Chapter 21 - Indulged (2)
After rummaging for a while, the cook showed some confusion on her face, shook her head at Chef Zheng, and then smiled apologetically at An Yun. “An Fulang, Chef Zheng, we have run out of gauze.”
Chef Zheng frowned, glanced at An Yun who was standing there, and immediately said, “An Fulang, if you are not in a hurry, just wait here, and I will go to the housekeeping department to get some for you.”
An Yun felt that this was what he wanted and felt it was inappropriate to ask Chef Zheng to run errands for him. He quickly stopped him and politely said he could just go.
Chef Zheng wanted to use this opportunity to establish a relationship with An Yun, so he didn’t want An Yun to do such a favor.
After some hesitation, An Yun finally asked for the direction to the warehouse in the mansion and walked over by himself.
Xiao Cui was originally going to help An Yun, but now that she had finished her work, she quickly told the cook and left quickly behind An Yun.
The cook looked at Xiao Cui’s retreating figure, frowned, and cursed silently, “You little whore with no rules!” She dared not take her seriously now.
The maid who was following next to her came up and complained, “Xiao Cui has climbed up a high branch. She runs around every day and doesn’t take you seriously at all.”
When the cook heard this, she frowned even more. She was about to say something further, but Chef Zheng, who was standing nearby, spoke first and smiled at them. “Regardless of whether she has any rules or not, the house has always followed the rule of who has the most powerful position. Now that she has the favor of the fulang, she doesn’t have to follow the rules. In the future, you should talk less.”
The cook and the cleaning maid were startled by Chef Zheng’s sudden voice and immediately fell silent.
The cook looked at the smiling Chef Zheng with a bit of discomfort on her face as she was being reprimanded. Her expression was a little embarrassed. “Chef Zheng is right. I was wrong just now.”
After saying that, looking at Chef Zheng leaving with his hands behind his back, the cook turned around and glared at the little maid next to her. She said in a somewhat displeased tone, “What were you talking about just now?”
Seeing that the cook was scolding Xiao Cui but was now taking it out on her, the cleaning maid felt reluctant but didn’t dare to talk back. She could only lower her head, tug at her clothes unhappily, and feel angry at Xiao Cui in her heart.
Obviously, they were all the same maidservants and were supposed to do the same work. Why was it that Xiao Cui was now living happily on high branches, while she had to stay there and be beaten and scolded?
“What are you still standing here for? Hurry up and get to work! There are still a lot of things to do. Do you have any eyesight? Is this how I teach you on weekdays?”
The scolded maid heard the reprimands and, seeing the cook glaring at her, quickly lowered her head and said, “Yes, yes, I’ll do the work right away.”
.
An Yun walked out of the kitchen, and within a few steps, he heard movement behind him. He turned around and saw that it was Xiao Cui following him.
An Yun said nothing and led Xiao Cui toward the direction Chef Zheng had pointed out.
When they arrived, before they entered, they saw a lot of people standing at the door of the room. Everyone was holding something in their hands, coming in and out, looking quite busy.
It was supposed to be a lively scene, but because no one spoke, it felt a bit eerie.
An Yun looked at this scene hesitantly, wondering if he should come back later after they had finished handling these matters.
After some hesitation, An Yun decided to go back first and return in the afternoon.
Just as An Yun was about to turn around and leave, a gentle female voice suddenly called out from behind, “An Fulang.”
An Yun subconsciously looked back and saw that the maids, who had been gathered together just now, dispersed, revealing Qing Yue sitting among them.
Qing Yue handed the booklet she had in her hand to a nearby maid. With a smile on her face, she lifted her skirt and walked toward An Yun. “An Fulang, what are you doing here at this time?”
An Yun was surprised to encounter Qing Yue here. Seeing so many maids standing at the door in an orderly manner, seemingly following Qing Yue’s orders, he was shocked by how reckless his actions had been.
Although An Yun was living in the mansion, he still had no title. He was neither a master, a guest, nor a servant. He was here to request something, which was against the rules.
An Yun showed a bit of embarrassment and then whispered, “I just need some gauze. I heard that there is some here, so I thought I’d come and ask if you could provide me with some. If this is inappropriate, Miss Qing Yue can disregard what I’ve said.”
Qing Yue’s eyes brightened as she listened to An Yun’s words, and her smile became even gentler.
“What you said is fine. It’s just gauze. If you need it, just send someone to tell me, and I’ll have it sent to your door. There’s no need for you to go through all this trouble. However, since you’re already here, you might as well pick it out yourself. Once you’ve selected it, you can just take it.”
An Yun felt that Qing Yue’s words were a bit unusual and wanted to refuse again, but her gentle manner left him no room to decline.
Finally, guided by Qing Yue, An Yun went to the warehouse where the fabrics were stored.
There, An Yun saw a room filled with all kinds and categories of fabrics, ranging from coarse cloth to colorful brocade.
If someone unfamiliar had entered, they might have thought they had mistakenly entered a fabric merchant’s warehouse, amazed by the wealth of the fabrics. However, this was simply a storage room for Zang Mansion’s fabrics.
Qing Yue noticed An Yun’s astonished expression as he looked around. She showed no mockery but looked at him with an extraordinarily gentle demeanor.
Seeing that An Yun hadn’t yet recovered, Qing Yue asked the steward in charge of the warehouse, “Where is the gauze placed?”
The steward immediately approached, bowed slightly to Qing Yue, and then whispered, “On the far left.”
Qing Yue nodded, looked at An Yun, who seemed to have come back to his senses but still appeared a little embarrassed, and said with a smile, “Since it’s on the left, let’s go over and have a look.”
An Yun nodded and followed Qing Yue. The place was too large and the items too numerous for him to find the gauze by himself.
Following the steward’s attentive guidance, An Yun found the gauze and was surprised to discover that there were different thicknesses, sizes, and types of gauze.
An Yun was stunned.
Finally, under Qing Yue’s gentle questioning, An Yun came to his senses, chose the gauze he needed, thanked Qing Yue, and went back.
