Chapter 2 - The Crisis is a Rock
Kang Min-ji, an A-rank superhuman who had just returned home after getting her fortune told by a rather peculiar man at a card reading shop, was lost in thought.
She had gone to get her fortune told because she was facing an important task, and she had heard quite unexpected words.
“A rock… The problem is a rock…”
Despite her high rank as an A-rank and her cold, aloof appearance, Min-ji was surprisingly timid, somewhat cowardly, and extremely superstitious. She always got her fortune told whenever she had important matters to attend to.
Whether the fortune was actually accurate or not didn’t matter. It gave her a bit of peace of mind.
In fact, the fortunes she got had never been particularly accurate, but she always believed in the results of the readings she got.
Anyway, through such a lifestyle, she had managed to survive unscathed until now and had become a veteran superhuman who had endured 9 years in Hwajin Guild, one of the top 10 guilds in Korea.
The important matter she was facing now was that after 9 years of steadily building up achievements as a superhuman in Hwajin Guild without any problems, she had been given the opportunity to become the team leader of a newly established team in Hwajin Guild.
If she could just pass this final hurdle, she would be able to become a team leader.
That final hurdle was to conquer a dungeon with her team members.
If she could accomplish that without any issues, she would be able to become the team leader of Hwajin Guild’s Dungeon Conquest Team 9.
‘I absolutely can’t miss this opportunity!!’
And she had no intention of letting this opportunity slip away.
It wasn’t out of a desire for honor or a wish to conquer dungeons and monsters as a team leader to help the world or anything like that.
After all, Dungeon Conquest Team 9 was classified as a second-tier team, and it would mainly be conquering dungeons of not particularly high ranks.
It was simply because team leaders received a lot of money. A whole lot.
Moreover, unlike when she was just one of the regular superhumans in Hwajin, the treatment she would receive from the guild would be on a completely different level.
As such, she wanted to do everything she could to conquer this dungeon without any problems and secure the position of team leader.
With her middle-class mindset, she wanted to climb to a reasonably high position and live a comfortable life.
For her, who was more passionate than ever before, the fortune she had received this time played quite an important role.
It felt truly accurate, befitting the rumors of a skilled fortune teller.
…Of course, she always felt that way no matter which fortune teller she visited.
Anyway, because of that, she was paying a lot of attention to the results of this fortune.
“Hmm… a rock, a rock…”
What could be the identity of the rock that the fortune teller said would put her in danger?
It was quite vague to just hear “rock” without any context.
“Come to think of it, he seemed to use a lot of proverbs… Could it mean something like ‘a rolling stone gathers no moss’?”
It could be, considering he had said things like “a tower built with effort will crumble” or “returning in glory”… It could mean something like that.
“But none of the people I’m conquering with seem like they would betray me…”
Well, while there weren’t any superhumans of high rank or genius-level individuals who performed beyond expectations, they were all kind people who did their jobs well. They also got along quite well with each other.
Given the kind of people they were, and considering this mission was a good opportunity for them too, she didn’t think they would betray her midway and kick away their good fortune. It didn’t seem likely to her.
If they handled this job well and the team was formed, they would steadily accumulate achievements and bonuses without having to overexert themselves.
“Hmm, but if that’s not it, then what could ‘rock’ mean?”
It could be literal, or it could be a word containing some hidden meaning.
“…I don’t know. I guess it’s best to keep all possibilities open and make thorough preparations.”
After all, in dungeon conquests, it’s a hundred times better to be over-prepared than under-prepared.
There were about four days left until the dungeon conquest.
Min-ji, having steeled her resolve, began making thorough preparations, and soon the day of the dungeon conquest arrived.
The dungeon that she and her temporary team would be conquering this time was the B-rank dungeon “Temple of the Devout Trolls”.
Unlike ordinary trolls that fight only with their innate physique and wildness, this dungeon was home to rather calm trolls who knew how to use some techniques, making them tricky opponents.
However, for this temporary conquest team led by the experienced and skilled A-rank superhuman Min-ji and composed of B to C-rank superhumans who had all gained some experience, while it was a tricky place, it was just a dungeon they could conquer without much problem.
Nevertheless, they couldn’t let their guard down.
Min-ji and her team steadily conquered the dungeon, and by the third day of their entry, they successfully reached the boss room without any significant damage.
‘Good! We may not have been flashy, but we conquered it cleanly and by the book!’
It’s not like she was going to live as a celebrity superhuman frequently exposed to the media and living a glamorous life, and for the leader of such a conquest team, this kind of clean, problem-free performance was better than flashiness.
‘Now, if we can just conquer the boss well… I can secure the team leader position!!’
Trying hard to suppress her excited heart, she led her team members and carefully approached the boss room.
A boss monster is a powerful being on a different level from the ordinary monsters in the dungeon.
Moreover, since the boss was a troll, a medium-sized monster of considerable size, they needed to be even more careful. One careless mistake could easily lead to disaster.
‘Phew… Calm down, calm down!’
They had already cleared all the monsters inside the dungeon.
