Chapter 21: 21 Collective Amnesia, Is That It?
Hojou Kyousuke returned to his apartment from the train station and froze the moment he opened the door.
"Weird... Why did I get home so late? I barely have enough time for kendo practice today."
Shaking his head, he decided not to dwell on it.
He quickly took off his school uniform, changed into shorts and a tank top, and stepped out onto the balcony to practice his cuts.
Since he lived in an apartment, he avoided any footwork-heavy techniques.
The next morning, Hojou Kyousuke jogged to school with his sword bag slung over his back.
"Phew, made it. At least I'm not late."
He had missed his usual train and had no choice but to run to school.
Thankfully, his apartment was only two stations away.
"Hey, what's in that bag?"
Two senior students tasked with monitoring school discipline stood at the entrance, their sleeves rolled up, looking intimidating.
One of them pointed at his bag.
"It's a shinai," Kyousuke said as he unzipped the bag to show them.
"Why are you bringing a shinai to school?"
He hesitated.
He was about to explain that he was in the kendo club, but then he noticed that one of the seniors was also holding a shinai.
Not wanting to create an awkward situation, he quickly improvised.
"I... want to join the kendo club, so..."
Kyousuke trailed off.
If it were Sakura, she'd probably come up with some ridiculous but convincing excuse on the spot.
He found himself missing her quick wit.
Luckily, the senior with the shinai stepped in to help.
"Hey, kid, good choice! The kendo club is the strongest club in Higashi High. If you join, you'll be my junior."
"Akashi, give it a rest. Do you ever stop talking about kendo?"
"Remember my name—Akashi Takeomi. If you make it into the club, I'll look out for you. Now, get going."
Kyousuke thanked the enthusiastic senior before dashing inside.
He had decided to carry his shinai with him because something about this school felt... off.
It was known for its exceptional academic achievements, yet there was an unusual amount of delinquency.
First, there were no strict hairstyle rules.
Yesterday, his class had openly featured a student with spiky yellow hair, another with a purple pompadour, and a third with a brown bun.
He knew people could have wild hair colors, but seeing such extravagant styles in a prestigious school was a first.
During introductions, five students even boldly declared themselves delinquents and called themselves the "Higashi Five." Even stranger, the teacher didn't seem to care.
From classroom chatter, Kyousuke also learned that actual delinquent gangs operated within the school.
But what really convinced him that something was up was the girl he had spotted at the entrance on the first day.
[Tokyo Revengers – Tachibana Hinata (Supporting Character)]
Where there's a famous name, there's trouble.
Kyousuke was absolutely certain of this.
That's why he decided to keep his shinai on hand at all times.
His kendo skills made up 90% of his combat ability, and while he could use any stick-like weapon, carrying a shinai was just more convenient.
Jogging into the classroom, he barely made it before the morning bell rang.
New school, same old seating arrangement—right by the window, classic protagonist spot.
As he casually flipped through an English book, Kyousuke observed his classmates.
The guy in front of him had the spiky yellow hair from before.
His name was Hanagaki Takemichi. Oddly enough, despite his ridiculous hair, he ranked in the top ten of their entrance exams.
Maybe he was just a middle schooler with dreams of becoming a delinquent leader?
To his right was another blond, but with neater, shorter hair.
He wore glasses and had a sharp look in his eyes.
That was Kisaki Tetta, the second-ranked student in their grade, currently engrossed in his English textbook.
Oh, and there were two familiar faces in the class—Shimada Kazuki and Ishida Shoya. Kyousuke wasn't surprised they got into Higashi.
Kazuki had always been a top student, while Shoya, after experiencing severe bullying, had thrown himself into his studies with relentless determination.
The first period began, and since he was still new, Kyousuke decided to sit through the lecture instead of napping, even though he had already studied the material on his own.
Then, suddenly, a loud yell interrupted the class.
Hanagaki Takemichi, the guy sitting in front of him, shot to his feet, shouting.
And then... he froze.
"Hanagaki, are you okay? Do you need to go to the nurse's office?"
The math teacher, noticing his pale face and sweat-drenched forehead, set aside any thoughts of scolding him for disrupting the lesson.
"I... I..."
Takemichi didn't respond. Instead, he raised his hands and stared at them in disbelief.
"Didn't I get pushed onto the tracks? Why am I here? This is... my middle school classroom? Does that mean... behind me is the 'Sword Demon' Hojou Kyousuke?"
At that moment, a message popped into Kyousuke's mind:
"Detected an anomaly in the timeline. Correction applied."
Unbeknownst to Kyousuke, the moment that message appeared, every trace of Takemichi's future memories vanished—just like the disappearing diary logs in Your Name.
All that remained in Takemichi's mind was a single thought:
"I have to follow Hojou Kyousuke! I must save Tachibana Hinata!"
"Hanagaki? What's going on?"
The math teacher raised his voice, trying to get Takemichi's attention.
"Huh? Why am I standing?"
It was as if he had suddenly woken from a dream.
"Sorry, sir. I just felt a little unwell."
"Are you sure you don't need to visit the nurse's office?" The teacher still looked concerned. After all, Takemichi was a top student.
"No, I'm fine now."
"Alright, let's continue."
As the lesson resumed, a few of Takemichi's friends from the "Higashi Five" glanced at him with concern. But Takemichi was preoccupied with his own thoughts.
"Why do I suddenly feel the need to follow that nerd Kyousuke?"
Even though he was smart himself, Takemichi had always despised straight-A students, thinking they were all boring bookworms.
That was why he and his friends dyed their hair and decided to become delinquents in middle school.
'I should be the boss, not the follower! And Kisaki Tetta, too—I should recruit them both to do my homework.'
'Maybe I should take over the gang. If I have my own followers now, I can't stay as second-in-command.'
'And who the hell is Tachibana Hinata? Why do I feel like I need to save her?'
Brushing the thought aside, Takemichi went back to daydreaming about his future as a delinquent leader.
Meanwhile, Kyousuke paid no mind to the incident, instead he was pondering the strange missed call on his phone.
The call had come from Itomori, lasting only one second before disconnecting.
After racking his brain, he couldn't think of anyone who would call him from there.
"Probably just a spam call," he muttered, putting it out of his mind.
