Junior Medical Officer Marsha Wilson set the tablet down next to the acting captain. As the
acting Chief Medical Officer she was part of a different chain of command from the rest of the crew.
Thinking about the Medical Section's operational orders she was glad. Thankfully she could still keep
those details a secret without alerting the crew.
The battle had been hard on her, when the first weapon salvo hit their ship a power surge arced to
the medical bay's isolated grid. Unfortunately one of the Nano Surgeons acted as a ground, and exploded.
Killing the Medical 2nd
officer instantly. Marsha was assigned to the graveyard-shift because of her
stubborn belief that a doctor has sovereign authority over her patients. When the shock of the first barrage
wore off Marsha threw her patient out of his cot, he was off duty with an STD that had managed to make
it onto the ship and turned to the other patients around her and shouting, “If you aren't dead or dieing
report to your duty station; you three clear this corpse and clean this station. Brancof, you're the ranking
officer, clear the waiting room for triage.”
By the third exchange she admitted to herself that they were fighting a losing battle. Whatever
was special about their experimental vessel it left it vulnerable to every form of conventional weaponry.
Eventually their boarding parties managed to disable the enemy vessels. The enemy responded by
boarding the Ghoul en masse. At some point the enemy vessels were destroyed.
The boarding battle took 3 days. Marsha and the other survivors ended up in the quarantine ward.
Core life support went down. With all the boarders and the active combat the oxygen was used up before
the problem was even noticed. It was a week before Marsha decided to see why the sounds of fighting had
stopped.
