Chapter 211: Chapter 190 Wataru Playing Dragon Quest 4
After eating and taking a shower, Wataru went back to his room, eager to dive back into his adventure in Dragon Quest!
The Battle Against the Dragonlord
Wataru resumed his journey at the climactic moment—his final showdown with the Dragonlord! At first, the menacing ruler appeared in his humanoid form, standing tall with a wicked grin. Wataru smirked, feeling confident. After all, he had grinded levels, equipped the best gear, and mastered his battle strategy.
"Heh, this guy is a breeze!" he chuckled, launching into the fight.
Using a combination of strong attacks and well-timed heals, he easily overpowered the Dragonlord's first phase. It wasn't long before Wataru dealt the final blow, sending the villain staggering back. But just as he was about to celebrate, the screen flashed red, and the Dragonlord let out an enraged roar.
"You have forced me to reveal my true form! Now, taste my wrath!"
Before Wataru's eyes, the Dragonlord transformed. His humanoid shape twisted and expanded, growing massive wings, razor-sharp claws, and glowing eyes filled with hatred. The final form had emerged—the Dragonlord in his true dragon state!
Unlike before, this phase was no joke. The Dragonlord was incredibly fast, attacking relentlessly. Sometimes, he struck twice in a row, barely giving Wataru time to react. His fire breath was devastating, wiping out huge chunks of HP in a single hit.
"Damn! This guy actually hits hard!"
But Wataru refused to panic. He had prepared for this moment. Adopting a more defensive strategy, he focused on guarding and healing, striking only when the Dragonlord paused between attacks. He also took advantage of his Magic Barrier spell, reducing the fire damage significantly. The battle was long and intense, but eventually, after a final, powerful slash of his True Erdrick Sword, Wataru emerged victorious!
The Dragonlord let out a final roar before collapsing. As his body disintegrated into darkness, his last words echoed:
"ARGHHH... Darkness overtakes me... But know this... Even if I perish, evil shall never fade from this world..."
A prompt appeared:
"Thou hast done well in defeating the Dragonlord. The darkness has lifted, and peace returns to the land."
The screen faded, transitioning Wataru back to Tantegel Castle, where the kingdom awaited its hero.
Upon arriving at Tantegel Castle, King Lorik greeted him with great fanfare:
"Thou hast brought peace to our land! Alefgard is forever in thy debt."
"As a reward, I offer thee my throne! Wilt thou rule over this land as king?"
A choice appeared: Yes or No?
Wataru burst out laughing. "Become King? That sounds boring as hell! I want to keep adventuring!"
Without hesitation, he selected NO.
Wataru's character expressed a desire for new adventures, declining the throne. Just then, Princess Gwaelin stepped forward with a soft smile.
"Hero, wilt thou take me with thee?"
"Hoo? The princess wants to come with me?" Wataru smirked. "Of course! I'm the hero who saved the world, after all!"
With a big grin, he selected YES, and together, they left the castle, hand in hand, ready to explore new lands.
An 8-bit cutscene played, showing Wataru's hero walking off into the sunset with the princess. A text scroll followed:
"And so the tale comes to an end. But one day, a new legend shall be born."
Just as Wataru thought the game was over, a new prompt appeared:
"Continue the story?"
"WHOA! It's not over?! Let's see what's next!" Wataru eagerly pressed YES.
The screen transitioned to another 8-bit cutscene. The narration explained that 100 years after Wataru defeated the Dragonlord, his descendants established three great kingdoms: Midenhall, Cannock, and Moonbrooke. But now, darkness had returned.
Wataru's eyes widened. "What!? My character has become a legend now?! So cool!" Then the scene continued.
One day, the evil sorcerer Hargon launched a devastating attack on Moonbrooke Castle, killing the king and plunging the land into chaos.
Inside Midenhall Castle, a soldier, barely alive, staggered into the throne room to deliver dire news.
Wounded Soldier: "Your Majesty… Terrible news… Hargon has attacked Moonbrooke… The king is dead… The princess is missing… (collapses and dies)."
The King of Midenhall turned to his son—the new player character.
A prompt appeared: "Name your character."
"What, I get to name a new hero now?" Wataru grinned. He decided on 'Wataruni'—basically Wataru 2. "Heh, the OG Wataru is the previous one!" he laughed.
The King of Midenhall then gave his command:
"My son, you must stop Hargon. Go forth and seek your cousins. Only together can you defeat him."
Suddenly, Wataruni's sprite glowed, and a message appeared:
"The Ancestor's Spirit watches over you."
To Wataru's shock, Wataruni inherited the entire inventory of the original Wataru that had already become a legend!
"WHOA! That's so cool! They actually integrated the story into the gameplay!"
Wataru then start exploring the new area and unlike before, the enemies started at level 20, meaning battles were much tougher. Fortunately, Wataruni was already level 20 at the start, since the level system carried over from the first game.
After some battles, he progressed far enough to meet his first party member—the Prince of Cannock!
"Wait… WHAT?! I can have more than one character now?!"
The Prince of Cannock wielded a hammer and specialized in defending allies and taunting enemies. He was the ultimate tank, while the main character Wataruni could switch weapon types, each granting different abilities! For example, if he wielded a sword and shield, his spells would closely resemble those of the previous hero, offering a balanced mix of offense and defense. If he opted for a Greatsword, his attack power would increase significantly, but at the cost of lowered defense. On the other hand, using dual swords would allow him to strike more frequently, enhancing his offensive capabilities but making him more vulnerable to enemy attacks.
"This is insane! I can actually customize my hero now?!"
Wataru continued playing, reaching the city of Hamlin, where he discovered that the Princess of Moonbrooke had been cursed—transformed into a dog!
To lift the curse, Wataruni and his party had to find the Mirror of Ra, hidden in the Tower of the Wind. After an intense dungeon crawl, they retrieved the artifact and restored the princess.
When she joined the party, an 8-bit portrait of her appeared on-screen.
The princess specialized in magic and healing, making her essential to the team. With the full party assembled, Wataru knew this adventure was only getting started.
"Whoa, she's actually badass, useful, AND beautiful?!"
Wataru continued his adventure, until he found something he didn't expect in a certain cave!
To be continued…
