Chapter 579: Zombie or human… does it really matter?
"Uh..."
Logan froze for a second, a flicker of surprise and hope flashing across his face. But then, as if reality caught up with him, he gave a wry smile. Who knows if he'd ever get the chance to wear it now.
"Awan, can I talk to you for a sec? Outside."
"What for?" Awan looked at him, eyes narrowing with suspicion.
Logan hesitated, then said, "I... want to give you flowers."
"Pfft! Logan, come on, quit messing around. It's the middle of a snowstorm—where would you even find flowers?" Awan clearly didn't buy it.
"Just come and see," Logan said, scratching the back of his head, a little sheepish.
Awan gave him a long look, then shrugged, grabbed a coat, and followed him out.
The cold air outside hit them like a splash of ice water, sharp and bracing. The moon hung bright in the sky, casting silver light over the snow-covered ground, making it sparkle like scattered stars.
The moonlight and snow blended together, painting a scene straight out of a fairytale.
Their boots crunched softly in the snow as they walked.
"So... where are these flowers?" Awan blinked her big eyes, curiosity getting the better of her.
"Almost there," Logan said with a small smile.
He led her just beyond the edge of the small town, to an open field still blanketed in untouched snow.
"Here," he said simply.
Awan looked around, puffing out her cheeks in disbelief. Her expression said it all: You've gotta be kidding me.
"It's just snow. Where are the flowers?"
"Watch," Logan said gently.
As soon as the words left his mouth, something incredible happened.
A soft pink glow began to spread across the field, casting a warm hue over the snow. Then, with a faint rustling sound, tiny green shoots began to push up through the snow, growing right before their eyes. In seconds, pink buds appeared, swelling and blooming into delicate flowers.
And it didn't stop there.
One after another, the blossoms burst forth, spreading across the field in waves, until the entire landscape was transformed into a sea of pink flowers.
"My God..."
Awan's eyes went wide, completely stunned. She never imagined that in the dead of winter, flowers could actually bloom.
Moonlight, snow, and flowers—all in one breathtaking scene. It was like stepping into a dream.
It was art.
Even Daisy 2.0Petal hadn't expected this. The same ability that had once slaughtered thousands was now helping the Zombie King woo a human girl, creating a moment of pure romance.
For the first time, those flowers—born of death—looked beautiful.
Awan stood frozen, overwhelmed by the surreal beauty in front of her. Logan figured this was the perfect moment to go all in. According to Big Ears' plan, the next step was the song.
So he took a breath and began to sing, the song he'd practiced over and over, the one Elegy had written just for this.
🎵
"If I told you I loved you, would it break us apart?
If I kept it a secret, would it just freeze my heart?
You're too kind, too beautiful...
I've been quiet for too long..."
🎵
Logan and Awan stood facing each other, their shadows stretching side by side under the moonlight.
Logan sang with everything he had, pouring his heart into every word.
Awan didn't interrupt. Her eyes stayed locked on his, wide and unblinking.
After a long pause.
Logan finally finished the song. He took a deep breath, trying to calm his nerves, then asked softly, "Awan… what did you think?"
"Huh? Logan, what were you just doing?" Awan blinked, her voice full of innocent confusion.
"Uh…" Logan's face froze. He stood there awkwardly, completely thrown off. For a moment, he didn't know what to say or where to put his hands.
"It's okay, hehe."
Maybe singing just wasn't something zombies were built for—unless they had some kind of special ability. And clearly, Logan didn't. He'd given it his all… but Awan hadn't even realized he was singing.
Meanwhile, deep in the dark forest nearby, the "planning committee" was huddled together, watching anxiously.
"We're screwed. I think it's bombing," Shrimpy whispered, panic in his voice.
"No way! I thought he sounded great!" Big Ears said, trying to stay optimistic.
Daisy 2.0 turned to him and asked, "Do you even know what song that was?"
"Nope…"
Big Ears shook his head like a bobblehead, his oversized tooth-shaped earring swinging wildly.
Clearly, he didn't have a musical bone in his body either. So he turned to Elegy.
"Elegy, what do you think? How'd he do?"
"He… tried his best," Elegy said, choosing his words carefully.
The group of Zombie Kings stood there, watching this historic moment unfold. A zombie king confessing his love to a human—this had to be a first in the entire world.
Back in the flower field, Logan and Awan were still standing face to face, neither saying a word. The silence stretched between them, thick with tension.
Then, finally, Logan took a deep breath, gathered his courage, and said in a low, steady voice, "Awan… I really like you. I've liked you for a long time. I don't even know why, but being with you—even when nothing special's happening—just makes me feel… happy. I want to be with you. Always."
"Oh…" Awan's cheeks flushed bright red, like a ripe apple. She lowered her head, clearly flustered.
Logan felt a wave of relief wash over him, like he'd just crossed a finish line. And judging by her reaction, she didn't seem to be rejecting him.
But there was still one more thing. The most important thing.
He had to tell her the truth.
"Awan… there's something else. I'm not human. I'm a Zombie King."
He decided to just rip the band-aid off. As he spoke, he reached up and pulled off the cloth that had always covered his eyes—revealing a pair of glowing, terrifying red eyes.
But to his surprise, Awan didn't scream. She didn't flinch. Instead, she slowly lifted her head and looked straight into those crimson eyes.
"I already knew," she said softly.
"What?" Logan blinked, stunned.
She knew?
Since when?
The truth was, Awan had suspected something was off from the very beginning. I mean, who walks around blindfolded and still manages to see perfectly?
And then there was the hunting. Logan always came back with food, every single time. But everyone knew the woods outside the town were crawling with zombies and monsters. No normal person could survive out there so easily.
Awan was smart. She'd figured it out a while ago—Logan wasn't human.
"Zombie or human… does it really matter?" she said gently.
"Awan…" Logan's voice cracked with emotion. He couldn't hold back anymore. He stepped forward and wrapped his arms around her, pulling her into a tight embrace.
Awan hesitated for just a second, then slowly lifted her arms and hugged him back—carefully, gently, as if accepting not just the hug, but everything he was.
She had accepted him. All of him. Even the part that wasn't human.
"Yesss!!"
Back in the forest, Shrimpy jumped up and down, unable to contain his excitement. Logan had done it. He'd actually pulled it off. The confession was a success, and Shrimpy was practically vibrating with joy.
But Big Ears yanked him back down and clamped a hand over his mouth.
"Keep it down!" he hissed.
