Chapter 339: Wang Meng's Plan
Han Yan gritted her teeth, recalling the information she had once seen in a certain biological research institute. Despite some reluctance, she decided to test the waters.
Upon hearing her words, several mercenaries exchanged glances, a glint of interest shining in their eyes.
Observing their expressions, Han Yan gained a bit of confidence.
"How about this, even if the mission isn't completed, there will still be rewards. If you obtain what I want, I'll double the mission reward for you."
Faced with substantial benefits, the men couldn't help but hesitate, their actions reflecting an inner struggle. Together, they turned their gaze toward the scar-faced leader.
The scar-faced man remained silent for a moment, then lifted his head to look at Han Yan, a hint of greed flashing in his eyes.
Surprised, Han Yan tightened her grip on the handgun, her vigilance intensifying.
"Captain Han's offer is not bad, but there's one thing. We also need to be able to get out alive. Just now, you saw those vines everywhere. If they all entangle us, with just a few of us, how long can we last?"
The scar-faced man sneered, desire blatantly evident in his eyes.
"Captain Han, you can offer any reward now, even double, but whether we, brothers, can survive to collect that reward is another matter."
"We agreed before this mission that there would be certain risks. Now that danger has appeared, do you want to back out?"
Han Yan's mind was already contemplating the idea of retreat.
Unfortunately, the things in this botanical garden are just like that. If we could obtain them, perhaps it could change the entire world.
Regrettably, this group of people is already the strongest that Han Yan could hire within the entire base.
Even so, the group finds themselves trapped here. Not to mention obtaining what she desires, it seems unlikely they can even survive easily.
"Captain Han, this can't be blamed on us. It's because you didn't clarify the situation before the mission. Now, everyone is in such a dangerous situation."
"Yeah, exactly. If we knew it was this dangerous, even with double the reward, I definitely wouldn't have taken it."
Several mercenaries around immediately started clamoring.
Han Yan's expression became extremely unpleasant. Initially, she had managed to persuade these mercenaries with the promise of double the reward, but now, the scar-faced leader's words had stirred some anger among the group.
As for the remaining cannon fodder survivors, although they didn't have the courage to confront Han Yan, who held a handgun, their expressions turned unfriendly as they gathered around.
"What do you intend to do?"
Han Yan looked at the scar-faced man, her eyes filled with a hint of disgust. His blatantly greedy gaze was quite repulsive to her.
"Hahaha, Captain Han, us brothers don't have any other thoughts. We just want to get some reward in advance. In case, when we return to the base, you decide to go back on your word, it won't be easy for us!"
The scar-faced man chuckled.
Han Yan breathed a sigh of relief. So, that's how it is.
"I didn't bring much with me. In my bag, there's only some food and water, as well as some nutrient paste. As for the vouchers issued by the base, there's only these. Take them all!"
Han Yan handed over a few items, including some roughly printed vouchers with the number fifty on them.
After the apocalypse, the value of the previously circulating money had long since disappeared.
For a long time, the transactions among these survivors were primarily conducted through barter. The most valuable commodities were, of course, firearms, ammunition, followed by food and water, and then some hard currencies like cigarettes and alcohol, which were difficult to produce in the post-apocalyptic world. Finally, there were everyday items.
Of course, this was the situation at the beginning of the apocalypse. Once people understood the habits of zombies, various large and small gathering places were established.
In these gathering places, internal transactions were often facilitated by the controllers of the base, who issued their own makeshift currency to facilitate trade.
In the Tianhe City base, the currency used for transactions was something called vouchers.
The purchasing power of these vouchers was quite robust. A five-unit voucher could generally buy a day's worth of food for an adult in the gathering place's shops or ten bullets. Alternatively, one could enjoy a stroll in the base's red-light district and spend time with two women.
"Here are five hundred vouchers, enough for each of you to buy food for half a month. The rest, I'll settle after we return to the base."
Several men received the vouchers, satisfaction flashing in their eyes.
"Haha, it seems Captain Han is indeed wealthy. As the one in charge of logistics in the base, pulling out five hundred vouchers effortlessly."
Scar-faced man laughed heartily.
"Now, are you satisfied? Rest assured, once we get out, the remaining reward will be paid in full. If you want any hard currency, I can arrange that as well."
For matters that could be resolved with money, Han Yan naturally didn't mind.
"Alright, but this isn't enough!"
"I know it's not enough, but it's all I have on me right now. If you want me to produce more immediately, I can't do it!"
Han Yan frowned, expressing some helplessness.
"That's not a problem. Captain Han, you still have a valuable item on you. With that, I reckon the reward for this mission is almost complete."
Scar-faced man approached with a lecherous grin, taking a few steps closer.
"Wang Meng, don't push it. I'll definitely give the remaining reward. If you want to act now, I'm not someone to mess with."
Seeing the look in the scar-faced man's eyes, Han Yan roughly understood what he meant. She directly pulled out the handgun from her waist and aimed it at the man in front of her.
Faced with the dark barrel of the gun, Wang Meng's steps finally came to a halt.
"Boss."
A few of Wang Meng's followers behind him pulled him back, speaking hesitantly.
"What's the matter? You don't think we can still get out, do you? Didn't you see it back in that canopy, those enormous vine monsters were everywhere, densely packed. Do you think we can survive getting out? Anyway, death is inevitable. Might as well enjoy ourselves before we die. I've had enough of life. Playing with a woman as fine as Captain Han is worth dying for."
With these words from the scar-faced man, the expressions of the remaining survivors changed, and they looked at each other.
"Wang Meng, you're talking nonsense. If you want to die, don't stop others. We can all work together. Can't we break through a wall together? How can it be impossible to get out? Those vines are not invincible. Didn't we cut through them before?"
Seeing the atmosphere being stirred up by Wang Meng, Han Yan became greatly anxious.
Although he held a gun in his hand, he was afraid that these people, driven to desperation and embracing a death wish, would become reckless and fearless of anything.
"Boss, how about giving it a try? As long as we don't enter the passage, there shouldn't be any major problems. Before, Song and the others also disappeared inside the passage, probably swallowed by those vines, but the vines outside should be safe."
A few underlings hesitated, trying to persuade the scar-faced man.
"Can you guarantee that we'll get out? Facing those vines, death is certain. Instead of wasting this opportunity, why not enjoy this woman? It's worth it before we die. Women like Captain Han, true gems, can't be compared to the trash in the base. If it weren't for this chance, we wouldn't have the opportunity in our entire lives."
Wang Meng grinned, his eyes having long lusted after this woman.
Women like Han Yan might not compare to the big celebrities before the apocalypse, but compared to the mediocre women in the base who had countless admirers, they were incomparably more beautiful.
However, due to Han Yan's high status in the base and the presence of powerful suitors, Wang Meng had no chance.
Now, finally finding an opportunity, Wang Meng, driven by his impulses, completely disregarded everything. With the mindset that even if he died, he wanted to die in the embrace of a woman, he made his move.
Bang...
Han Yan fired a shot at the ground beneath Wang Meng's feet.
The deafening gunshot echoed through the entire small room, startling everyone.
"You bitch, I guess you're not a virgin anymore. Since that's the case, let us have some fun. It won't cost you a piece of flesh. Why get so worked up?"
With a dark expression, Wang Meng aimed his shotgun at Han Yan, his tone filled with threats.
