Chapter 39: Group’s leader
They went towards the portal and found nothing. Then they visited a city, then others. They stopped at a few stores, looking for supplies and food. With some additional supplies from supermarkets where electricity was still barely functioning—for a strange reason—they managed to lower the value of their purchases at the border, save a bit more, and survive a bit better.
"How does it work?" Jean asked. "I mean, for the electricity and all? Is there an explanation with the king or prime minister?"
"How would I know? Once this world is explored, we come back without memories; it's like a trial for the inhabitants of this world, a way, besides the wars they never want to happen, to take territory."
"There's no internal war?"
"No, it's the king's domain; it's sacred, but assassinations aren't wars; it's for the good of the community," RedStar said. "For the common good."
They seemed to have different points of view. One could challenge a noble as long as they were stronger, and that would be for the common good. As long as the world became stronger, it was the excuse the prime minister had used to kill a few nobles. That's why he allowed the change.
They went to another city in the truck, Rargnes resting his face on his hand, sighing. He tapped his fingers, impatient and nervous.
"You have to do it," a voice inside him said. "You have to retrieve that energy."
But did he really need to? He wondered. He didn't want to dislodge that noble. It was too much trouble, the dream of a child. He just wanted to get himself a citizenship certificate and live his life there, developing his energy.
One day, the radar indicated an excellent signal. They followed it, without much motivation, to arrive in front of a group of people attacking another group of people. Natives on one side, invaders on the other.
"What do we do?"
Rargnes watched the scene and, after a few moments, saw that the invaders were winning the fight and destroying the arms of those who were resisting. He signaled for them to wait.
"We wait a little longer."
Once the humans were captured, the groups of 6 invading people discovered the uses of cans, drinking, and reveling after this capture.
"Maybe we could arrange to give our prey to someone who could cash in the total sum for us," Rargnes thought. Then, he did some calculations and wondered, "I'm not sure we'd win."
They had armor and swords.
"Do you want to try it?"
Some shook their heads, others nodded.
"We have to do it," said Sengrar.
"They don't have magic..." said Jean. "with Sengrar and your last bullets, we can try, right?"
His bullets weren't as useful now. Rargnes thought they could deter humans, but hardly the invaders.
The only problem was that a few days of training without killing had not allowed Jean and the rest of the group to develop strength.
RedStar didn't want to increase in strength, and only Rargnes and Sengrar were a match.
He looked at them. It was his only life.
"Let's try it! You can try again later! Evolve!"
"No, let's not try it."
While he spoke, Sengrar took out his specter and formed ice shards that flew towards the men, piercing two who screamed, bloodied.
"Sengrar!"
"We're killing them," he said coldly.
He didn't want to forget this world. Even dying was better than losing his memories, becoming one of those barbarians.
"Go!" said Jean. "I'm with you!"
Rargnes took his weapons in his hands, pulled out his gun, took a wooden shield, and rushed too, shooting from afar with Sengrar at the men.
His last 10 bullets hit 3 men, 1 down, 2 fleeing, making them stop for a few moments.
They could fight if they had time - they wouldn't give them that.
Jean arrived and crushed the head of an enemy with his mace.
Meanwhile, Sengrar was casting spells on the fleeing enemies while Yurs, Truckdriver, and Roeas were finishing off those on the ground.
Noah cried out in pain on the other side, his arm bloody. He was slowing down an enemy from escaping. Sengrar launched an ice shard perfectly into the eye of the invader, who fell dead.
2 enemies escaped, while the rest were killed.
"Sengrar, what was that?" Rargnes asked, calming his voice. "Why did you attack them?"
"It went well!" said Truckdriver. "Stop making such a fuss. You want to be the leader? Well, you're not strong enough! That's talent!" he said, pointing at Sengrar.
"I don't want to lose my memories," said Sengrar. "I don't want to. I have things to settle, and those invaders who took our world from us! Those bastards and their fucking king! If I have the means, one day, I'll kill them all!"
RedStar shuddered.
