Chapter 12: EP 12
I left Yoo Ha-yeon sleeping on the bed for a while and climbed up to the rooftop of the department store.
Well, it's more of a terrace than a rooftop.
The floor I was on was the topmost one of the department store, where fancy restaurants and large cafes are located.
And beyond the door leading to the terrace, there's an outdoor space styled like a small garden.
"…Fuck, it's so high up."
Of course, with the power out, elevators and escalators are out of service.
So, stairs it is.
The problem is, climbing 8 floors by stairs is a fucking chore.
'Is there no other way?'
Not that we'd need to use the upper floors much anyway.
Most of what we need is on the lower floors, and the stuff up here like cinemas and restaurants aren't useful now.
"I really hope this works out on the first try."
I touched the rice I brought from the grocery section in the basement and the butterfly net from the kids' section on the 4th floor.
The animals I'm after are pigeons.
In this urban hellhole where humans are the only living things, pigeons are the most common animal you'll see.
Perfect for testing my skill that only works on dead animals.
'Lucky there are a few around.'
I've caught pigeons before.
You might wonder why a modern person like me has caught pigeons, right?
It was right after the zombie outbreak when we were trapped in the dorm with no food.
Back then, we were getting anxious about our dwindling food supplies, so someone suggested catching pigeons.
We had some rice left since we couldn't cook without electricity.
"Here, birdie birdie~ Here's some food~"
I sat on a bench, scattering some rice I brought with me.
City pigeons, despite being wild animals, have almost no fear of humans.
They'll fly away if you just walk up to them, but if you toss them some food, they'll ignore you and rush to eat.
-Goo, goo, goo.
Even now, with the zombie apocalypse, they're the same.
After a moment of hesitation, once one started eating, they all rushed in to feed.
They looked like fucking chickens.
Even their fat bodies looked like chickens.
Once they're this close, it's easy.
Just snatch them up with the butterfly net I brought, quick and careful.
-Flap! Flap!
"Easy peasy."
As soon as I caught one, the others flew off like the unloyal bastards they are.
Reminded me of the survivors in the dorm who ignored me when I was sent out to scout.
"Poor thing, don't worry. I'll let you be reborn, just like those bitten by zombies."
-Flap! Flap!
Obviously, the pigeon couldn't understand me and kept flapping its wings.
"…But how do I kill it?"
Now that I had a pigeon, I was stuck on how to kill it.
With a regular chicken, you'd just chop its head off?
But I don't need pigeon meat.
I need a zombie pigeon for my skill.
'If it gets too damaged, it'll be useless…'
Like the zombies outside with broken legs or missing lower bodies.
Some even have broken jaws and can't bite.
Those just become useless meat lumps.
If this pigeon gets hurt, it'll be as useless as a chicken just walking around.
"Ah! That's it!"
I had a brilliant idea and immediately headed downstairs.
Yoo Ha-yeon was still asleep in the bedding section on the third floor.
'I guess showing her this isn't the best idea.'
Even though she trusts me, seeing me kill a pigeon might make her think I'm nuts.
That could break the trust we've built.
So, I went down to the basement.
To the grocery section.
"Let's give our little pigeon a drink, shall we?"
I poured some bottled water into a container to make a little pool.
Then I dunked the pigeon's head in it, holding its wings to keep it from thrashing.
After a while, the pigeon's movements slowed down.
'Just to be sure, let's leave it like this for a few more minutes.'
This way, I could kill the pigeon without damaging its body.
-Drip, drip.
Once it stopped moving completely, I pulled it out. It was dead, just dripping water.
"Done! Did you see that? Success!"
-Ughhh…
Excited to finally test my skill, I spoke to my friend lying nearby.
I didn't know his name, but he seemed happy, making a noise in response.
'Let's test this out right away!'
I sat down to use my skill, but then I remembered something from the skill description.
'Possession, huh.'
Possession.
As far as I know, it means my mind would take over the body.
Does that mean I'll put my mind into this dead pigeon?
'What happens to my body then?'
No matter how I thought about it, it seemed like I'd be defenseless.
So, I moved back to the bedding section on the third floor.
I sat on the bed where Yoo Ha-yeon was still asleep and placed the dead pigeon on the floor right in front of me.
'…Alright, here goes.'
After a few tries, I got the hang of using the skill.
It was simple, just thinking about the skill name.
[Using Moving Corpse LV 1.]
A message kindly informed me when the skill was activated.
-Whoosh.
I felt something leave my body, and a blue light enveloped the pigeon's corpse.
-Creak, creak.
The supposedly dead pigeon twisted its body in a bizarre way and stood up.
A moving corpse, just as described.
"…This is fucking awesome."
Seeing a zombie every day is one thing, but watching an animal I killed come back to life was a whole new experience.
The resurrected pigeon just stood there, looking at me without moving.
-Ding.
[Successfully used 'Moving Corpse' on the species 'Pigeon'.]
[Entity Name: None.
Species: Pigeon.
Traits: Flight, Bird's Eye View.
Current Status: Healthy.]
Messages about the skill's success and the pigeon's status appeared before me.
"But why isn't it moving?"
It was a zombie pigeon now, but it wasn't moving.
Maybe it needed food?
'Wait, what if it attacks Ha-yeon?'
The thought of food made me realize I hadn't considered Yoo Ha-yeon's safety.
But luckily, it showed no sign of attacking the sleeping Yoo Ha-yeon.
'Maybe it'll move if I give it a command?'
My job is a necromancer.
A job that revives the dead to use them.
So, this zombie pigeon should obey me.
"Uh… um… let's try this, give me your hand?"
I extended my hand like training a dog.
And then.
-Flap!
The zombie pigeon lightly flew onto my hand.
