Chapter 17: Chapter 17
I didn't have to wait long. A few kilometers from Omashu, just as I was about to take a break, an old man came out to meet us. That would have been fine, but there had been no one there ten minutes ago. And he was not an old man, for his blood moved like that of a young man.
When we arrived at the same place, things started to happen. A light kick from the old man's foot and the ground tried to move away. But I was ready, and at the time of his kick, the ground strengthened beneath me. The momentum was strong, but I managed to hold on and not lose my balance. A moment later, the earth mages came at us from all sides, pushing us away from the old man. Why couldn't they live in peace?
I would have lived in some kind of quiet city and not known grief, but no, everyone needs problems and it is with my participation. But now is not the time to fly in dreams.
There were no conversations, and only experience helped me to withstand all the attacks, and the experience of mentoring, when I alone had five fighters. And this experience helped me not only to successfully dodge and block all the blows, but also to attack in rare cases.
I have a lot of strength, so I could fight like this for twenty-four hours, but I have a hard time mentally controlling my impulses for that long, and since I'm also concentrating hard and protecting Poppy, it's not going to be fun and easy for me anytime soon. I have to do something, but since I'm not alone right now, I can't do much. And unfortunately, our opponents have a characteristic shape, so it was not difficult to recognize them as Dai Li fighters.
So what should we do? But I didn't have to think of anything. The longer the fight went on, the more I got used to it and the easier it was for me to interrupt attacks before they appeared. And somewhere after half an hour, when my brain was boiling from the exertion, I managed to kill the first opponent. That moment was the turning point.
I put the first enemy underground, leaving him some oxygen, and the second followed his fate. I had to take out half of their fighters before they realized they were out of luck. So they tried to escape. At the same time, I switched from defense to offense, and the situation changed to the diametrically opposite.
Now they were defending with the whole crowd against me alone, and it was obviously more difficult for them. This was confirmed in the first few minutes when I freaked out and rushed at them in close combat, creating a huge cloud of dust. I just wanted to smash them.
That's what I had to prove them that I'm a predator not a prey. For a full minute, I used my seismic vision to knock them all out in the most painful way possible, and only at the end did the only one who was conscious manage to clear the dust, but it was too late. As a result, twenty-six people were piled up, and only one of them was conscious.
«Shall we talk?» I asked him in a calm voice. This fight had taken a lot of mental and physical energy from me, so I was not in the best of moods. I was met with silence. «Well, you asked for it. Poppy, you go home and I'll catch up with you later. You don't need to see this.»
Her face turned pale and she stepped forward. And I had a lot of not-so-pleasant work ahead of me.
