes that covered their bodies from head to toe. Their attire had mysterious symbols surrounding the whole fabric—uncomprehensible to normal people, but to the Cultivators, it's the symbol of a certain great profession:
The Array Masters or Inscription Masters.
These Cultivators were divided into groups, as they came from different Martial Schools in the city, and although they operated differently, they all had the same goal.
As Bel's carriage passed by them, she watched in curiosity, as it's not an everyday occurrence to see Array Masters do their work. Even she hasn't seen much from them.
The Array Masters took out brushes and pre-made talismans. Some used water, while some used fire as their medium.
They waved their hands in the air, and symbols began appearing. These glowing symbols then expanded, covering the east gate and beyond.
Bel looked up and saw that the symbols reached the sky. She also saw such things happening from the other side of the city, as the Array Masters surrounded Belthias to cover it with a protective barrier.
Such a large-scale barrier… This alone tells the gravity of the situation.
The symbols glowed brilliantly for a moment before they became a complete translucent barrier.
The people on the street were surprised at the sudden appearance of the barrier, and many started to get an idea as to the reason why. Great dangers are awaiting them.
They panicked, and the soldiers had to go out and calm them.Meanwhile, Bel and June finally reached the Mayor's Castle, where they were welcomed by the Mayor himself.
"Bel," Mathias said, his voice and face serious.
"Father," Bel greeted upon stepping out of the carriage. "We still haven't left the city, and you already miss me?"
"I wish that could be the case," Mathias said with a bitter smile. "You have read the scroll, right? You will have to stay inside the castle."
"But…" Bel wanted to protest, as she wanted to go out and help fight off the monsters, but knowing her father, she only shook her head. "Where is he?"
"He already left. He's fighting a Translucent Thunder Rat… If even that monster decided to join this Stampede, the city is in danger," Mathias said with a grave expression.
