Chapter 5: Doomed Battle
Sezel offered a terrified gaze onto the Night Crawler advancing like a harbinger of death, its maw wide open, revealing jagged fangs capable of chewing even steel. The creature initially walked on two legs like a human, but later it dropped to all four legs like a predator.
'Damn it, i need to do something.' his gaze darting frantically around looking for something, anything will do at this point. From earlier stone incident it was clear that if he would throw a stone near the beast it would get distracted.
But the question was why? it had such terrifying red eyes yet they all moved towards the sound of the direction, a distraction he could exploit. "Are they blind?" he wondered, though the untested theory was too fragile to stake his life upon.
While Arty slowly walked backwards with his sword leveled at the beast, the creature was pushing him relentlessly, it was hungry and the punk had hit him in the neck.
Rilli stood petrified against a gnarled tree, her tear-streaked face a mess, hands muffling her stifled sobs.
The leader somehow out of sheer luck had gotten out of the ensnarement and climbed up the tree, which seemed to be effective as the creatures struggled to climb, a fleeting refugee, because the tree would soon fall under due to the Night Crawlers' relentless gauging at the bark with their sharp claws.
On the other hand, Sezel was fighting the primal fear that was taking over him slowly as the beast neared him, he could now feel its hot rusty breath and it made him want to puke.
'Doesn't this thing brush?' he thought as if he had the privilege to do it.
The beast now loomed over him, the sticky saliva and blood mixed licked fell on his cloths staining them, but Sezel noticed something was different and suddenly he felt a burning sensation through his cloths where the liquid fell as if kissed by acid.
Shock widened his eyes as he saw his clothes had burned. 'What did this thing has in it's mouth?' he gritted his teeth and looked up again, the beast getting ready to bite his head off. It raised its mouth up, widening the maw and then lunged.
With a desperate twisting motion, Sezel rolled aside. The creature's maw smashing into the tree behind him. His heart thundered, teetering on the edge of collapse, but survival demanded action.
He immediately kicked the creature in the stomach, he was not hoping for the creature to go skidding backwards, that was impossible with his frail body but he did get the results he desired. As a result his own body propelled backwards, skidding on the surface, he abruptly halted and scrambled on to his legs running immediately.
Clutching his left hand he darted to the bag, and stopped right at is site, opening the bag he took out anything he grabbed at.
A pickaxe, 'Such a great thing to fight with one hand, right.' he cursed his luck, but this was better than nothing at all.
Glancing back, the beast should be coming for him but it had shifted its pursuit, now stalking Rilli from behind, its hunger drawn to the nearest prey.
Without hesitation, Sezel charged with the pickaxe in his hand, other mangled arm flailing like a broken branch, he gulped hard suppressing his pain.
In a fleeting glance, he glimpsed five Night Crawlers huddled in a cluster, blood pooling beneath them. At first he didn't pay it any heed.
But, dread coiled as he realized that they were feasting on one of his group members, from the location he deduced that the one who died must be Beardy. 'But what did it matter', a shameful relief flickered within, though he loathed himself for being so shameless.
The creature behind Rilli pressed its rear two legs in the motion to jump. There was still significant distance between him and and the beast, the pickaxe he was holding slowing his down. Sezel closed his eyes tight, accelerating as fast as he could to a level where he would fall with just one wrong step.
The beast lunged, opening its maw at Rilli, the beast just above her it's cruel attack aimed directly at her head.
There was no chance he would reach in time, so instead Sezel Channeled his sprint's momentum, he hurled the pickaxe with all his might, aiming for the creature's flank.
THUD!!
The pickaxe hit the beast right in the stomach, the weight and force of the throw adding up, sent the creature tumbling down on ground. miraculously it even pierced the sturdy skin making the creature roar in pain.
Rilli, staggering back, collapsed as the beast's attack faltered.
Sezel went scrambling on the ground after the throw, and clashing with another one of the Night Crawler coming to halt at impact with its body. His pulse erratic, lungs gasping for air as nausea threatened to overwhelm him.
