Apocalyptic World: Surviving with my husband and my cute little babies

Chapter 251: Reminiscing on the past

After settling the infants on the portable beds inside the space, the others quickly busied themselves, gently changing the babies' clothes one by one.

All the while, they couldn't hide their quiet curiosity, their eyes occasionally drifting toward Elena, silently wondering about her intentions for the infants.

Sensing their unspoken questions, Elena chuckled softly and said.

"They are too young. Although I prefer to mind our own business, but since we've adopted them and have the means to do so, let's give them our full support. Once they stabilize, I'll let the Paradise Homes kids take care of them again."

Hearing this, everyone nodded in understanding and quickly discussed a plan to rotate shifts for looking after the infants.

In the meantime, the elders would handle the care, as the Paradise Shop still needed the others' attention—a decision Elena readily agreed to.

Soon, they fed the babies with warm milk powder, earning soft coos and contented smiles before the little ones finally drifted into a peaceful sleep.

"It's so hot outside. Orphaned kids like these, if not cared for, would definitely…" Grandma Ford's voice trailed off as she watched the infants sleeping soundly, the calming environment of the space keeping them comfortable.

"Alright, let's not dwell on negative thoughts," Grandpa Ford interrupted gently. "We can't save everyone, but we'll do what we can handle."

Everyone understood and sighed quietly, each contemplating the cruel fate of children born into this apocalypse.

But soon, they brushed those heavy thoughts aside, choosing to focus only on what they could do to help.

A faint warmth returned to their faces as they smiled down at the peacefully sleeping babies.

Elena and Ethan then excused themselves from the elders, deciding to check the situation outside.

The moment they stepped out, a wave of scorching heat hit them. The sun had climbed higher, its rays more intense than before.

Elena narrowed her eyes, realizing that this time, the extreme heat had arrived much earlier and spiked far more suddenly.

Unlike in her past life, when the temperature had risen gradually, giving residents some time to adjust and prepare.

Seeing his wife's unease, Ethan gently comforted her.

"Wife, we are prepared. So relax and don't stress too much. We'll make it through."

"I know," Elena murmured, her voice soft yet heavy. "It's just… I feel complicated, reliving this disaster."

She let out a weary sigh. If given a choice, she would rather face the bitter cold than endure this heat.

At least cold could be fought off with thick clothes, warm fires, and soft blankets.

In her past life, when the extreme heat struck, food quickly became scarce.

For a while, she had eaten well thanks to Caldwell's connections in Military District D.

But that comfort didn't last.

The relentless heat spoiled food in mere days, forcing the military to develop crude methods to preserve their dwindling supplies.

Another sigh escaped her lips, but this time, a faint smile followed.

'This life is different.'

Now, they had a space filled with an endless source of fresh supplies, and that alone made all the difference in facing the coming disasters.

Her mind then drifted to City D's military sector.

'Will they act the same as they did in my past life? '

She then remembered that the Heather family was already stationed in City D this time. With their presence, they might already be prepared.

In her past life, she had only crossed paths with the Heather clan after they relocated to City A from City G.

Now, seeing how they were already attempting to align themselves with the military in City D during its early stages, it was clear—they were aware of the looming disaster, and they wanted control over the forces in Military District D.

'Did the Heavens warn them, or did they sacrifice one of their elders' body and soul to glimpse the future using their insight ability?'

Elena knew much about the Heather family because, in her past life, she had once captured one of their elders, which allowed her to extract free information about their clan.

Back from the present, she gazed at the bright windows, fully engrossed in memories of her past life, reflecting on how vastly different this life had become.

Her memories could still serve as a guide, but she could no longer rely on them completely—too many events were shifting in unpredictable ways.

But the fact remained—the Heather family with Military D would inevitably relocate to a military base here once the tsunami struck City D.

She needed to be ready for them, making sure the higher-ups in Military A survived.

If not, power could easily shift into the hands of the Heather family, just like in her past life.

Especially Trexie… with her supposed space ability that could produce goods, survival might be within their grasp.

Elena was unaware of one truth: Trexie never had any space ability.

The so-called space ability Trexie flaunted in her past life actually came from the artifact found in Willow Village.

But in this lifetime, it was never found, as it had already bonded with Elena at the moment of her death in that past life, making her its one and only master.

'Speaking of that woman… where could she be?'

The last time they had seen Trexie was at the mall.

In the months that followed, she hadn't shown up again—only Troy remained in the Camel Tower area.

'Has she already gone back to City D's military?'

There were many questions Elena wanted to find answers to, but she set them aside for now.

Right now, her priority was the disaster unfolding before them.

Noticing his wife lost in thought again, Ethan leaned in and placed a gentle kiss on her forehead, hoping to pull her back to the present.

"What are you thinking about?"

"Nothing much," she replied with a faint smile. "Just wishing I could fast-forward time and skip this whole extreme heat phase."

"Oh? Can you do that?" Ethan asked, half-teasing, half-curious, remembering her time ability.

Elena quickly caught on and shook her head. "Of course not. I'm not god. And we can't mess with time so recklessly."

Her tone turned serious as she looked at him. Then, she began to explain the true extent of her ability.

"I can send my consciousness back in time, but it's not as simple as it sounds. It comes with a heavy price—each use drains all the energy from my core, leaving me weak and bedridden for weeks. It even chips away at my life force."

She paused, her expression solemn. "We only ever used it in my past life when we were on the verge of defeat."

She sighed once again, remembering some of the battles they had lost but managed to rewind, allowing events to repeat according to their victory.
