Chapter 23: Safe, but for how long?
Massive shapes, roaring and screaming as they slowly advanced towards the crowd.
Their eyes burning with an evil red light, their scaly gray skin gleaming in the glare of distant explosions.
Their claws clicked on the ground as they walked on all fours towards the crowd, heralding a devastating stampede.
The crowd instantly exploded in panic.
People began to jostle each other even more violently, some rushing for cover, others fleeing in every possible direction. Screams of terror mingled with the sound of rushing footsteps, and the crowd seemed to become a disordered mass of crazed bodies, panicking at the prospect of being swallowed up by these creatures.
The soldiers on duty, until then somewhat lost in the tumult, reacted in an instant. Rifles were raised and shots rang out into the night.
The sound of bullets mingled with the howling of the monsters and the cries of terror from the civilians. The soldiers seemed to have been taken by surprise, but their reaction was immediate.
An officer shouted, his orders echoing in the night:
"Close the gates! Close the doors now!"
The sound of clanking metal and locking mechanisms echoed as the shelter's large doors slowly began to close from top to bottom. The air vibrated under the pressure, but Adam knew that every second counted.
He hugged Leo tighter, feeling his little brother tremble in his arms. He didn't know how long they had before those doors closed completely.
The soldiers, still firing, were overwhelmed by the approaching monstrous horde. Bullets were hitting the creatures, but they hardly seemed affected.
Soon, the first victims appeared in the crowd.
Blood spurted in all directions as cries of terror were uttered.
The soldiers kept firing, but these beasts seemed immortal.
Several soldiers, confident in their martial arts, approached, swords in hand.
But before long, the disparity became apparent, and all these soldiers died at the first claw of these monsters.
Adam, sensing the mass of the crowd behind him, made one last effort to squeeze through the narrow gap.
With a final elbow and a desperate push, he made it through the narrow passage. They were inside. They were safe... at last.
Then he glanced back, and saw some completely desperate figures trying to get under the doors.
But after a few seconds, the doors slammed shut, crushing many people in the process.
Human blood splashed onto Adam and Leo's faces, frightening them both to their very core.
Leo began to cry uncontrollably into Adam's clothes.
"Big brother, I'm scared, I'm too scared...I want everything to go back to the way it was..."
"I want to see Mom and Dad again!"
Adam couldn't mope like Leo, though he didn't miss the urge.
"Don't worry, now we're safe and Dad and Mom are super strong they'll be fine."
"Everything will soon be back to the way it was."
He said these words, but Adam himself found it hard to believe, especially when he felt the fresh human blood running from his face onto his and Leo's clothes.
Outside, the sounds of fighting, gunfire and gut-wrenching screams continued for a few minutes, then faded into an icy silence.
It was as if the whole world had frozen, as if everything outside those metal walls had ceased to exist.
Inside the shelter, an eerie calm had settled in. The people around them seemed as shocked as Adam. No sound, apart from the gasping and crying of children, broke the silence.
The doors were now sealed, but the uncertainty remained heavy.
After a while of silence, a thud broke the stillness. The monsters outside had found a target for their frustration and launched themselves against the shelter's armored door with renewed fury.
A new wave of chaos emerged.
"Timmy! Timmy, where are you?!" cried one mother, her eyes wild with fright as she frantically searched through the crowd.
Another father ran, calling to his son in a trembling tone: "Michael! Michael, answer me! Where are you, my boy?!"
These calls became more and more frequent, desperations hurled into the panicked crowd, with no response.
Each cry sounded like a stab in the tension-laden air, highlighting the extent of the urgency and anxiety that pervaded every corner of the shelter.
Women clutched their children, while fathers frantically searched for their sons and daughters in the furious crowd, shouting out their first names.
In the chaos, it was difficult for families to stay together.
Adam, who had found a wall to lean against with Leo, felt the panic rising.
His little brother was tense, his eyes full of tears. He hugged him even tighter, trying to give him a sense of security in the midst of the chaos.
"Leo, it's all right, we're safe, it's just a scary noise, but we're safe." Adam said in as calm a voice as possible, trying to hide his own shiver of anxiety.
Leo nodded softly, still trembling, while Adam felt his heart clench tighter and tighter. He knew that the worst was far from over, and every second that passed increased the pressure in the shelter.
Meanwhile, the monsters continued to pound on the doors, with noises growing louder and more violent with each blow.
The vibrations of the door's metal became more and more powerful, almost as if a storm were coming from the other side.
The monsters seemed determined to force their way through, and their hoarse howls easily pierced the thick walls of the shelter.
