Chapter 288: Failed Escape, Brutal Slaughter
"What is that..."
Lily rubbed her eyes and vaguely saw several figures moving on the city wall. Due to the distance, she couldn't see clearly, so she approached to get a better view, relying on her enhanced vision to understand the situation.
Soon, the personal wristbands of the nearby female warriors vibrated rapidly, waking them up. After checking the information on the wristbands, the female warriors quickly gathered and rushed towards the direction of the city wall.
At this moment, on the city wall, a dozen men were slowly retreating. Wu Junwen looked at the pitch-black night sky, and inside the base, everything seemed quiet, as if nothing unexpected had happened.
However, despite being close to escaping, his heart involuntarily started to feel nervous, as if something significant was about to happen.
But soon, the bright beams of flashlights illuminated the city wall. Wu Junwen's face changed drastically, and he didn't have time to urge the men beside him.
He quickly pushed aside a man who was about to descend along the rope, then grabbed the rope in a panic and jumped down. By this time, several female warriors had reached the top of the wall with their flashlights.
Seeing this, a few men who hadn't jumped down from the wall panicked. Some jumped down in haste, while others knelt down in fear, pleading for mercy.
Those men who jumped down were quickly subdued by the female warriors who followed suit, and their legs were mercilessly severed, leaving them writhing on the ground in agony.
"Wait for me..."
Lily finally managed to jump onto the city wall but found that the escaping men had already been completely subdued by the female warriors.
"Lily, you're too slow. You claimed to have spotted them first. Could it be that you spent the night 'charging up' with the leader's photo, got weak in the legs, and couldn't move fast enough?"
Several nearby female warriors teased each other.
"You're talking nonsense. It was dark, and I spent some time notifying you all."
Blushing, Lily replied. Fortunately, it was in the dark night, and the nearby female warriors couldn't easily discern the expression on her face.
"Don't we need to go after those escaping men?"
To avoid revealing too much, Lily quickly changed the subject.
From the city wall, they could see a few figures sprinting along the main road leading out of the base. It was evident that these were the men who had initially escaped.
"No need. They'll come back on their own later."
The squad leader of the female warriors casually remarked. As soon as she finished speaking, a muffled gunshot echoed in the night sky.
In the silent night, the sound of the gunshot reverberated far and wide, easily catching the attention of nearby zombies. Soon, wandering zombies started converging toward the city wall, surrounding the entire street.
Standing on the city wall, a dozen female warriors trampled the men who hadn't managed to escape underfoot. They watched the roaring horde of zombies not far away.
In the dark night, the tide-like mass of zombies surged forward, swiftly blocking the path for the few men who hadn't made it out of the street. Despairingly, they turned around to see a group of female warriors standing on the city wall, watching the scene with great interest.
"I told you filthy bugs are despicable! The Master, in great compassion, spared your lives, but you're too ignorant to appreciate it. Instead, you seek a path to death. So be it; we'll keep you to feed the zombies!"
A female warrior aimed her flashlight at the man writhing beneath her, sneering. With a cold laugh, she kicked him off the city wall.
The man, already with a broken leg, now tumbled down, unable to summon the strength to climb back up.
"Oh, please, forgive me! I beg you, please don't— I was wrong!"
Terrified and witnessing the approaching zombie horde, the man wet himself.
The men who had initially escaped, with intact limbs, were now trapped in the middle of the street. How could a man with missing limbs outrun the zombies closing in like a tidal wave?
"You useless piece of garbage! I have to get up in the middle of the night, and what if the Master finds out I neglected my duty and punishes me? Will you be responsible for me losing the chance of the Master's favor in the future?"
The female warrior squad leader, responsible for monitoring these men, appeared angry. She beheaded the man at her feet without any expression on her face and callously tossed his corpse down.
"So cool..."
Watching the squad leader's decisive and somewhat bloody methods, Lily felt stars twinkling in her eyes. Perhaps influenced by Derick, from the Mistress of Order to the female warriors, they all seemed adept at ruthless killings, showing no hesitation in taking a man's life.
Before the apocalypse, Lily, a regular medical graduate student, had never killed even a chicken. However, witnessing such scenes now, she found herself admiring the female warrior, hearing that the Master apparently liked such traits.
Sympathy for men or hesitation in the act of killing is not well-received, and sometimes even rejected within Order. Despite being assigned to the healing department, Lily herself has dealt with numerous zombies and is accustomed to such scenes.
"Lily, were you the one who first noticed these men attempting to escape?" The squad leader approached and inquired.
"Yes, I was the first to notice, and I immediately notified through the personal wristband," Lily replied.
"Good job. If these men had really managed to escape, they'd probably face punishment from the Mistresses. That would be a significant loss."
The squad leader expressed gratitude towards Lily.
"By the way, if the Commander-in-Chief comes later, could you say something positive for me? I'm okay with any form of punishment, just don't let it hinder my chances of being close to the Master. Opportunities in Order are already scarce, and if I get punished, there might be no chance at all. Can you do that?"
While making this request, the squad leader's face displayed a pleading expression.
Lily felt somewhat speechless. She remembered that this squad leader seemed to have been favored by the Master before. No wonder she was so anxious, afraid of being stuck in the Magic Capital without much chance of contact with the Master. For most female warriors in Order, the most terrifying punishment was having their only possibility of getting close or being favored by the Master stripped away.
"Well... okay, but if the Commander-in-Chief insists on punishment, I won't be able to stop it. At most, I can speak some kind words for you."
"That's enough, I'm already grateful!"
Meanwhile, below the city wall, Wu Junwen and his group were being forced to retreat by a horde of zombies. They were nearing the end of the street, and just twenty meters away was the city wall of the base.
"What do we do!" The group was on the brink of despair, and the slow, impending sense of death was truly terrifying.
Not far away, zombies roared wildly. Having caught a whiff of the scent of human flesh, they couldn't wait any longer, howling as they rushed toward the group of men.
The group wanted to rush into nearby buildings on the street for temporary refuge, but unfortunately, numerous zombies poured out from the buildings, excitedly staring with bloodshot eyes and roaring with bared fangs.
The men ran towards the base as if their lives depended on it, desperate to escape. Though they knew running back at this moment likely meant death, it still seemed better than being devoured by a horde of zombies.
"Enough, throw these few down to accompany them. If they want to run, let them run!" The squad leader gave the order, and the female warriors prepared to throw the remaining men on the city wall down.
"No, please, don't! I'll expose... someone organized this escape! Don't kill me!" In the face of imminent death, several men struggled frantically, pleading desperately and even voluntarily revealing that someone organized the escape, implicating Wu Junwen.
