Chapter 23 - Win Over People (2)
Xiao Cui didn’t expect the topic to go this far. The expression on her face became a bit awkward. Finally, she thought of An Fulang’s expectations for her and quickly changed the topic.
“What you are saying? I am just a maid who serves in the kitchen and am just a low maid. How could I become a personal maid? Even if the fulang need a personal maid, it would have to be chosen from among the sisters. It’s not my turn yet. Even if I could live with my sisters now, it’s just a favor from An Fulang and Sister Qing Yue. It’s already a blessing for me, so I don’t dare to ask for anything more.”
Xiao Cui came clean with her current identity and her place. In fact, these maids who praised her so much, usually didn’t treat her well. Sure enough, after hearing Xiao Cui’s words that belittled herself and promoted others, the eyes of these maids lost some of their disgust and gained a bit more of arrogance.
Xiao Cui slowly breathed a sigh of relief and then smiled, saying, “Sisters, I saved my own money to buy this lip balm. You also know that I work in the kitchen every day, and I don’t look as bright as the sisters. I thought, spending some money to buy some things to dress up might help me match the sisters. If I meet Miss Qing Yue like this, I might gain her approval, then it would make me worthy being with all the sisters in this dormitory.”
“You are quite motivated.”
One of the maids, Jin Huan, who served in the old madam’s room and was quite proud among the group of maids, commented.
Jin Huan walked straight through the crowd, picked up the box containing Xiao Cui’s lip balm, looked at it carefully, and gently smelled it. Then she looked down at Xiao Cui and said softly, “Your lip balm smells good. Where did you buy it? How much did it cost?”
Xiao Cui knew that Jin Huan received a lot of rewards from following the old madam and must have no shortage of money. So, she quickly said, “I bought this lip balm from a private vendor for one tael of silver per box.”
Upon hearing this price, the maids took a breath, as if they didn’t expect a maid like Xiao Cui to have the courage to spend so much money on such a small jar of lip balm.
Everyone started talking, and the room was filled with chirping sounds.
Only Jin Huan looked at Xiao Cui sideways, then put down the lip balm and said commandingly, “It’s not expensive to buy this kind of lip balm at this price. Can you still go out these days? If you can, buy a box for me.”
Xiao Cui didn’t expect Jin Huan to be so direct and couldn’t react for a moment.
Seeing Xiao Cui stunned, Jin Huan didn’t say anything more. She just took out a silver ingot from her purse, placed it in Xiao Cui’s hand, and warned, “Please help me buy it as soon as possible, preferably within this week.”
Xiao Cui looked at the money in her hand, feeling a cold thrill. She quickly came to her senses and nodded desperately, “Yes, Sister Jin Huan, I understand. I will buy it for you as soon as possible.”
When Jin Huan saw Xiao Cui’s response, she took the lip balm and looked at it and smelled it again, then gave it back to Xiao Cui, and turned around to get ready for bed.
Seeing that the well-informed Jin Huan bought the lip balm so quickly, the other maids become a bit impatient, thinking it must be a good thing. Since it was a good thing, they wanted it too. After all, they could still save a bit of money.
The maids stared at the lip balm in Xiao Cui’s hand and struggled for a long time. They also asked Xiao Cui numerous questions. Some of them even tried the lip balm at Xiao Cui’s encouragement.
Eventually, they seemed to have made up their minds and asked Xiao Cui to bring them a box each.
Most of these maids wanted to buy in small quantities, and they agreed with Xiao Cui on fifteen boxes of lip balm.
.
After Xiao Cui finished recounting her experience, she finally looked at An Yun with some confusion and said with a hint of worry, “I originally wanted to tell the fulang about this earlier, but you were still sick at the time, so I didn’t say anything. I just wanted you to be well before I talked.”
An Yun thought this was quite a thrill. He just provided Xiao Cui with a sales idea, and Xiao Cui executed it so well, far beyond his original expectations. He thought that if he could open a store in the future, he would definitely have Xiao Cui work there to help attract customers.
However, An Yun quickly realized he was overthinking. With his current situation, let alone opening a store, just managing to live well was a significant challenge.
After a moment’s thought, An Yun said, “Since you have already collected the money, you can give them the lip balm from my room today to avoid breaking your trust.”
Xiao Cui nodded and took the lip balm away before Lu He returned.
An Yun watched Xiao Cui’s departing figure, holding the purse she gave him. He needed to focus on recovering before he could start making more lip balm.
Yet, while handling these matters, An Yun still needed to continue pleasing the young master.
Thinking of this, An Yun touched his face, as if he could still feel the force the young master had pinched him that day. Although the young master’s interests were somewhat strange, he was very good to him.
Whether it was because the young master could take care of him when he fell ill, or because he was grateful that the young master opened the warehouse to treat him without hesitation, An Yun felt he must continue to please the young master.
