Apocalypse: The echoes of Madness

Chapter 27: The endless struggle [3]

Yuri's blade sank again, but the guardian's skin only closed around it, suffocating the strike. It roared in fury, then slammed its fist down onto the ground, sending shockwaves through the air. Cale was thrown to the side, crashing against the broken stones, his vision spinning.

"Get up!" Yuri screamed, her voice sharp with desperation, but Cale could barely move. The guardian's foot came down just inches from him, cracking the earth and sending debris flying. The creature was relentless, every strike designed to crush, to end them.

Cale staggered to his feet, vision blurry, but his resolve was clear. "We need something else," he gasped, his voice raw. "We can't keep fighting it like this."

Yuri's eyes darted around them, her mind racing. The temple's walls were slowly crumbling from the force of the guardian's attacks, but they weren't the key. The creature's power was more than just brute force—it was the very nature of its being that was undying.

Then it clicked. "The heart," Yuri whispered, her voice barely audible.

Cale's gaze followed hers to the center of the guardian's chest, where a pulsating orb of stone seemed to glow with an unnatural light. It was small—too small for the beast of its size—but it was there, buried deep within the guardian's chest. The heart of the guardian, the core of its existence.

Before he could voice his thought, the guardian reared back, its form radiating an aura of raw, destructive energy. It began to tremble violently, and the ground split open beneath it, as if the entire temple was reacting to its distress.

Yuri and Cale had no time to prepare. The guardian's mouth—if it could be called that—opened wide, revealing rows of jagged stone teeth, and it let out a horrid, shrieking wail that seemed to shatter the air. It felt as if the very walls of the temple were closing in on them, and the sound rattled their bones, threatening to drive them mad.

The guardian's clawed hand shot forward, its speed unfathomable, aiming directly for them both. Cale dodged, but the weight of the beast's strike left a crater in the ground, a gaping hole that seemed to suck the very air out of their lungs.

Yuri didn't waste another second. She sprinted toward the guardian's chest, her blade raised high. She would pierce the heart of the beast, or they would both die trying.

But as she reached the heart, a sickening, unnatural roar erupted from the depths of the guardian's body. Its regeneration was no longer just mending—it was accelerating, feeding off the energy that surged through the creature's every limb. The stone around Yuri's blade began to warp and twist, attempting to close around her, to crush her into oblivion.

The heartbeat of the stone giant thundered in her ears. The creature would never die.

The guardian's hand shot out with terrifying speed, its massive fingers curling around Yuri's body before she could even react. She gasped, trying to break free, but its grip was like iron. Her blade slipped from her hand and clattered to the ground, useless.

"Yuri!" Cale shouted, his voice raw with panic, but there was no time. The creature was too quick.

The guardian lifted her effortlessly, its monstrous fingers tightening as it dragged her toward its grotesque mouth. The stench of death and decay filled the air, making her stomach churn. She fought, kicking and twisting in the air, but the creature's grip only tightened. Her vision blurred with the pressure, but through it, she saw the gaping maw, jagged stone teeth glinting in the dim light.

It was going to swallow her whole.

"Get off!" she screamed, trying to break free, but the guardian paid no mind. Its mouth opened wider, revealing rows of sharp, jagged teeth, and a cold, suffocating air poured from within.

Cale moved, desperation driving him forward, but he was too far. The guardian's other hand reached up, holding Yuri like a doll, bringing her closer to its mouth.

"Not like this…" Yuri thought, the fight draining from her. There was no time to think of a plan, no time to escape. The weight of the creature's grip crushed her chest, and the only thing she could do was brace for the inevitable.

The corridor was eerily silent as the group ventured deeper into the temple, the air thick with the scent of age and decay. Arthur moved ahead, his sharp eyes scanning the floor with unrelenting focus. The stones beneath their feet were cracked and uneven, some showing faint signs of magical distortion. He crouched down, running his fingers over the ancient carvings etched into the stone.

"This isn't safe," he said, his voice low but urgent. "The floor here is weak. Step exactly where I step, or you'll risk falling through."

The others exchanged uneasy glances, the weight of his words sinking in. The faint tremor in the ground beneath their boots only heightened the growing sense of dread.

Emily nodded, her footsteps were light, almost soundless, as she mirrored Arthur's movements. Every step felt like walking on the edge of a knife, her body tense and ready to spring at the first sign of danger. Her eyes darted to the shadows, scanning for anything that might make the situation worse.

Behind her, James moved carefully, his larger frame making each step feel precarious. He clenched his fists, his knuckles white, prepared to grab anyone if they stumbled. Sweat beaded on his forehead, not from exertion but from the suffocating pressure of the situation.

Rose followed closely behind, her sharp instincts prickling like a warning bell in her mind. The floor seemed to hum faintly, as if it were alive, waiting for the perfect moment to collapse beneath them. Her heart raced, but her expression remained stoic.

The temple's oppressive air thickened as they moved further into the collapsing corridor. Each step was a gamble.

Emily followed cautiously, her heart hammering in her chest. The once-confident fighter now felt small and vulnerable in the face of the crumbling abyss beneath them. The floor trembled violently as she took another step, and without warning, the stone beneath her foot gave way.

A scream tore from her throat as she fell, her body plunging into the darkness below. Time seemed to slow as her hands desperately clawed at the edge of the floor, her nails scraping against the cold stone.

"Emily!" Rose's voice cut through the chaos.

Emily dangled precariously, her legs swinging over the gaping void. Her breaths came in ragged sobs, her usual strength reduced to sheer panic. "I-I'm scared!" she cried, tears streaming down her face. Her arms trembled under the strain, her grip weakening with each passing second.

Rose didn't hesitate. She dropped to her knees, her hand shooting out to grab Emily's wrist. The force of the pull nearly dragged Rose over the edge, but she anchored herself, her teeth clenched as she fought to hold on.

Emily's voice trembled as she dangled over the dark abyss, her tear-streaked face pale with fear. She looked up at Rose, whose hand clutched hers tightly, knuckles white from the strain.

"It's... it's trying to kill us!" Emily gasped, her voice cracked, trembling with fear and exhaustion as she clung to Rose's hand, her grip desperate against the weight pulling her down,"Its first target… it was me from the start!"

Her status screen pulsed relentlessly,

A haunting echo: "Warning, warning," endlessly.
