Chapter 47:
Chapter 47: Brother-In-Law:
Lin You’s attention was caught by the profile of Hacker Xiaohui. The username was intriguing enough, but it was the avatar—featuring a character from Assassin’s Creed—and the tagline that stopped him in his tracks: “All living beings suffer, and the only way to save yourself is to save yourself.”
The words struck a deep chord.
They were almost identical to something his master had often said during his childhood.
Until he was twelve, Lin You and his siblings, Jueming and Juehui, were made to meditate every evening after homework.
Their master’s teachings, often cryptic, emphasized enlightenment: “All living beings suffer, and the only way to save themselves is to follow nature. God’s will is unpredictable, so just follow nature.”
But Lin You and his siblings, rebellious by nature, preferred the first half of the mantra and ignored the rest. Their ambition to defy fate clashed with the master’s call for acceptance.
Curious, Lin You opened a chat window and typed: “Excuse me, are you a man or a woman?”
The response didn’t come immediately. He stared at the blinking ellipses for nearly two minutes before two words appeared: “Guess?”
A follow-up message soon followed: “Please avoid flirting. I’m a minor.”
Lin You frowned, suspecting this might be a sham account created by Minghui, but he couldn’t be sure. Shrugging, he decided to move forward—after all, he wasn’t here to play detective.
The username had a comforting familiarity, but what mattered was getting the job done.
He outlined his requirements and requested a quote.
After a brief silence, the reply came: “8 Ws”—80,000 yuan.
Lin You minimized the chat and searched for other options.
While Hacker Xiaohui seemed vaguely familiar, he wanted to explore alternatives and check the market rates. Minghui was only fourteen, and while academically gifted, she’d never displayed any talent in programming or hacking.
After contacting several others, Lin You received quotes ranging from 10,000 to 200,000 yuan. One company quoted over 300,000 yuan, offering additional services like game publishing and operation.
Lin You declined, wary of bundled services that might compromise quality, but he left the door open for future contact.
Returning to Hacker Xiaohui, he typed: “OK!”
The response was almost immediate: “You’re not going to bargain?”
Smiling, Lin You replied: “Deliver it within a week, and I’ll pay a deposit if the work is satisfactory.”
The reply was confident: “Four days!”
Lin You hesitated, wondering if the person was overconfident. If they were a novice, the project could end up riddled with bugs. Still, he decided to take the risk. The person’s boldness was intriguing.
He transferred 40,000 yuan, but the payment was redirected to Bitcoin. Despite its volatility, Lin You complied.
After completing the transaction, Lin You realized it was almost noon.
His stomach growled in protest. He decided to make instant noodles but was interrupted by a phone call from Li Ruochen.
“Lin You,” said a low voice on the other end, “Teacher Yuan is furious. She said if you don’t show up today, she’ll report you to the office and have you expelled.”
Lin You froze. “Didn’t I ask you to request leave for me?”
“I did, but she only approved one day. It’s been three. She’s calling it truancy now, and she wants to meet your parents.”
This was serious.
Everyone at school, including Teacher Yuan, assumed Lin You was an orphan. He had always handled everything himself—from enrollment to meal cards to activities requiring parental involvement.
Teacher Yuan, usually protective of his dignity, had never pushed this far. With the college entrance exams approaching, her concern was understandable.
Lin You decided it was best to return. Besides, he was curious about Teacher Yuan’s connection to her “fake turtle” first love.
He put away the instant noodles and left the internet café.
At the front desk, the usual manager was absent, leaving Lin You annoyed.
He had wanted her to secure his private room, as thefts were common in such semi-open spaces.
When he arrived at school, he ran into Zhang Xi, who exclaimed, “Where have you been? I’ve been waiting an hour! Hurry up, Teacher Yuan is waiting in the office.”
Lin You headed to the office and knocked on the door. Without waiting for a response, he pushed it open—a habit among students—but immediately froze and stepped back, shutting the door.
Inside, he had seen a man kissing Teacher Yuan passionately.
The man quickly pulled away, straightened his clothes, and wiped his mouth, trying to regain composure.
Lin You knocked again and waited for permission before entering.
Teacher Yuan looked flustered, her cheeks red, and the buttons on her blouse undone, revealing her slender neck and part of her chest.
Turning to the man, she whispered, “Haochen, wait for me outside. I need to talk to my student.”
Lin You recognized the man—Zhou Haochen, Teacher Yuan’s first love and the scumbag who had recently returned from abroad.
Clearly irritated, Zhou Haochen feigned politeness. “Alright, Shang Jie, take your time. I’ll wait outside.”
As he left, he muttered, “I’ve told you so many times—your job pays almost nothing, and it’s exhausting. Why not quit and help me with my business? I can take care of you.”
Lin You hadn’t planned to engage with the man, but his smug attitude was insufferable.
When Zhou Haochen glanced back with disdain, Lin You couldn’t resist.
With an exaggerated grin, he called out, “Is it really you? Brother-in-law!”
