Chapter 34, Strategy
Chapter 34, Strategy
Adventurers' Guild.
After practicing swordsmanship for a while, Wu Heng patrolled the designated route with his skeleton, Barson.
The floating light orb from the Dancing Lights spell illuminated the space around him.
"This spell is really quite useful."
Although he also had a flashlight, this spell, which doesn’t consume power, felt more cost-effective.
The spell's effect was also quite good, brighter at night compared to daytime usage.
And it covered a large area, illuminating everything around him.
However, Wu Heng also noticed a downside to this spell.
The light orb surrounded him, which meant that in the darkness, he was the brightest target.
If there were enemies, they would focus on him immediately.
It was easy to attract fire.
So, it’s better to use it less when nothing’s happening—no, actually, it's better to go out less at night.
He patrolled all the way to the training ground, went inside to check, and finding nothing, came out again.
But as soon as he opened the door, Wu Heng's heart suddenly tightened, and he quickly dispelled the magic, plunging the surroundings into complete darkness.
Just now, in the darkness, he saw someone.
He was certain the other person saw him as well.
"Good evening, friend of the Adventurers' Guild."
Wu Heng squinted his eyes slightly, carefully moving his position and drawing his pistol, releasing the safety.
"What are you doing here?"
The other person responded casually, "The others were so easily deceived and sent away. When they come back to find everyone here slaughtered, don’t you think that would be... exciting?"
Bang bang bang!
Before the words were finished, Wu Heng fired in the direction of the voice, and Barson fired as well.
The deafening gunshots echoed in the corridor, the muzzle flashing sparks.
But the darkness enveloped everything around them.
"Locate his position."
Wu Heng placed one hand on Barson's shoulder, following the direction Barson was facing and pulling the trigger.
The bullets traversed the darkness, disappearing as if they were stones thrown into a swamp.
He was careless.
The flashlight was in his backpack, so he could only rely on Barson's vision to roughly determine the enemy's location.
Luckily, he had plenty of bullets this time.
"Damn it, what the hell is that thing?" A curse came from the darkness.
Then, the sound of hurried footsteps approached.
"Hold him off!" Wu Heng continued to command.
Barson dropped the pistol, grabbed his dual blades, and charged into the darkness.
Soon, the sounds of fighting and weapons clashing could be heard in the darkness.
Wu Heng quickly reloaded, took out the flashlight from his bag, and shone it straight ahead.
The blinding beam of light suddenly lit up, causing the enemy to shield his eyes with his arm, and Barson took the opportunity to stab forward, aiming for the side of the neck.
Clang!
The enemy's arm guard blocked the strike, producing a loud clash.
At this moment, Wu Heng finally got a good look at the enemy.
Medium build, thin face, thick eyebrows, wearing leather armor and wielding a sword.
Wu Heng glanced at him and pulled the trigger again.
Unlike the blind shooting before, he could now see the enemy's position.
The first shot hit the wall, the second shot targeted the enemy's rolling path, followed by a third and fourth shot.
The enemy, not daring to take the shots head-on, quickly dodged.
He quickly retrieved a scroll from somewhere and abruptly opened it.
Whoosh!
A tentacle covered in dark, inky tendrils shot towards him.
Wu Heng fired at it, but the bullet passed through the tentacle without any effect.
He rolled to the side, dodging the attack.
The black tentacle slammed into the wall behind him with a loud thud.
The enemy attempted to rush forward, but seeing Wu Heng raise his gun again, he quickly ducked into a dark corner while a black, round grenade rolled out.
"Damn it, Barson, fall back."
Shouting as he quickly retreated, there was a bang as the grenade exploded, filling the area with smoke.
Wu Heng pulled back, reloading as he did so.
This enemy was far more formidable than those previous wanted criminals.
His movements were agile, and his combat rhythm was precise.
And by now, neither the captain nor Kavina had arrived, indicating there might be more than one enemy.
A large number of forces had been diverted from Blackstone Town, making it hard not to suspect they had fallen into a decoy strategy.
Wu Heng reloaded again, the magazine dropping to the ground.
The smoke in front of him suddenly surged, and a figure rushed out, slicing down with a sword.
Barson quickly charged forward, blocking between the two with his dual blades crossed above his head.
Clang!
Another sharp clash, with sparks flying.
Barson's body bent under the pressure, sinking to one knee.
The enemy's face lit up with joy, his longsword twisting as he stabbed through the chest armor blocking his path.
But as the sword pierced, the man's expression of joy turned to confusion.
Why did it feel like he had stabbed into empty air?
Before he could think further, the rogue in front of him grabbed his sword arm and slashed upwards with the other hand's dagger, aiming for his chest and abdomen.
At the same time, a dark green water ball smashed down from above.
......
Outside the city, at the Broken Stone Bridge.
Various scouting birds returned from the night.
Reports started coming in, "Sir, up ahead is a pile of rubble, no signs of human activity."
"Same here, nothing found. Are you sure this is the place?" The ranger from the adventurer squad also spoke up.
As soon as these words were spoken, everyone's brows furrowed.
If one person said it, there might be some oversight, but with both the guards and adventurers saying the same thing, it couldn't be a mistake.
Did they come to the wrong place?
"Move, the whole squad, surround the area up ahead," a square-faced commander ordered.
Clatter!
The guard squad rushed out, quickly approaching and surrounding the pile of rubble.
This was the remnants of a collapsed manor, where some passing merchants would rest nearby.
But now it seemed there was no one here.
"It shouldn't be, the intel said they were hiding here," someone muttered.
The deacon Yazde gently reminded, "Search the area."
The square-faced commander ordered, "Search, see if there are any cellars or hidden spots."
The guards and adventurers, holding torches, began a careful search.
"Nothing, nothing left behind. Looks like the intel was false," someone said.
Everyone's faces instantly darkened.
At the same time, they thought of a terrifying possibility.
The square-faced commander pondered for a few seconds before coldly saying, "Let's go, return."
......
"Damn it, he's a mage!"
The dark green water ball shattered, splashing everywhere.
It was only now, after all this time, that he realized the other person was a mage.
The burning sensation from the acid blurred his vision, and relying on memory, he turned to retreat to the corner.
"Barson, kill him."
Barson charged again, with Wu Heng following behind, firing several more bullets ahead.
The enemy’s vision was obstructed, and his reactions were a bit slower.
He only began to dodge after hearing the gunshots, but it was already too late; the bullets hit him instantly.
He staggered, unable to maintain his balance.
Wu Heng quickly pulled the trigger again, firing bullets as if they were free, hitting the target, who collapsed with a thud.
After a slight twitch, the body stiffened and lay still on the ground.
No experience point notification?
Wu Heng didn’t approach, instead firing another shot at the enemy on the ground.
Bang!
As the gunshot rang out, the enemy on the ground quickly rolled to the side, trying to get up and escape again.
Barson blocked his path.
Bang bang!
The gun fired again, with one bullet piercing through his neck, blood spraying everywhere.
