Chapter 76: Before the Final Battle
"Scar's strength? How?" Alex asked, trying to understand what kind of substance the elder was offering. He wanted to see if it was true and what the side effects might be, as something this powerful couldn't possibly come without consequences.
"This thing grants you Scar's strength," Fuji explained. "It's something Scar created, but due to a lack of material—what he called the 'reagent'—he couldn't produce more. When we were exiled, we took the opportunity to steal it from him. We believe he modified this substance, combining it with the calming plants we were cultivating, to create what he gave to our neighbors."
Fuji paused before continuing:
"I remember Scar saying that this could grant anyone his strength for one hour. After being exiled, we tested it. We couldn't do many tests, but the one we managed proved he was right. There's just one issue: after consuming it, you'll crave more. However, unlike the Enraged, the craving is short-lived and manageable."
As Alex pondered this, Max stepped forward and questioned the elder:
"Your name is Fuji, right? How can we trust that everything you're saying is true and not some kind of trap? This could very well be poison."
Speaking in a threatening tone, Max glared at Fuji, waiting for his response.
Without breaking eye contact, Fuji sighed and placed the green sphere into his mouth.
"Fine. I'll prove I'm not lying, and you'll see for yourselves that what I said is true."
Moments later, Fuji began to sweat, his skin flushing slightly, as though he had eaten something very spicy.
"There. I now have strength like Scar's. It only lasts an hour. How would you like to test it?"
Seeing Fuji's actions, Alex asked why he didn't confront Scar himself with that strength.
"I would face Scar if I could," Fuji replied, "but as I said, Scar is not just strong—he's incredibly intelligent. Our former leader, Scar's father, also consumed this and became very strong, but Scar defeated him without much difficulty. Not through strength, but skill."
Skills, Alex thought. He knew that strength wasn't everything; a person's skills could completely dominate another, even someone stronger or of equal level.
"Alright. Prove your strength," Alex said, looking at his weary tribe members. "Since I have a fight tomorrow, show your power... by punching that tree over there."
Pointing to a nearby tree, Alex watched as Fuji approached it. He prepared himself and delivered a mighty punch that echoed loudly. When Fuji pulled his hand back, there was a hole in the tree in the shape of his fist.
Everyone was stunned by the display, as it was an incredible feat of strength.
"So, do you believe me now?" Fuji asked.
Alex smiled.
