chapter 102
Even though Eunoh's appearance was originally his own, Lowell couldn't help but feel strangely awkward.
“I called out to you a few times, but you didn’t hear me.”
It didn’t take long for him to realize that the unease came from the other’s expressions and tone.
“Um… are you really Lowell?”
“That’s a fun way to put it! So you’re the fake Lowell now, and I’m the fake Eunoh?”
Lowell was just as cheerful as his expression suggested. There wasn’t a trace of seriousness in him—it was nearly impossible to find. It was a personality type that Lowell had a hard time dealing with.
“But I like the name Eunoh better, so please call me that.”
“Yes, Mr. Eunoh. Could you explain what’s going on right now? Do you… maybe want your body back?”
Lowell brought up the question he’d been secretly dreading. If he didn’t ask now, even if he kept living as Lowell, he’d probably always carry a lingering unease. But Eunoh flinched in surprise—then burst into laughter.
“No! Of course not. I couldn’t live without my smartphone now. Just yesterday, I ✧ NоvеIight ✧ (Original source) got scolded for watching it twenty hours straight.”
Lowell chuckled at the words of a young man who’d only been in the modern world for a year. He didn’t know who had scolded him, but it made sense.
“Plus, I like this healthy body, and I have a rich, kind boyfriend! There’s no reason for me to go back.”
“A kind boyfriend?”
“Yep. He’s big, but such a klutz that I have to take care of everything.”
Eunoh puffed out his chest with pride as he spoke. Lowell thought to himself that the person in front of him actually seemed more like the klutz. He found himself wondering who the poor guy was that had to be taken care of by someone like this.
Maybe he’s just pretending to be taken care of?
Of course, Lowell had enough social grace not to ask that out loud. Instead, he chose to ask what actually needed asking.
“Then why did you keep calling out to me, Mr. Eunoh?”
“Oh, right! I thought I should explain why our bodies got switched.”
“You know the reason?”
“Yep! It’s all my fault.”
Lowell stared quietly, wondering just what kind of nonsense this unpredictable young man was about to say.
“I was playing in the mountains and found a snake—it was injured! I felt bad for it, so I poured some healing potion on it. Later, the divine beast explained that he got into a fight with a monster during molting.”
Lowell couldn’t really follow the flow of the conversation, but he stayed silent and listened. Truthfully, there were a thousand things he wanted to object to.
Like—why did someone with that weak a body go hiking? Why would anyone treat an injured snake just because they happened upon it? If it was a divine beast, it must’ve been huge—wasn’t he worried it was dangerous? And could you even call something like that a “snake”?
The list went on.
Better to just let it go.
Lowell decided that when someone this scatterbrained was talking, it was best not to interrupt and risk changing the subject. Better to let them finish and ask questions after.
“Anyway, the divine beast said that since I saved him, he’d grant me one wish. So I said I wanted to live a long, romantic life full of love.”
Lowell covered his mouth to stifle a laugh. His personality was so innocent it bordered on idiotic.
“Then he said that wasn’t possible in this body. That there was no suitable partner for me in this world, and that if I stayed, I’d die soon! So I asked him to just send me to the place where my match was.”
Lowell was finally beginning to piece the story together.
“But I’d read a novel about this world in the place I originally came from.”
“Oh, the divine beast explained that part too… what was it again…”
Eunoh clutched his head with both hands, trying to remember—then his expression brightened.
“Oh right! Because he had to make sure the wish came true, my body and soul had to survive a long time. So for you to live in my body, you needed some kind of guide, and he sent that in a way that fit your world. Language was one part of it—wasn’t it strange how you understood a language you’d never heard before?”
“It was just like English.”
Lowell had always thought the novel had simply been set in an English-speaking world, so that there’d be no language barrier.
“I’ve never even seen Korean letters before, but I opened my eyes and could read them just fine! It felt like I’d become a genius—it was great.”
Eunoh laughed brightly, his voice clear and ringing. It was the first time Lowell realized that Eunoh’s body could smile like that.
“I studied a bit about this body too before switching over! Though I didn’t really understand half of it.”
