Chapter 7: The King's Decree, The Garden's Terror
The moment Sung Jin-woo released his hold, the laws of physics rushed back into the ruined ramen shop. The Knight Captain stumbled back, gasping for air he hadn't realized he was denied. Delta fell to one knee, her body suddenly feeling impossibly heavy, her feral instincts screaming at her that she had just been in the presence of an apex predator so far above her she was no longer even prey; she was scenery.
But the fight was gone. The aggression had been utterly and completely extinguished, replaced by a singular, unifying emotion: awe-struck terror.
All eyes were on the figure at the entrance. The being they now knew as "The Monarch." He had not moved, he had not fought, he had not even raised his voice. He had simply spoken a word, and the world had obeyed. It was not magic as they knew it. It was not swordsmanship. It was a fundamental command issued to reality itself.
Alpha, the brilliant strategist of Shadow Garden, felt a cold sweat trickle down her spine. Her mind, which processed a thousand possibilities per second, was stuck in a feedback loop of sheer impossibility.
She had felt power before. She had stood before her master, Lord Shadow, and basked in his bottomless, oceanic aura. That was the power of a god hiding his nature. This... this was different. This was the power of a king who had no need to hide. His authority was his nature. He didn't just possess power; he was power.
He stopped us all, she thought, her knuckles white where she gripped her sword. He stopped Delta's charge, my interception, the knights, the cultists... everything. With a word. He wrapped a shadow around my throat and I couldn't even struggle. It felt... like it wasn't just holding me. It was judging me. My life was weighed, measured, and found wanting.
Her eyes flickered to her master, Cid, who was still playing the part of the terrified but brave student, standing protectively in front of them all.
Her previous theory—that this Monarch was a "challenger" summoned by Lord Shadow—shattered and re-formed into something far more terrifying and grandiose.
This isn't a test subject, she realized with dawning, horrified reverence. This is a Rival King. A being of equal standing to Lord Shadow, from another world entirely. The Fracture wasn't a random attack; it was the collision of their two domains! The cosmos is forcing the two greatest shadows to meet. Lord Shadow knew this. He always knew. His casual demeanor, his 'mob' persona... it's all to lull this Monarch into a false sense of security while he observes him. Our master's plan is on a scale we never even dreamed of!
Beta, the chronicler, was having a similar, if more literary, revelation. Her pen was shaking in her hand.
'Chapter 12: The Decree of the Ashen King,' she wrote in her mind, her heart pounding with narrative fervor. 'In the midst of the chaotic dance of blades, a new sovereign appeared. With a single word, "Silence," he brought the world to its knees. He was the embodiment of the final page, the silent king of a dead kingdom. And yet... even this being of absolute finality was held at bay by the quiet, unassuming courage of Lord Shadow in his guise as a simple boy. Oh, the drama! The tension! The clash of two supreme beings, one overt and one covert!'
Sung Jin-woo ignored their internal monologues. He had their attention. He had demonstrated a fraction of his power, just enough to establish his position.
"My negotiations are with him," Jin-woo stated, his gaze fixed on Cid. "The rest of you will withdraw. Now."
The Knight Captain, his bravado completely shattered, looked from the terrifying Monarch to the still-cowering boy. He was utterly lost. His orders were to apprehend the boy, but a primal part of his brain told him that taking another step forward would be the last thing he ever did.
"But... he is a person of interest in the kingdom's..." the Captain began to stammer, driven by duty.
Jin-woo's head tilted slightly. "Was that a refusal?"
The shadows in the room deepened. From the floor, the distinct, menacing silhouette of an armored head with a crimson plume began to rise. A knight of immense, chilling pressure. Igris was beginning to manifest.
The Captain's blood ran cold. "N-no! No refusal! We will... secure the perimeter! Yes, secure the perimeter!" He practically screamed the order, and his knights, grateful for any excuse to leave the Monarch's immediate presence, scrambled out of the ruined shop, their retreat far less organized than their charge.
The cultists, being fanatics but not suicidal, simply vanished back into the shadows they came from, melting away without a word.
Now, only Shadow Garden, Cid, and Jin-woo remained.
Alpha stepped forward, sheathing her sword in a single, fluid motion. She bowed her head, a gesture of profound respect. It was not a bow of submission, but one noble acknowledging another.
"Monarch," she said, her voice clear and steady despite the fear she still felt. "We are the Shadow Garden. We serve the will of the shadows. We see now that you are a... significant piece on the board. We will withdraw and observe."
She was speaking to Jin-woo, but her words were also for her master's ears. She was signaling to him that she understood the new, grander game.
"However," Alpha added, her golden eyes lifting to meet Jin-woo's purple glow. "The one you negotiate with... is under our protection. Any harm that befalls him will be considered an act of war against our entire organization. Know this."
It was a bold, almost suicidal statement to make, but it had to be said. She had to show the Monarch that even if he was a king, their master had loyal, powerful retainers who would die for him.
Jin-woo regarded her for a long moment. He felt her resolve, her absolute loyalty. It was a loyalty he understood and respected. It was the same loyalty his own shadows had for him. He gave a slight nod. The half-materialized form of Igris sank back into the floor.
"Your loyalty is admirable," he said. It was the highest praise he could offer.
Alpha bowed again. "Delta. Beta. All of you. Let's go."
Delta shot one last look at Jin-woo, a look of pure, terrified awe, before turning and leaping out of the hole in the wall. The other shades followed, melting away as silently as they had arrived, leaving Cid alone with the Monarch.
The ramen shop was finally, truly, quiet.
Cid, who had watched the entire exchange with internal glee, slowly straightened up. The immediate danger was over. His plan to act as the catalyst had worked perfectly.
'Phew, that was intense!' he thought. 'They all left. Just as I predicted. The Monarch demonstrated his power to clear the board of rabble, and Alpha gave a cool, respectable threat to show that Shadow Garden is not to be trifled with. Now the two great powers can negotiate in peace. Time to get back into character.'
He looked at Jin-woo, his face still a mask of confusion. "They... they're all gone. What... what just happened?"
Jin-woo let out a breath he didn't realize he'd been holding. The sheer mental fortitude it took to maintain this "clueless" persona in the face of such events was, in its own way, a power greater than any magic he had ever seen.
"They left because I told them to," Jin-woo said, his voice flat with exhaustion. He stepped fully into the room, the shadows receding from his face just enough to reveal a sharp, handsome, but incredibly tired expression. "Now. You and I are going to talk. And you are going to give me straight answers. No more riddles. No more games."
He pulled up a surprisingly intact stool, sat down at the ruined ramen counter opposite Cid, and waited. The Monarch of Shadows was ready for a proper conversation, even if it was with the universe's greatest actor.
