Chapter 29: Chapter 29: Bubu birds
Ava entered the forest with George and Kael, surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature. As she gathered herbs that could be used as spices, she spotted a strange-looking bird. It resembled a dragon chicken but was slightly bigger, with ink-green feathers. Ava remembered that these flightless birds were called bubu birds.
The bubu birds were not considered valuable to the beastmen, as they were not big enough to be considered a worthy hunt. Moreover, getting rid of the feathers was a hassle, and most beastmen ended up eating the feathers with the meat, which gave them an upset stomach. Ava, however, was intrigued by the bubu birds and asked George to catch one for her.
George and Kael were curious about what Ava wanted with these "useless" birds, but they didn't question her. George rushed up to the bubu birds and caught three living birds, one female and two males, as seen from the bright green feathers on their tails. The startled birds, which weren't used to being hunted by beastmen, ran about, making loud clucking noises.
As Ava watched, she discovered the bubu birds' nest, filled with many large eggs with light green color and some dark green specks on the eggshells. With Kael's help, they loaded some of the eggs onto her basket before heading back home.
Once they arrived, George roasted the five bubu birds with Ava's help, and with her direction, he was able to completely remove all the birds' feathers to his amazement. They used hot water, boiled in a clay pot, and submerged the birds in it. Afterward, plucking the feathers was quite easy.
After roasting the chicken and preparing a hot sauce to go with it, Ava noticed something about the meat. The meat of the male chicken was more tasty and had a distinct fragrance, while the female chicken's meat was bland and almost tasteless. However, with the sauce, it was not too terrible. The eggs, on the other hand, were extremely delicious, almost like quail eggs. They were rich and probably very nutritious.
Ava picked up another roasted bird leg and began to chow down. Before she had a chance to savor it completely, one chicken leg had already been devoured. Looking outside, it was clear that the sun had clocked out for the day. The family of three had eaten to their fill, and Ava packed some leftover roasted chicken to share with her friends Oma and Lily.
As they walked towards the center of the tribe, the square was booming with animal noises, and the roars of beastmen were heard from all directions. It was extremely lively, and Ava could tell that the Hunting Team had returned, having caught a lot of prey. At this time, most Orc Families would gather in the square, sharing stories of their hunts and enjoying each other's company.
Ava spotted Oma and Lily welcoming some of their mates who were back from the hunting team. She headed over to greet them, a warm smile on her face. "Oma! Lily!" Ava exclaimed, opening her arms for a hug.
Oma, a sturdy-built Orc with a hearty laugh, enveloped Ava in a bear hug. "Ava! It's been ages! What's that delicious smell you're carrying?" Oma's nose twitched, and her eyes sparkled with curiosity.
Ava chuckled, holding out the basket. "I brought some roasted bubu birds and hot pepper sauce. Want to try some?"
Oma's eyes widened, and she eagerly opened the basket. The aroma of roasted meat wafted out, making everyone's mouth water. Oma, ever the foodie, picked a roasted meat and took a bite. Her eyes brightened, and she exclaimed with surprise, "Delicious!"
Lily, a petite Orc with a mischievous grin, seeing Oma's reaction, immediately picked up a roasted meat and tried one too. Her reaction was the same as Oma's, and they both asked for more.
They also tried the eggs and were delighted. "We never knew eggs could be eaten this way!" Lily exclaimed. "We only ever drink them raw."
Oma and Lily bombarded Ava with questions. "Ava, how did you manage to completely remove the feathers? That's the hardest and most annoying thing about the bubu birds!" Oma asked.
Ava smiled, happy to share her experience. "I used hot water to defeather the birds. It was surprisingly easy. And I discovered that the meat of the male birds is more flavorful than the females."
Lily's eyes widened. "Really? We never knew that!"
Oma nodded, taking another bite of the roasted meat. "This is incredible. You're a genius, Ava!"
As they discussed, clever males and sharp females were already eavesdropping, everyone wanting to try out the latest food that was invented by Ava. The news of the delicious bubu birds and eggs spread quickly, and soon, a crowd gathered around Ava, Oma, and Lily, all eager to try out the new culinary delight or at least get the recipe.
Emily stormed into the gathering, her face twisted in a scowl. "What's all the fuss about?" she demanded, her eyes scanning the crowd until they landed on Ava.
"There's nothing special about this meat," Emily sneered, her gaze falling on the roasted bubu birds. "Bird meat is dangerous to eat. You're all foolish for even considering it."
Ava's eyes narrowed, her patience wearing thin. "That's not true, Emily," she corrected calmly. "Bird meat is only dangerous if you eat it with the feathers. The body can't digest feathers. Eating feathers is like eating fur – who wouldn't fall sick if they ate fur?"
The people gathered around nodded their heads in affirmation, and Emily's scowl deepened.
"You're all fools!" Emily spat, her anger boiling over. She kicked the basket containing the food, sending roasted bubu birds and eggs scattering across the ground.
"Ava's trying to wipe out our clan!" Emily falsely accused, her voice rising to a hysterical pitch. "She's tricking us into eating poison bubu birds! Even if we don't die, we'll be too sick to fight against any threats that befall our tribe!"
The crowd began to murmur, some of them looking uncertain, and Emily pressed her advantage.
"Ava should be kicked out of our tribe!" Emily shouted. "She's done nothing but bring trouble and danger to our doorstep! She's been mated to two beastmen and hasn't even conceived yet – what use is she to our tribe?"
Ava's face remained calm, but her eyes flashed with anger. She knew that Emily was trying to manipulate the tribe, to turn them against her. But Ava was not one to back down from a challenge. She stood tall, her shoulders squared, ready to face whatever accusations Emily threw her way but then George and Kael stepped forward, their faces dark with anger. "That's enough, Emily," George growled. "Ava has done nothing but help our tribe. She's brought new ideas and skills, and she's helped us to survive."
Kael nodded in agreement. "And as for conceiving, that's not something you can force," he said. "Ava is a valuable member of this tribe, and we won't let you drive her out with your lies and accusations."
The crowd began to murmur, some of them looking at Emily with suspicion. Ava's friends, Oma and Lily, stepped forward, their faces set in determined lines.
"We stand with Ava," Oma said. "She's our friend, and we trust her."
Lily nodded. "And we've eaten the bubu birds, and we're fine," she added. "Emily's just trying to cause trouble."
Emily's face turned red with rage, but she seemed to realize that she was losing the argument. She spun on her heel and stormed off, leaving the crowd to disperse and discuss the events that had just transpired.
Ava watched her go, a mixture of emotions swirling in her chest. She was angry at Emily's accusations, but she was also grateful for the support of her friends and mates.
As the crowd dispersed, George and Kael turned to Ava, their faces soft with concern.
"Are you okay?" George asked, his voice low and gentle.
Ava nodded, feeling a sense of relief wash over her. "I'm fine," she said. "Thanks for standing up for me."
Oma replied "we just said what was true" while Lily nodded in affirmation.
Kael smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "We'll always stand up for you, Ava," he said. "You're our mate, and we love you."
Ava's heart swelled with emotion, and she leaned forward, kissing both George and Kael on the cheek.
"I love you too," she said, feeling grateful for their love and support.