Lowell started to feel worried about how Eunoh was surviving in the harsh, fast-paced modern world. But he quickly decided it wasn’t his place to worry like that—it was a condescending way of thinking, and he shook his head.
“Thank you for explaining. So that’s why you called me?”
“Hmm… yeah! Actually, you hadn’t fully accepted the body yet, so you hadn’t settled in. The divine beast said that when the connection between body and soul weakens, like when you lose consciousness, we could end up switching back again. I know it’s a body that gets sick a lot and is kind of a hassle, but if you’re happy with it, I just wanted to tell you—it’s okay to fully accept it.”
Lowell let out a soft “ah.” There was only one reason he hadn’t fully accepted the body, despite being content with life as Lowell.
Because he pitied the real Lowell. And felt guilty.
That feeling had surged for the first time when he saw the Count and Countess Clarke. And it had only grown stronger after seeing them try to kill their own child without hesitation.
He’s someone I never even met, but… if it had been the original Lowell, he probably would’ve been hurt by all this.
Lowell gave a bitter smile. He probably thought he was hiding it well, but Eunoh had been glancing at him, reading his expression from the beginning.
Maybe he just wanted to ease the burden on my heart.
Eunoh’s patience didn’t last long.
“I’m happy now, so I hope you’re happy too, Mr. Lowell! You’ve found romantic love in this world too, haven’t you?”
“Yes.”
Lowell thought the phrase “romantic love” sounded childish—but still answered proudly.
“Then I guess this is our final goodbye. Thank you, Mr. Eunoh.”
“Hehe, you too, Mr. Lowell! You can head back that way.”
The two of them shook hands lightly and turned away from each other. Lowell’s footsteps grew quicker as he walked down the glowing path.
I want to see Felix. Right now.
His heart was lighter than it had ever been. At the end of the path, Lowell smiled radiantly.
***
Morris, who had stayed up for two nights straight, suddenly opened his eyes wide. Felix, who had been resting his face in the crook of Lowell’s neck, quickly straightened up.
“Lord Lowell will wake up soon. He’s on his way back through the dream.”
The tension in the room rose instantly. Felix ignored his pounding heart and focused every ounce of his attention on Lowell. Until now, Lowell had been as motionless as a doll—but now, his fingertips twitched, and his eyelids trembled faintly.
Felix looked at him with a face full of disbelief, as if witnessing a miracle—on the verge of tears.
Lowell opened his eyes without delay. The moment he met Felix’s gaze, he smiled softly.
“Felix, I missed you.”
“Yeah, me too.”
Felix reached out and clasped Lowell’s hand, which had risen to cup his cheek.
“I’m sorry I kept it from you.”
“Like I said—it’s fine. You came back. That’s all that matters.”
Felix’s voice was thick with emotion. Lowell felt a sharp ache in his chest, realizing that he was the reason Felix had become like this.
“Your face… you look awful…”
Lowell wanted to talk more—but he shut his mouth as a sudden wave of pain struck him.
The stab wound hasn’t fully healed?
But it didn’t feel like a blade wound. The sensation was deeper, different. And it was growing stronger, like the beat of a war drum.
“Fel… Felix?”
Lowell, startled, suddenly noticed there were unfamiliar people in the room.
“Lowell, don’t be scared. Listen carefully.”
Felix’s voice was gentle, like soothing a child—but it cracked at the end, unable to hide the tension.
They always say ‘don’t be scared’ right before something terrifying…
Lowell had just regained consciousness, but his mind was already swimming.
“You have to give birth right now. If you don’t… your body won’t survive.”
“…What?”
Lowell didn’t have time to question it further. A searing pain—like his whole body was being torn apart—hit him all at once. The attendants who had been on standby rushed to his bedside in perfect sync.
“You’ll be okay, Lowell.”
Felix whispered like he was trying to convince himself. Looking at Lowell writhing in agony, he felt like he could sell his soul if it meant taking the pain away for him.
After five hellish hours for both of them…
The sound of a newborn’s cry echoed through the guestroom.
