Ascension Protocol: Rise Beyond Limits

Chapter 61: Echoes of the Fractured Core

The pulse of the hidden realm throbbed with ethereal energy.

Kai stood at the edge of the floating platform, his gaze fixed upon the vast void stretching before him. Shards of what appeared to be fractured realms drifted silently in the darkness — glowing fragments of entire civilizations lost to time. His System interface blinked.

[Main Quest: Shattered Legacy]

Objective: Find and reactivate the Fractured Core (0/1)

Warning: The Core is unstable. Expect unpredictable temporal anomalies.

Beside him, Nyra floated in her radiant form, her wings folding in as she scanned the surroundings.

"We're not just in another layer of the Tower," she murmured. "This is something far older. A place the System itself sealed off."

Kai turned to her, tightening the grip on his new weapon — a blade forged from phase-essence, recently unlocked through the Void Trial. "Why is the System afraid of this place?"

Nyra hesitated. "Because this... this is the birthplace of rogue Protocols. Where systems rebelled."

They stepped forward, and instantly, the gravity twisted. The air shimmered. Before their eyes, time fractured — Kai saw versions of himself flicker in and out of reality: one with glowing armor, one fallen in battle, another in chains.

[Temporal Anomaly Detected]

Stabilizing Personal Timeline... Success.

Caution: Prolonged exposure may result in fragmentation.

A bridge of light stretched between platforms, each radiating a different elemental signature. Fire. Ice. Shadow. Arcane. Life. Death.

"Which one holds the Core?" Kai asked.

Nyra pointed to the platform glowing with a dim, reddish hue — a mixture of decay and raw, chaotic code. "There. But it's not just the Core. Something else is feeding off it."

They stepped onto the bridge.

With each step, the memories of the past assaulted Kai's mind. His childhood in the slums. His sister's scream when the gang dragged her away. The betrayal of his first guild. His own hands — stained with the blood of someone he once called friend.

He clenched his jaw. The System had warned him: To ascend is to carry your burdens upward. But he hadn't expected them to claw at him like ghosts.

[Mental Integrity: 78%]

Status: Stable

Halfway across the bridge, a tremor rippled beneath them. A surge of black energy tore through the void and coalesced into a beast — towering, hunched, its limbs malformed and glitching.

[ERROR ENTITY: Obsidian Wraith]

Level: ???

Threat Level: Extreme

Description: Former Ascendant corrupted by recursive timeline collapse.

The Wraith spoke, its voice layered with echoes from multiple realities.

"You walk into your end, System-born. The Core does not belong to order. It belongs to memory… and memory forgets mercy."

Without hesitation, Kai activated his Phase-Blade. It hummed with compressed time-energy. "We'll see about that."

Nyra spread her wings, casting a radiant shield. "I'll suppress the instability. Strike now, before it shifts dimensions!"

The battle erupted.

Kai darted forward, accelerating with Chrono Surge, a skill he'd unlocked two chapters ago in the Temporal Nexus. Each swing of his blade disrupted reality — leaving behind afterimages that exploded moments later. But the Wraith was not bound by linearity.

Its attacks bent time. Claws that struck from the past. Screeches that aged skin. With every blow, Kai saw versions of his own death.

But he refused to fall.

[Ability Unlocked: Temporal Defiance]

Description: When facing timeline-based threats, user gains immunity to past-state manipulations for 6 seconds. Cooldown: 90 seconds.**

With a roar, Kai invoked it. For six glorious seconds, the Wraith's tricks failed.

He slashed through its core, cleaving corrupted memories and drawing out fragments of truth: A face… once human. A voice… once kind.

Memory Fragment Acquired: "Lira, don't forget me..."

The beast collapsed into data shards.

Breathing heavily, Kai turned to Nyra, who was already stabilizing the platform.

The Core pulsed before them — a crystal-like construct, cracked, flickering between different timelines. Around it floated pieces of identities: names, skills, items — unclaimed remnants of fallen Ascendants.

[Do you wish to reactivate the Fractured Core?]

Warning: Doing so may rewrite system hierarchies.

Kai hesitated.

"Do it," Nyra urged. "This could restore access to ancient protocols — the ones that the System deemed 'too dangerous.'"

He touched it.

Pain lanced through him. The Core poured its data into his neural link — memories of gods, AI wars, entire layers of reality rising and falling. His consciousness expanded.

[Core Assimilation: 12%... 35%... 70%...]

[New System Branch Unlocked: Forgotten Protocols]

Suddenly, a vision.

Kai stood at the apex of a different Tower — one that bled stars. Around him, a legion of beings knelt. Not warriors. Not slaves.

Followers.

He blinked. The vision faded.

Nyra caught him as he staggered. "What did you see?"

"A future," Kai whispered. "Or maybe… a warning."

[Fractured Core Reactivated]

System Update: Legacy Paths Detected. Unlocking deeper Ascension Trees.

The entire void trembled.

A portal opened before them — ancient, covered in runes not seen since Chapter 9 when Kai briefly encountered the Archivist.

"We're not done," Kai said, stepping forward. "This was just the lock. The door... is next."

And with that, they walked into the unknown — toward an arc yet unwritten, in a world beyond even the System's grasp.
