Chapter 15: Chapter 15: You've been conquered, haven't you?

With this fierceness in her voice, a chill ran through Tanya's spine. While the calmness of her voice shocked her, she simply could not believe this decisive policy and pragmatic tone would come out from her timid student.

Tanya took in a short, sharp breath as realization dawned. Zoe was not just calm; she had accepted her predicament in her own way.

"You've really... been conquered, haven't you?" Tanya said in disbelief, whispering.

"I say let's make it official. Tanya, you will be the first wife; Zoe here will be the second." Luke interrupted before Zoe could respond, grinning.

Zoe flushed crimson and stammered, "Let's... let's not talk about titles now."

Tanya's eyes became narrowing slits, and she crossed her arms. "The first wife? You must be mad!"

Luke shrugged his shoulders and grinned wider. "It's just practical. More women will come in the future, after all. Someone has got to deal with each other, and you, Tanya, are just the right kind of a person for that."

Tanya's face was flushed with fury at his remark, yet a small part of her, the part that was still absorbing her position, felt a reluctant thrill of flattery.

"Enough of this ridiculousness," Tanya snapped, turning back to face the primitive murals. "I haven't finished examining these yet."

Tanya's keen sight went over the finely carved carvings, one more detailed than the last. The murals unfolded what the clan of Demon Wolves had gone through during their early days and how they rose to power under the rule of the Star Wolf.

Zoe sat quietly now on the back of Wolf One; her gaze wandered on the towering stone tablets. "These wolves had a civilization of their own," she whispered while tracing the claw-like engraving.

Luke was listening only halfway. "The first thirty tablets are just history lessons," he murmured, "and it's the last few that are really the important ones."

No sooner had they reached the thirty-second tablet than the story took a turn. The tale of the Star Wolf merged into the greater story-the battle of the Four Spirits.

The murals told of the fierce competition among sixty-four ancient totems for the highly coveted title of The Four Spirits. It showed the Star Wolf standing in the second last carving, with its jaws snapshut round the tail of the mighty Black Tortoise.

"Even the Black Tortoise could not withstand the power of the Star Wolf," Luke said, his voice tinged with disbelief.

Tanya's mouth dropped open in astonishment. "The Star Wolf has vanquished the Black Tortoise?" she murmured, nearly incredulous. "But how?

Luke raised an eyebrow as if considering whether to pay tribute to the truth. He glanced back at her. "It wasn't invincible, though. Look at the next one."

The last mural talked of the Star Wolf's fallen glory. Mortally wounded in the climactic fight against the Azure Dragon, the proud wolf stood defiant under the moonlight, its body battered but unbowed.

"It has fallen," said Tanya, with an imperceptible tremor. "What a great creature...and even that could not took place among The Four Spirits."

The expression on Luke's face darkened as he scanned the carving. "It was not just defeat; it was a message. The Star Wolf was too proud, too hungry for ambition. And it paid for that."

The last of the stone tablets up on the pedestal had an empty surface except for a single rune: that of gargantuan demon wolf attire with four wings, howling beneath the shiny bright moon. The magical black fur scintillated whereas a severed whisker of the Azure Dragon dangled in its mouth.

Tanya gasped. "That's... not the Star Wolf."

Luke nodded, a blank expression on his face. "No. That's the Lone Star Wolf."

Zoe tilted her head, baffled. "Who was that?"

"An enigma," Luke spoke softly. "Arising only after the Star Wolf had fallen, it challenged the Azure Dragon itself. There was no record of what happened-or which side was victorious or even of its disappearance."

The carving fell under Tanya's scrutiny. "To think of a wolf so strong that it could wound a Four Spirit: It's bone-chilling," she uttered.

Luke beamed. "Very chilling, yes. But also, inspiring. That wolf did not bind itself with rules and expectations; it made its own way."

As the group moved away from the murals, Tanya found herself stealing glances at Luke. The evidence was undeniable—he was a descendant of the Star Wolf, a creature tied to an ancient legacy far greater than she had imagined.

"I suppose I can't deny it anymore," she said finally. "You are a totem."

Luke raised an eyebrow. "Took you long enough to admit it."

"But that doesn't mean I'll forgive you," Tanya added sharply.
