Chapter 19: Chapter 19: Dismissing the Servants
In the living room, Grandpa Chu was addressing the servants.
"I have reliable information that something serious might happen in the next two weeks. That's why I called you today to ask you to go home and be with your family. Make sure to prepare a lot of food, medicine, and some self-defense weapons such as knives. But do everything discreetly. Don't make yourself a target for malicious people once things go wrong."
"I can't give you more information, make sure you stock up on food and water, especially those with a long shelf life, and improve the security of your homes. If possible, install anti-theft doors with double locks. Don't try to save money. Life is more important."
" That's all I can tell you for now. I will release you today so that you have enough time to go home and prepare. You will also be given extra money. Each of you will get one million yuan, which should be enough for all preparations.
Remember what I said, be discreet, and beware of the people you think you could trust and call family. Don't just welcome anyone into your home. Take care of your immediate family; your parents and children. Forget about anyone else."
"Go and see the butler. He will give you your money then you can leave. Again, make sure all your preparations and if you need to move to higher ground are done within a week."
"Thank you Old General." All the servants said in unison.
This was the advantage of having Grandpa Chu take care of the situation; they didn't ask questions and just believed him. And because of this, many lives were saved during the apocalypse.
After the servants left, the family sat in the living room to talk.
"The apocalypse is only ten days away. We have prepared almost everything. Is there anything missing?" Grandpa Chu took a deep breath and asked. He really felt stressed with this apocalypse issue, but he was also grateful that they had known earlier than anyone else and prepared.
"Everything is almost done, Father. I was thinking of dismissing the workers in the company, but if I do it this early, it might cause chaos. So, I will wait until only five days remain before letting them go to prepare." The first to reply was Father Chu. He had done his fair share of work with the stockpiling, especially water and medicine.
"Miao and I are going to Pearl City tomorrow. We have to buy seafood once we are there, and I am sure Bunny would want to buy street food as well… "
"Of course, street food in a city covered in seafood, how can I miss that?" Chu Miao cut her brother off mid-sentence.
"Okay, like I was saying, we will go to Pearl City to buy seafood and go to the water reservoir to fill the tanks at night. It might take up to five days to fill ten tanks every day. We also have to buy boats. Pearl City is a city surrounded by the sea, and getting water-related items there is easier and cheaper."
"That's good then. Bunny has been running around since she left the hospital. Take a rest today then go to Pearl City with your brother tomorrow." Hearing her grandfather's words, Chu Miao felt a warmth in her heart as she knew he was feeling sorry for her. But she also knew that now is not the time to rest. She can rest once the apocalypse starts.
"It's okay grandpa. I have to go check on how the renovation of my penthouse is going. It's supposed to end today, so I must go to make sure that everything is done well."
The penthouse was in a high-rise building on the 20th floor. The building had twenty floors and she was really grateful that they could also use the roof. She had no idea who owned the floor below hers. She had never cared. She just hoped it wouldn't be an annoying person. But considering the type of people who buy apartments in the same community. They had class and wealth.
She had discussed it with her family and decided to stay there in the first months of the apocalypse. So, her father contacted a renovation company for her; then she gave the specifications of the changes to be made.
The apartment was large; it had one master bedroom and four smaller bedrooms, two living rooms, an open kitchen, and a store room. There were also two bathrooms; one could be used by the people in the small bedrooms and the other is accessible from the living room. The master bedroom, of course has its own bathroom.
"Okay then, just don't work too hard. You have your brother and father."
"Alright, by the way grandpa, I think we forgot about something very important. If there is a snowstorm or extreme cold and there is no electricity to run floor heating, what are we going to do? Having winter clothes and electric blankets isn't going to cut it." Chu Miao suddenly remembered this detail.
"That's not a big deal. I bought almost hundred generators. These should be enough to power the whole house." Chu Hao couldn't help but think that his sister was a little confused. She was the one who kept the generators.
Even though everyone had a space ring, they only kept a few things such as emergency food, medicine, and clothes inside. Everything else still goes to Chu Miao's warehouse in the space ring.
This was because even though some items would not perish, their materials could be affected by environmental changes. Since time in the warehouse is at a stand still, the family decided to keep items that are prone to wear and tear there.
"You are such a dummy. Do you have too much fuel? Or are the generators running on water? And even if it was water, do you think we would have too much in the apocalypse?"
Hearing Chu Miao calling her brother a dummy, everyone in the living room laughed. Indeed, he was a dummy.
