He knew that no matter which era or situation, gold was a universal currency. He could keep those even if their value decreased; it wouldn't be completely useless.

Thinking about this, he got to work immediately and started making calls. By the time the apocalypse started, he already had several boxes of gold bars.

She didn't want to have to fight with people who wanted to rob her or give them a chance to kidnap her grandfather morally just because he was a general of the country.
