Zhao Yan's residential complex had three gatekeeper shifts, eight hours per person.

Finally, his shift was over. After a quick handover with Old Man Zhu, the relief gatekeeper, Zhao Yan hurried back to his small living quarter. Following his new memories, he reached under the mattress and pulled out a plastic bag. Inside, an envelope held a bank card—this card contained Zhao Yan's entire fortune: 200,000 in retirement savings.

Zhao Yan had considered other ways to make more money, but the original Old Man Zhao's memories held no stock market insights or winning lottery numbers. Loans? At Zhao Yan's current age, who would lend to him? Formal bank loans and online loans were out of the question. Even loan sharks wouldn't bother with someone his age.

Clutching the card, Zhao Yan left his room, intending to withdraw all the cash. Just as he reached the complex entrance, he stumbled upon a good show.

Zheng Bo was in the middle of a heated argument with his so-called girlfriend. Zheng Bo wasn't tall, probably under 1.7 meters, slightly plump with a round face and squinting eyes. His alleged girlfriend, Chen Jiahui, on the other hand, was about 1.75 meters tall, with a curvaceous figure and a pure, lovely face.

Everyone in the complex knew that Chen Jiahui wasn't Zheng Bo's girlfriend at all; he was merely pursuing her relentlessly. Yet, Zheng Bo always insisted on introducing himself as her boyfriend. In the original Zhao Yan's memories, Chen Jiahui met a tragic end after the apocalypse. Zheng Bo used her, then tossed her out into the freezing cold to freeze to death, claiming it was retribution for her betrayal.

"Zheng Bo! I'm warning you, stop telling everyone you're my boyfriend! Look in a mirror! You're not worthy of me!" Chen Jiahui spat, her face full of disgust.

Zheng Bo clenched his fists, his face sinking into a dark scowl. After taking a deep breath, he forced a smile he probably thought was friendly. "Jiahui, I'll give you one more chance. Are you really unwilling to be my girlfriend?"

"Hmph! Unwilling! Look at your own pathetic self. You're not even as good as Old Man Zhao, the gatekeeper! If there were only two men left in the world, I'd rather pick Old Man Zhao than you!" Chen Jiahui declared, glancing at Zhao Yan, who was enjoying the spectacle nearby.

Chen Jiahui's sudden remark instantly pulled Zhao Yan into Zheng Bo's furious gaze. Zheng Bo turned and shot a venomous glare at Zhao Yan, then glared back at Chen Jiahui. "I hope you don't regret this later!" He then stormed out of the complex.

At this moment, Zhao Yan cautiously approached Chen Jiahui. "Was what you just said true?"

Chen Jiahui looked at Zhao Yan with surprise, then scoffed, "Old Man Zhao, I said 'if'! You're so old, what are you even thinking?" With that, she turned and walked back into the complex.

Watching Chen Jiahui's retreating figure, Zhao Yan stroked his chin, a faint smile playing on his lips. Just now, the System had notified him that Chen Jiahui also qualified as a high-score female, even scoring 8.9 points.

After leaving the complex, Zhao Yan went straight to a nearby shopping mall. First, he revamped his wardrobe. A slim-fit denim jacket, loose-fitting straight-leg jeans, high-top combat boots, and finally, a denim hat. With this outfit, Zhao Yan's aura underwent a dramatic transformation, from a slovenly old man to a stylish grandpa.

Zhao Yan nodded in satisfaction at his reflection in the changing room mirror. Aside from being a bit old, he was quite pleased with everything else. At the checkout, the two female sales associates couldn't stop smiling as they looked at Zhao Yan.

"Grandpa, if only you were younger, maybe I'd even chase after you!" one slightly chubby salesgirl with glasses teased.

"Actually, I'm not bad even now. Old but vigorous, full of vitality, and in some areas, not inferior to young men. Don't believe me? You can try!" Zhao Yan jested back.

His teasing remark made the two girls giggle endlessly. In this pleasant atmosphere, Zhao Yan paid for his purchases.

Next, he headed to a down jacket store. Zhao Yan searched the shop for a long time but couldn't find a suitable down jacket. Just as he was about to leave, a female store clerk approached him. "Grandpa, didn't find anything suitable? What kind are you looking for? Tell me, and I can help you pick something out."

So Zhao Yan told the female clerk his requirements. After listening, the clerk thought for a moment and said, "Grandpa, what you're describing isn't a normal down jacket; it's more like cold-weather gear, usually not sold in regular stores."

Zhao Yan felt a pang of disappointment and prepared to leave. But then the clerk spoke again, "Grandpa, don't rush off. While most stores don't sell them, we actually have one here. It's a bit expensive, and since hardly anyone asks for it, we don't display it."

"Hurry and get it out, let me see!" Zhao Yan exclaimed, his disappointment replaced by eagerness.

"Alright, Grandpa, please wait a moment!" With that, the clerk scurried off towards the storeroom.

A moment later, the female clerk emerged, pulling a large box. Opening it, a bright orange cold-weather suit lay inside—a one-piece, full-body cold suit.

"Grandpa, while this isn't the absolute best cold-weather gear, it's still excellent. It's passed extreme polar cold testing," the clerk explained.

"How much?" Zhao Yan asked, gazing at the extreme cold suit.

"Fifty thousand," the clerk stated.

"That expensive?" Zhao Yan was surprised.

"It's not expensive, Grandpa. Many places don't even sell this kind of thing, and the quality is superb. Plus, we'll include a set of specially designed thermal lining," the clerk said earnestly.

"Alright, I'll take it!" Zhao Yan deliberated for a moment before deciding to buy it. Although Zhao Yan planned to hole up with Lin Qing'er after the apocalypse started, slowly gaining points and strengthening himself, there was always the possibility of needing to venture outside. So, a cold-weather suit was essential. While a regular down jacket could work, its cold-proof effect couldn't compare to professional cold-weather gear.

After paying, Zhao Yan left the mall, having spent nearly sixty thousand in one go.

Next, Zhao Yan found a barber shop and got a fresh, clean haircut, further enhancing his image. After his haircut, Zhao Yan grabbed a quick bite at a small restaurant nearby.

On his way back to the complex, passing a flower shop, Zhao Yan even specifically bought a bouquet of roses.

Returning to his small living quarter, Zhao Yan flopped onto his bed, closing his eyes to rest and prepare for the "big battle" tonight.

About two hours later, Zhao Yan's phone suddenly rang. He picked it up; it was Lin Qing'er. Zhao Yan eagerly answered the call.

"Old Zhao, come over now!" Lin Qing'er's soft, alluring voice came from the other end.

"Alright! I'll be right there!" Zhao Yan replied excitedly.
