Chapter 53: Helplessness

He rushed to the commander's side while they were getting out.

"Damn!" Rargnes wispered. "They were with the noble! That's why the noble didn't kill them when they were so weak! If you heard me, never ever fight him. We'll all die. Oh God!"

The news hit Ragnes as he ran, spells hitting the sideways.

"It's not the time for all this; conserve your energy, preserve your focus!"

He snapped back to reality, looking around, barely dodging a fireball spell.

The heat of the fire burned Ragnes' armor and uniform, catching fire. He rolled on the ground as the flames spread, soldiers rolling beside him, their bodies black, rolling to extinguish the fire that continued and persisted regardless of the magic they used to summon water.

This fire was unique; it destroyed flesh at an alarming rate, and while they were rolling on the ground, the goblins targeted them with ice spells.

This reminded him of Sengrar, but he hurried to run with the commander, shouting, "Damn it! Not now!"

Rargnes was not a chosen one! He was not a hero! He was just a pawn for the version of himself that would succeed! Just as he always was! Like this moment when he instrumentally prepared for his future! All the savings in the market for the future of another Ragnes, with other cells! He might be similar, with the same thoughts or nearly, but he was different! A part of him would never accept this! Without a soul... he understood why people desired a soul! They wanted coherence! Not to be just dust thinking in the middle of nowhere on a planet not even worth talking about in the fucking universe.

Rargnes gathered all his strength as he ran, looking down to see the different foldings of the earth had been changed strangely, jumping around huge rocks.

Then, when he raised his head, he noticed that the guards of the commander were a few meters away, fighting the noble.

"How did he get here?!"

He finally looked around at the remnant of the army getting destroyed, beaten to death on the ground, their corpses in pieces. North, east, west, south, soldiers were everywhere.

Then the commander smashed the noble, who answered with a blue sword, the clash provoking blinding light, rock flying everywhere, grazing his waist.

Rargnes held back the urge to vomit and charged headfirst forward.

It was exhausting! Why? Why did he have to do all that!? Why did he have to die before living his life! He should have taken more risks! At the tutorial! If he had taken all opportunities, if he had gone to other areas with the portals!

He couldn't just live with the noble. Like the first, he would die if he passed too much time in this world.

A wave of rock smashed him down a rock. The shock pushed his upper body forward as he heard bones breaking. His arms fell. His breathing almost stopped.

"Plan K!" Yelled the commander's voice behind him. "Fucking tell him! Quickly!"

Rargnes looked as the commandant was slashing his sword, destroying the landscape with every move, blocked by the noble with a shield. Then the noble slashed and the noble stopped still, a sword penetrating his belly.

The commandant vomited blood in disbelief. Wasn't the noble a mage?

"Plan K!" He yelled. "Now!"

"It's the communication! They aren't working!"

The commandant's posture fell. His shoulders slumped weakly. Then he raised a shield, barely blocking the blow of the noble. As the shield got destroyed, the commandant smashed into a rock.

That was bad, thought Rargnes. After the commandant, he would come for him. He had to care about his other Rargnes, like the voice was telling him.

He looked at his sword, which had fallen to the ground. He didn't feel pain, but he didn't want to do it. Nor could he. His body didn't answer.

The commandant got up, yelling, "Make it work, or you'll all die!" Then his sleeve revealed a knife he thrust on his own head, provoking an explosion that destroyed it in one hit together with the knife.

The commandant's body fell heavily on the ground, headless.

Then he appeared from nowhere, wearing a magnificent 3-piece costume and a mask, with two goblins next to him, and threw a class-upgrade token that disintegrated as it slowly fell from the air.
