Chapter 68: The King of Omashu: part 2
POV 3rd person
"What is your judgment sire?" A guard asked.
Staring at the three criminals with an unconcerned gaze Bumi announced "Throw them. A feast"
The guards though confused quickly led the three criminals to the dining hall seating them opposite the king. A feast was quickly prepared and laid out on the table.
Being the crazy king that he his Bumi stood behind the three saying "My people have grown fat from too many feasts so I hope you like your chicken with no skin"
"Thanks, but I don't eat meat," Aang replied.
Turning to look at Sokka, Bumi said "How about you, I bet you like meat" shoving a drumstick into Sokka's mouth.
While the king walked to his own seat Katara turned to Aang saying "Is it just me or is this guy's crown a little crooked?"
Finally sitting on his own seat King Bumi asked "Tell me young bald one, where are you from"
"I'm from Kangaroo island" Aang said, bringing up his previous answer at the gate.
"Kangaroo Island eh. I hear that place is really hopping" Bumi replied with a pun.
While mostly everyone stayed quiet at the obvious pun, Sokka was laughing at the similar sense of humor.
"What it was funny," he said, replying to Katara's annoyed gaze.
Stretching his arms Bumi said "All these good jokes are making me tired, I guess it's time to hit the hay" then suddenly threw a drumstick at Aang.
Acting on pure instinct Aang caught the drumstick with airbending much to the horror of his friends. Quickly dropping it, Aang looked at the king nervously.
"What do you have to say for yourself?" Bumi said.
Standing up with his friends Aang said "You got me, i'm the avatar just doing my avatar thing. So we will be…" all the while backing out of the room but the guards blocked the entrance.
Standing up Bumi said "Take them to the refurbished chamber that used to be bad"
Leading the gang through the hallways the guards approached the mentioned chamber quickly opening it with earthbending and closing it behind the three.
"What now?" Sokka said.
"There doesn't seem to be a way out, we should get some rest" Katara mentioned.
"Agreed," Aang said.
Laying down on the provided beds the three kids quickly fell asleep, despite the unfamiliar place the excitement and stress of the day had taken its toll. A few hours went by and when AAng awoke he was alone in the room Katara and Sokka nowhere to be seen as well as a guard standing in the open doorway.
"Where are my friends?" Aang asked with concern.
"The king will free them if you complete your challenges" the guard said.
"And if I fail?" Aang asked.
"He didn't say, your staff please" the guard replied.
Handing over his staff, Aang followed the guard out of the room and down the complex series of hallways and doors until entering the throne room.
"Aang welcome, now" Bumi paused "what do you think of my clothes"
"I guess it's fine," Aang said, scratching his head.
"Excellent you passed the first test" Bumi replied.
"Really?" Aang said surprised.
"Well, not one of the deadly tests, the real challenges are much more challenging, And before you refuse take look at this"
The wall opened up to reveal Katara and Sokka being held by a few guards, both had a crystal ring put onto their finger.
"Those delightful rings are made of pure genemite also known as creeping crystal. By nightfall your friends will be completely covered in it"
"I'll do what you want"
Bumi led Aang and his companions through the twisting hallways then down some stairs till they came upon a cave full of stalactites. Sharp rocks jutted out of the ground from both the ceiling and the floor, the largest one in the center was being bombarded with water from above.
"Oh I seem to have lost the key to my lunchbox, would you mind getting it for me?" Bumi said gesturing to the key hanging over the largest stalactite.
"Wait here," Aang said.
Jumping into the area Aang started hopping from one spike to another quickly getting close to the key. Finally reaching near it he jumped directly at it but was bombarded with water throwing him away.
Falling Aang pushed out both legs landing in between two spikes in an almost split like position, a third spike was dangerously close to his crotch. Letting out a breath of air Aang jumped back over building up speed, then jumped in towards the bottom attempting to swim up the water.
"Swimming, no one has tried that before," Bumi commented.
Aang was launched from the water, catching himself on another spike. Then he got an idea, jumping up towards the ceiling Aang broke off one of the spikes then used his airbending to hit the key catching it and impaling it right above Bumi's head.
"There I did your stupid test, now let my friends go" Aang yelled.
"Not yet young avatar, there are still two more tests to go," Bumi replied.
Leading Aang back through the palace they soon entered a room, the walls were covered in different weapons and items most of them just for decoration. The floor was empty except a lone metal tablet sitting in the center like it had fallen off the nearby display.
