Chapter 11: Chapter 11 : Bonds Tested
The forest was still shrouded in darkness when Azhaan awoke, the glow of the crystalline trees casting an eerie light across the clearing. The Shadow Stalker stood watch, its red eyes unblinking as it surveyed the surroundings. The faint sounds of the forest—distant rustling leaves and occasional animal calls—felt too quiet, too calculated, as if the Wild itself was holding its breath.
Azhaan sat up, stretching his sore muscles. The events of the trial still weighed heavily on his mind, but the strange pull of the bond mark on his arm kept his thoughts from lingering too long. There was no time for rest in Aetheris.
Kaela was already awake, sitting by the fire and polishing her blade. Lirian perched on her shoulder, the small dragon's crystalline wings reflecting the firelight. She glanced up as Azhaan moved.
"You're up early," she said.
Azhaan shrugged. "Didn't really sleep."
"Good," Alira said, emerging from the shadows with her plant companion slithering by her feet. "You'll need to be sharp today."
"Sharp for what?" Azhaan asked warily.
"For the next step," Alira replied, her tone almost playful. "Now that the Wild has accepted you, it's time to put that acceptance to the test."
Azhaan frowned. "I thought I already passed the test."
"That was just the beginning," Alira said with a smirk. "You've proven you can fight. Now, you need to prove you can lead."
"Lead?" Azhaan repeated, his confusion growing.
Kaela stood, sheathing her blade. "In Aetheris, tamers don't just fight with their beasts—they work as a team. You're bonded to the Shadow Stalker, but that doesn't mean it'll blindly follow your every command. It's your job to earn its trust, to show it that you're more than just its tamer—you're its partner."
Azhaan glanced at the Shadow Stalker, which was now watching him intently. "I thought we already had a bond."
"You do," Alira said. "But bonds can be shallow. Surface-level. If you want to unlock your true potential, you need to forge something deeper."
Azhaan hesitated. "And how do I do that?"
Alira grinned. "By surviving."
Alira led the group deeper into the Verdantwilds, the air growing heavier with each step. The trees became taller, their crystalline branches intertwining to form a canopy that blocked out the sky. The ground was soft and damp, the smell of earth and moss filling Azhaan's nostrils.
The Shadow Stalker stayed close, its movements silent and fluid. Azhaan couldn't shake the feeling that the beast was studying him, waiting for something.
They finally stopped in a small, enclosed glade. Alira turned to Azhaan, her grin replaced by a more serious expression. "This is where you'll prove yourself," she said.
"Prove myself how?" Azhaan asked cautiously.
Alira gestured to the glade. "This place is home to a species of spirit beast known as Wisp Serpents. They're fast, elusive, and highly intelligent. Your task is to work with your Shadow Stalker to capture one."
Azhaan's stomach sank. "Capture a Wisp Serpent? That's it?"
"That's it," Alira said, crossing her arms.
Kaela stepped forward, her tone softer. "Wisp Serpents are tricky. They're not aggressive, but they'll test your coordination with your beast. If you can capture one, it means you and the Shadow Stalker are truly in sync."
Azhaan glanced at the Shadow Stalker. "Alright," he said, taking a deep breath. "Let's do this."
The glade was quiet as Azhaan moved cautiously through the dense underbrush. The Shadow Stalker crept ahead, its red eyes scanning the shadows for any sign of movement.
Azhaan felt the mark on his arm pulse faintly, a steady rhythm that seemed to sync with the Stalker's movements. He could almost feel its thoughts, its instincts guiding him.
Then, a flicker of light caught his eye.
"Over there," he whispered, pointing toward a cluster of glowing vines.
The Shadow Stalker crouched low, its body blending into the shadows. Azhaan followed its lead, staying as quiet as possible.
Another flicker of light, this time accompanied by a soft hiss. Azhaan's heart raced as he spotted the Wisp Serpent—a slender, snake-like creature with translucent scales that shimmered like moonlight. Its body weaved gracefully through the air, almost as if it were swimming.
"Alright," Azhaan whispered. "We need to corner it. Can you—"
Before he could finish, the Shadow Stalker sprang into action, darting toward the serpent with incredible speed. The Wisp Serpent reacted instantly, twisting its body and vanishing into a nearby patch of vines.
"Wait!" Azhaan called, frustration bubbling in his chest. He ran after the Shadow Stalker, stumbling through the underbrush.
The serpent reappeared, its glowing body weaving through the air like a wisp of smoke. The Shadow Stalker lunged again, but the serpent was too fast, slipping through its claws with ease.
"Stop!" Azhaan shouted.
The Shadow Stalker froze, its glowing eyes snapping to Azhaan. For a moment, they simply stared at each other, the bond between them buzzing with tension.
"We're not going to catch it like this," Azhaan said, his voice calmer now. "We need to work together. You can't just attack blindly."
The Shadow Stalker tilted its head, as if considering his words.
Azhaan glanced at the Wisp Serpent, which was now circling them at a safe distance. He took a deep breath, his mind racing. "Alright. Here's the plan. You drive it toward me, and I'll cut it off. We trap it between us."
The Shadow Stalker let out a low growl, and Azhaan felt a flicker of agreement through the bond.
"Let's do this," he said.
The Shadow Stalker moved with precision this time, darting toward the Wisp Serpent and forcing it to change direction. Azhaan positioned himself carefully, anticipating the serpent's movements.
When the serpent darted toward him, he lunged, his dagger slicing through the air and cutting off its escape route. The Shadow Stalker pounced, its claws pinning the serpent to the ground without harming it.
Azhaan knelt beside the creature, his breathing ragged. The Wisp Serpent let out a soft hiss, its glowing body still.
"We did it," Azhaan said, a smile breaking across his face.
The Shadow Stalker growled softly, and Azhaan felt a wave of approval through their bond.
Back in the glade, Alira and Kaela watched as Azhaan approached with the captured serpent.
"Not bad," Alira said, her grin returning. "Looks like you're starting to figure it out."
Kaela nodded. "You and the Shadow Stalker are finally working as a team. That's progress."
Azhaan set the serpent free, watching as it slithered gracefully back into the forest. He turned to the Shadow Stalker, placing a hand on its dark fur. "Thanks," he said quietly.
The beast let out a low growl, its red eyes glowing softly.
For the first time, Azhaan felt like he was beginning to understand what it truly meant to be a tamer.
