Apocalypse: The Hidden Oracle

Chapter 13: "If He Could Do it, So Can We"

Twenty minutes later, near the main square of the residential complex...

The woman trembled on a high tree branch, her knuckles white from gripping the wood. "Please... let me down! I'll do anything! I don't need food or water anymore—just don't leave me here!"

The stocky man glared up at her. "Shut the hell up and do as you're told! When we're in position, scream your lungs out. Draw the zombies to you. We'll take care of the rest."

The lanky man beside him swallowed hard. "Boss... twenty zombies? Just the two of us? What if—"

"Relax," the stocky man interrupted. "Didn't you see that guy yesterday? One dude with a fire axe took out seven like it was nothing. These zombies are weak—we've just been overestimating them."

The logic sounded convincing enough. If that average-looking guy could do it, why couldn't they?

The woman's first scream was hesitant.

The second was pure terror.

A piercing shriek tore through the air, and the square erupted into chaos. Zombies swarmed the tree, arms outstretched, their guttural growls merging into a horrifying chorus.

"Now!" the stocky man whispered.

They crept forward, kitchen knives raised.

The stocky man's blade lodged deep into a zombie's skull—and stuck. He yanked. Nothing. The zombie collapsed, dragging the knife with it.

The lanky man hacked at a neck. The blade bit halfway through before jamming against vertebrae. The zombie turned its head slowly, milky eyes locking onto its attacker.

"B-Boss... this isn't like yesterday at all..."

"Run!" The stocky man bellowed—a mistake.

The horde pivoted toward them.

The lanky man scrambled up, but his boss was already ahead, wheezing from the sprint. "Come on! We're close to the building!"

A hand clasped the stocky man's arm—then twisted.

A kick to the ankle.

Crack.

The lanky man crumpled, betrayal dawning too late. "You... bastard..."

The zombies descended.

The stocky man didn't look back.

From his window, Lucas watched the chaos unfold.

The woman remained trapped in the tree.

The lanky man's screams faded under wet, tearing sounds.

And the stocky man?

He'd made it to the building's entrance—only to find the door locked from the inside.

Some lessons have to be learned the hard way.