"Wow! This is incredible!"
A zombie that follows my commands.
Not like the wild zombies outside, but one that obeys me, a living corpse.
In some ways, more useful than a slave like Yoo Ha-yeon.
'If I can make more of these, maybe even humans…'
If I could increase the number of these entities, I could have an army of zombies at my command.
'…Those fucking soldiers, I've been thinking about how to screw them over. This skill is perfect.'
The soldiers have plenty of guns and ammo.
They prioritized that over food when they left the base.
So even though I want revenge, right now, alone, I stand no chance.
All I have is my immunity to zombies.
If I go to them now, I'll end up like a beehive, game over.
'I need to grow my power and increase my slaves.'
And when I'm strong enough to make guns irrelevant, I'll go after them.
Thinking about them begging for death made me smile.
"But what's this possession thing?"
I looked at the pigeon on my hand, puzzled.
The skill description mentioned possession, but what was it exactly?
'…Possession.'
-Ding.
[Do you wish to use 'Possession' on the species 'Pigeon'?]
Thinking about possession while looking at the pigeon brought up a message.
"Damn, this is convenient."
Without hesitation, I selected [Yes].
The entrance to the third floor was secured with locks and chains, so no one could easily get in.
Here, even if my body was left vulnerable, it should be safe.
Especially with Yoo Ha-yeon nearby.
[Starting possession of the species 'Pigeon'.]
As the message appeared, my mind began to blur.
. . .
'Fucking amazing.'
-Whoosh!
I was flying in the sky.
I've felt like I could fly during sex with Yoo Ha-yeon, but now, I was actually flying.
As a pigeon.
'I didn't expect this… this skill is incredibly useful.'
Flying freely over the city of Seoul, looking down.
The world seen through a pigeon's eyes was sharp, even at high speeds.
I could almost see behind me.
'This is like a drone.'
A drone I can control with my own eyes.
Unlike a regular drone that can only observe, this one could physically interact with the world.
Like a carrier pigeon of old.
I could deliver messages or small items to distant people.
With cell phones out of service due to the zombie apocalypse, this ability to communicate from afar was a huge advantage.
Plus.
'Thankfully, they're still alive.'
I flew over the dorm where I used to hide and spotted them.
I perched on a nearby branch to look inside through the windows.
I couldn't hear voices, but I could see them clearly.
'How to keep tabs on them was a problem, but now it's solved.'
The group of survivors still struggling with food shortages.
The soldiers lining up to satisfy their needs with Shin Ju-ha.
And Cha Su-ah, still sucking off the squad leader.
'The fuckers are still at it.'
I wanted to fuck them over right now, but I held back.
My time would come.
'…New faces?'
I noticed some unfamiliar faces.
Young men and women, probably around my age, likely university students.
'Must have joined from nearby.'
The soldiers wouldn't have taken them in without some kind of trade, given the food shortage.
Maybe they had a good amount of food.
Safety in exchange for their supplies.
'How should I deal with them later…'
They're not my concern.
But if they're with that group, they'll get caught up in my revenge eventually.
'Whatever happens to them is on them.'
In this cruel world, only my survival matters.
If they get fucked over by being part of that group, that's their problem.
'…But where are Ryu Da-hee and Han Mo-a?'
The only two who were somewhat decent to me in that group.
I wanted to bring them into my fold somehow.
Even though helping Han Mo-a led to my downfall, they were the only ones who sided with me and helped in secret.
-Flap!
I took off from the branch, circling the dorm's airspace to look around.
Then I spotted some people gathered in the backyard of the dorm.
'That bastard Seo Il-soo…'
There was Sergeant Seo Il-soo, a few soldiers, and Ryu Da-hee shielding Han Mo-a behind her.
I knew what was up.
They've been eyeing Han Mo-a for a while now.
Today must be the day they decided to make their move.
I dove down towards them.
-Whoosh!
I flapped my wings hard, pecking at the shitty soldiers.
"What the fuck! Ow, fuck! Get away!"
"Sergeant! Is that pigeon a zombie?"
"What?!"
Even without visible zombie-like wounds, my aggressive behavior and odd movements for a pigeon tipped them off.
"Aaagh━!!"
"Are you infected?!"
"Shut the fuck up! Where's that professor?!"
Panic set in, with Seo Il-soo turning pale, yelling as he ran back into the building.
'Assholes, enjoy your panic.'
They'll be shitting themselves over possible infection for a while.
After chasing off the soldiers, I landed on a nearby wall.
"Da-hee…"
"It's okay. It's calm now…"
The two girls, who were the original targets, were now looking at me warily.
'As far as I remember, neither had boyfriends.'
I recalled they were both virgins, likely still are.
I needed their virgin blood and my semen to enhance my powers through my slaves.
'Just wait. I'll come for you soon.'
Looking at Han Mo-a, scared, and Ryu Da-hee, glaring at me, I made up my mind.
Their big, ripe breasts were particularly enticing.
'I'm looking forward to tasting that.'
With the promise of making them my slaves, I took off back into the sky, leaving them behind.
'Phew, let's call it a day for the skill test.'
My first skill, initially disappointing for being just one and seemingly simple, turned out to be extremely useful.
Especially the ability to move freely where humans can't and interact physically.
'I should give it a name later.'
My first zombie pigeon, it felt wrong to just keep calling it a pigeon.
After a successful first use of my skill, I leisurely returned to the department store.
Then.
'…What the fuck is that?'
Something flying below me caught my eye.
Another flying object, like me.
I lowered my altitude to get a closer look.
At first, I thought I was seeing things, but with a pigeon's sharp eyes, there was no mistake.
It was definitely a…
'…Drone.'
A piece of human tech, designed for surveillance and mobility in the sky.
