After Becoming A Girl, My Best Friend Kept Hitting On Me

Chapter 35: Chapter 35: Father

"I'm such a terrible person!"

"Seriously!"

Gao Dong turned his head in confusion, looking at his deskmate who had suddenly lost it.

He glanced at the test paper on An Yuan's desk and immediately understood. "Dude, if you can't solve some of the problems, don't stress over it. Just ask the teacher for help."

"You don't get it…"

"I really don't! Math has always been a 'whatever happens, happens' kind of subject for me." Gao Dong joked. "If you don't understand it, you just don't. No matter how hard you think about it, it won't help. Unlike literature, at least if you think hard enough, you might recall something useful."

"..."

Their conversation wasn't even on the same wavelength.

An Yuan sighed, put down his pen, and started tidying up his desk, getting ready to go home.

Chen Cheng trusted him so much, she even went as far as wearing a dress for him, yet what was going on in his head right now?

They had been brothers for decades! How did things change so much in just two weeks?

He tried to recall what Chen Cheng looked like in his past life, hoping to snap himself out of it.

Back then, he had thought Chen Cheng was just a slightly handsome guy. Quiet, introverted, always wearing glasses with a bookish vibe. A bit too socially anxious, which explained why he never found a girlfriend…

But now, when he thought back, it was like there was a soft-focus filter over his memories.

Wait— wasn't Chen Cheng in the past kind of cute?

Damn it! His brain was completely messed up!

An Yuan knocked his own head and muttered, "I need to get a girlfriend."

At least that way, he could shift his attention away from his brother before things got even weirder.

But for some reason, Chen Cheng never seemed happy when he tried to date. She would always find ways to talk him out of it.

Was it really just as simple as what she claimed? Or… did she just not want to see him in a relationship?

—No way, could she like me?

Even though An Yuan was going through puberty, he still had some common sense. With Chen Cheng's personality, the idea that she liked men was just too ridiculous.

The bell rang.

Within minutes, Chen Cheng had packed up her bag and slung it over one shoulder, standing by An Yuan's desk like nothing had happened.

As long as An Yuan still saw her as a guy, she could feel at ease. After all, An Yuan was completely straight, no doubt about that.

"An Yuan, let's go home."

Because of his guilt, An Yuan avoided making eye contact with her. He quickly grabbed his bag and got up. "Mm."

He walked ahead with long strides, forcing Chen Cheng to walk faster just to keep up.

"Are you still going to the internet café with Ah Qiang and the others tonight?"

"Probably not."

"Too bad. My dad's home, or else you could've come over to my place."

An Yuan paused for a moment and turned back. "Uncle's back?"

"Yeah."

Chen Cheng's father worked as a chef in a restaurant in the provincial capital, so he rarely came home. He was barely present in her life.

Their relationship was distant. Not because of any particular conflict, but simply because they didn't see each other often. It was never the typical close father-son relationship. And now that she was his daughter instead… well, who knew how things would be now?

An Yuan seemed to realize this too. He raised an eyebrow and asked, "Do you think he'll treat you the same as before?"

"He'll definitely give me a lot of money!"

Chen Cheng nodded excitedly.

Maybe because her father felt guilty for not being around much, every time he came back, he would give her a few hundred yuan, sometimes even a thousand yuan, as spending money!

That meant she'd finally have enough to buy games…

Wait, no! As a transmigrator, she should invest the money instead!

"Who knows? Maybe he'll give me even more now! They say sons should be raised frugally, but daughters should be spoiled."

"I mean, it's not like you were struggling before."

In high school, Chen Cheng had been a bit short on money because her mother was strict about finances. But once she got to university, she received two or three thousand a month in allowance, plenty for her to spend freely.

On the way home, An Yuan casually pedaled his bike, taking his time as he gave Chen Cheng a ride back to their apartment complex.

"I'm heading in~"

"Mm, call me if anything comes up."

They parted ways on the fourth floor. Chen Cheng took a moment to catch her breath, hands on her hips, before continuing up the stairs.

It was her first time meeting this world's version of her father. She nervously ran through different scenarios in her mind, worried that their father-daughter relationship might have changed, and she wouldn't know how to handle it.

When she reached the seventh floor, she was surprised to see that the apartment door was left open.

Hesitating at the entrance, she immediately caught the scent of food from the kitchen, along with the sound of sizzling oil and stir-frying.

She stepped inside and shut the door behind her. After some thought, she decided to act a little distant at first. Without saying a word, she headed straight to her room.

her father in this world wasn't home very often, so it made sense to be a bit cold, right?

"Chengcheng, why are you home so late?"

But before she could enter her room, her father came out of the kitchen, smiling at her. "Hurry up and wash your hands. I made you a late-night snack."

Huh? Their relationship seemed way better than she expected.

Chen Cheng smiled politely. "This is my usual time to get home from school."

"What kind of lousy school keeps students so late? What if you run into some creep on the way home?"

"Exactly!"

Her father didn't look much like a chef. He was about 1.75 meters tall, skinny, and dressed in loose jeans and a red polo shirt that looked a bit outdated.

Chen Cheng went to wash her hands before heading to the dining table. There, she saw dishes of sweet and sour pork and steamed red crab, with one more dish still being cooked in the pan.

"I had some free time and went back to our hometown. Picked some fresh pea shoots. Almost done cooking them."

Everything on the table was her favorite! Especially the pea shoots, they were a seasonal delicacy and not something she could normally eat whenever she wanted.

By now, she had figured out the situation. In this world, because she had become a daughter, her mom was stricter with her, while her father seemed to spoil her a little.

Oh well! No point overthinking, time to eat!

Pushing aside her scattered thoughts, Chen Cheng grabbed a cracked crab claw with her bare hands and focused entirely on her meal.

"Where's Mom?"

"She went on a trip with Auntie."

"Auntie from the fourth floor? Why is she traveling again? She just left you home alone?"

Her father walked in with a plate of pea shoots and some sesame buns. He tore one open, stuffed it with the veggies, and placed it in Chen Cheng's bowl.

"It's fine. She only goes once or twice a year."

Honestly, Chen Cheng wished her mother would travel more often. It meant more freedom for her.

"How's school going?"

"Uh…"

Seeing the awkward look on his daughter's face, her father immediately understood and changed the subject. "Anyone you like in your class?"

"No, no." Chen Cheng shook her head so fast it was almost a blur. "I'm not dating anyone."

Clearly, this was the answer he was hoping for. He visibly relaxed, relieved that his precious daughter hadn't been stolen by some guy.

Then, he lowered his head and counted out ten red bills from his wallet.

"Here, take this. Spend it however you want. Don't tell your mother. If you need more, just ask me."

Chen Cheng's eyes sparkled. She was already happily stuffing her face, but now she nodded eagerly. "Mmm! Got it~ Thank you, Dad~"

She really wanted to pocket the money right away for safekeeping, but that would look too greedy. Instead, she just stole quick glances at it while speeding up her eating.

"I'm gonna make a phone call. Take your time eating."

"Mm."

Chen Cheng listened to her father's footsteps as he walked out of the dining area. The second he was gone, she quickly grabbed the money and stuffed it into her pocket. The cheerful look on her face faded, replaced by a slightly furrowed brow.

Then, from the direction of the balcony, she heard her father's voice, angry and loud.

"Why are you traveling again?! You just left Chengcheng at home alone! All you do is play mahjong all day—"

Chen Cheng sighed in frustration, rubbing her temples.

"Ugh… Some things never change."