"My old back doesn't let me pick up heavy things anymore, would you help me and put the tablet back on its display" Bumi said.
"That's it, just put it back?" Aang asked.
Shaking his head in affirmation, Bumi gestured for Aang to step forward. Walking forward Aang kept his eyes out for any traps or other things that could cause harm, which was hard in a room full of weapons. Approaching the tablet Aang bent down to pick it up curling his fingers around to lift it. What Aang didn't know though was that this tablet was made from metal, from the tower, and not just any metal, a metal heavy enough to make it unsuitable for weapons.
"Why is this so heavy?" Aang said, heaving as he tried to pick up the tablet.
"I would Hurry Aang, your friends seem to be in a bit of trouble," Bumi called out.
Looking back Aang spotted the crystals growing on both Sokka and Katara almost reaching their necks at this point. Trying one again Aang tried to lift the tablet but at most he only got it a few centimeters into the air. Then he tried arbending it up but the thing wouldn't move at all, no matter what Aang tried he wasn't moving the tablet at all. Finally he actually inspected the display, finally understanding the challenge.
"There you go," Aang said with a smile as he gestured to the tablet on the floor.
"But you haven't moved it" Bumi said inquisitively.
"And that's exactly what you want, I don't know why this thing is so heavy but that wooden display couldn't hold it. It would just break" Aang explained.
Clapping his hand Bumi congratulated Aang saying "Well done Avatar you have completed my second test. Now let's go onto the third"
Once again Aang followed Bumi through the complex maze of passages and eventually came out onto a balcony overlooking a large underground dirt field.
Turning to Bumi Aang said "Bring it on, what is the next test"
"The next test is that you must choose, which one of these three men do you want to fight," Bumi said, gesturing behind him.
Standing behind Bumi were three men, two who had scary looks and held a multitude of weapons that they could use. The third thought caught Aang's eye, a thin man with spectacle and a more scholarly robe on.
"I chose him," Aang said, pointing to the thin man.
Using earthbending Bumi launched Aang into the arena and the thin man jumped in after him.
"Wrong choice" Bumi announced.
"Mage bolt!" the thin man yelled.
A blue sphere of energy rocketed out of his hand towards Aang, surprised Aang only dodged at the last second barley crouching under it. Standing back up Aang didn't get a second to spare before he had to jump over another one.
"Here you go Avatar," Bumi said, throwing Aang his staff.
Jumping high Aang caught his staff and used airbending to launch himself at the thin man. As soon as he swung his staff at him though a blue transparent shield formed blocking the strike.
"Firebolt" the man yelled.
Sensing danger Aang mustered all of the air he could barely deflect the giant fireball that came at his face.
"A Firebender!" Sokka yelled "Aang kick his butt"
Face set in determination Ran at the supposed firebender but before he could get close the man yelled out something less.
"Spark"
A localized but powerful explosion erupted in front of the man sending Aang sliding back across the ground the edges of his clothes singed.
"Looks like your friends don't have much longer," Bumi yelled.
Hearing that Aang stood up, he started snipping it, collecting air as he did so making a large funnel. Finally after a few moments Aang brought the staff sown slamming it into the ground. A large force of wind shot out knocking his opponent into a wall forcing them unconscious.
Jumping back onto the balcony Aang yelled "There I beat him, now free my friends"
"Ah you have beaten him but you still have one more test" Bumi replied.
"No more tests, no more challenges, I want my friends," Aang yelled.
"Well it's more of a question than a challenge," Bumi said, ignoring Aang.
"Just ask it," Aang said, losing his patience.
"What is my name" Bumi said with a smile "I will be waiting for your answer"
Bumi left with his guards leaving all three companions standing there all trying to think what his name could be.
"Well he is an earthbender so how about Rocky" Sokka suggested.
"Well keep that as a backup Sokka but I don't think so" Katara said "Think about the challenges, there has to be some clues. First you got a key, then you picked up a tablet, then you fought a firebender".
"That's the thing though none of the challenges have anything in common, it was random there was nothing connecting them" Aang said then got an epiphany "Wait, I know his name" he finished getting strange looks from his two friends.

If you are wondering how Aang beat the guy so quickly remember this despite his age Aang is a master bender able to make entire tornados. Second, he was losing his patience and third he was most likely underestimated.