Therefore, upon reaching the front of the boss room, Min-ji first regrouped with her team members to ensure they were in perfect condition before entering the boss room.
They checked their skills, equipment, and supplies.
Then they adjusted their formation and calmed their nerves, making thorough preparations. After all, that would make it easier to conquer the boss.
‘Hmm… By the way, I wonder what that rock the fortune teller mentioned, which would be my crisis, was?’
Just before entering the boss room, she suddenly wondered.
The occasional rocks they had seen inside the dungeon hadn’t been particularly dangerous, and her team members hadn’t betrayed her or caused any trouble.
She thought the fortune might have been wrong, but she didn’t mind. She believed that thanks to that fortune, she had prepared more thoroughly and was able to conquer the dungeon so cleanly.
‘Well, it’s good that there were no problems!’
With her heart full of dreams of successfully completing this mission and cleanly securing the team leader position, just as she was about to enter the boss room, she suddenly saw it.
‘Huh…? Is that…?!’
“A, a rock…!?”
There, hanging precariously from the half-collapsed ceiling of the temple that was the boss room of the Temple of the Devout Trolls, where the boss should be, was a rock similar to the one she had seen in the card reading shop.
‘Could it be… when he said the crisis would be a rock… he meant that?!’
It looked similar, so she became very suspicious.
Perhaps the crisis was… that rock hanging from the ceiling falling during the battle and crushing our team?
If she hadn’t gotten her fortune told, she might have just passed it by… but having gotten her fortune told, she was extremely concerned about it.
“Team leader, is there a problem?”
One of the team members who had been looking strangely at Min-ji, who had frozen just as they were about to enter the boss room, asked her.
“Ah, no… It’s just that rock over there bothers me.”
“Rock… you say? Isn’t that just an ordinary decoration?”
“It is, but it looks quite shabby and precarious, so it might interfere with our conquest.”
“That rock? Ah… You mean it might fall on us during the fight?”
“That’s right.”
“Oh… As expected, team leader’s perspective is different! We would have just passed it by… I’m impressed!”
“Haha, is that so? Well, before we enter the boss room, let’s remove that first? Mages, knock it down with a simple attack spell.”
At her words, the three mages at the back of the formation nodded and launched simple attack spells towards the hanging rock.
And when the spells hit, the rock fell helplessly while screaming.
[Argh!! H-how!! My disguise was perfect…!!]
“Huh…? It, it was a disguised monster…?!”
Surprisingly, the rock hanging from the ceiling of the ruined temple was actually a disguised monster!
At the sudden appearance of this unexpected monster, while the team members were momentarily stunned, a roar was heard from inside the temple.
Grooooar!!!
[Y-you brainless fool who only knows fighting!! Do you dare to challenge me!!]
The boss monster, whose aggro was pulled by the disguised monster that had fallen and revealed its true form, began to fight with the disguised monster.
“My, my goodness…”
And Min-ji and her team members, watching this scene, all gaped in astonishment with their mouths wide open.
Min-ji’s shock, in particular, was even greater.
‘N-no way… The identity of the ‘rock’ that would put me in danger was actually a disguised monster?!’
What she thought would just be a nuisance turned out to be a disguised monster!
It seemed to be a powerful being on par with the boss monster at a glance, and if this creature had appeared right after they had finished conquering the boss monster, she and her conquest team wouldn’t have been able to withstand it.
Therefore, her shock and admiration were beyond imagination.
‘That fortune teller, he was a real fortune teller with true mystical powers! No wonder he seemed so mysterious, he was an amazing prophet! Amazing…!!’
The truth was that it was just a random guess by an ordinary person, but still.
Moreover, not long after, when the fight between the disguised monster and the boss ended, and she and her team members easily finished off the battered surviving boss, her admiration grew even more.
‘He said if I handle the crisis well, I would return in glory… This is incredible!! He said there were limits to what he could foresee, but he actually told me everything! He’s even humble…!!’
“Wow… To think we’d catch the boss for free like this… Is this what they call a windfall?”
“The intuition of a real veteran superhuman is really different… To think it would turn out like this! Congratulations in advance on your promotion to team leader, Team Leader!”
With the clean dungeon conquest and the bonus points from what just happened, her promotion to team leader was practically guaranteed.
However, even so, in her heart, more than the joy of that, the thought of that skilled fortune teller occupied a larger space.
‘To think I only gave 500,000 won to such a real fortune teller… Next time, I should prepare three or four times as much!! And as a gesture of apology, should I buy a gift too… Maybe a Korean beef set?’
The image of the highly skilled fortune teller, who now seemed incredibly mysterious due to her rose-colored glasses, had deeply taken root in her mind.
‘I must hold onto him… I can’t let him go!!’
In reality, the fortune teller who gave that reading wasn’t even a real fortune teller, just an ordinary person who had spoken somewhat plausibly, but she didn’t know that.
“Ah, this chicken and beer bought with free money is the best!!”
She didn’t know that the fortune teller, unaware that his fortune had been successful, was just eating chicken in his room.
