Chapter 214: The interrogation
"Quiet," a loud male voice roared, as a terrifying aura erupted from him, completely overshadowing the aura of the previous powerhouses. It was Drezan, and he spoke through gritted teeth. The military-grade room, capable of withstanding the attacks of Galaxy Realm experts, had been utterly destroyed by the clash.
The hundreds of powerhouses merely flinched before slowly retracting their auras.
"We'll move to another room now. If any of you try that stunt again, I promise the military will send you away, and only we will know what happened here," Drezan threatened coldly. Gritting their teeth, the powerhouses finally nodded, and everyone began moving to a new chamber. This one was larger and fortified to withstand the attacks of Universal-level experts.
It was one of the few such rooms available. After all, withstanding an attack from a Universal-level being was akin to surviving the explosion of an entire universe—truly terrifying. The materials used in constructing this room were rare and nearly impossible to obtain.
Even though Drezan had already issued a warning, he still took precautions to relocate them. He had no idea what the Eldest Prince would say next, and if he were in their position, he would be furious too. The military had sent a few representatives, but from what Drezan could see, only one among the dozen was from the military. He didn't even know how to report this to the higher-ups without causing a scene.
"Eldest Prince… what happened? Why did so many people die? What was the trial about?" Drezan asked the question everyone in the room desperately wanted an answer to.
Caius sighed, turning to look at the eleven others who stood behind him. Except for Liya, who gazed at him affectionately, the rest lowered their heads and bowed.
"It was like this... When we arrived, we found ourselves in a galaxy. A new galaxy—the same one General Drezan once fought over with the Dreadborne Organization. The number of people there was overwhelming. From a central planet the size of a solar system to a one-light-year radius around it—everything was filled with humans.
"Just then, a voice echoed around us, saying the trial would begin shortly. We waited, unsure of what kind of trial it would be... until..." Caius paused, his body trembling slightly—something that didn't escape the notice of the observing powerhouses.
"We had to fight our clones," he said.
The powerhouses sighed in relief. Just that? Ha, their geniuses could surely beat their own clones. Besides, Caius was considered a waste—his fear was expected.
"Forgive me, Eldest Prince," General Drezan said with a slight smile, "but I don't believe our geniuses would die to their own clones."
Suddenly, Caius laughed, a grin spreading across his face.
"Clones, you say? No. They weren't just clones—they were us. Stronger versions. In this trial, you were given one year to defeat your clone, and only one could survive. These so-called clones had 100% of our power. They possessed our bloodlines, knew all our secret techniques—they were us. Worse, they could read our thoughts, meaning every plan or move we thought of was known to them instantly.
"And that's still not the worst part. As we grew stronger, they did too," Caius said, eyeing the shocked expressions around the room.
Silence fell. Everyone was stunned. Could they have survived such a trial? The answer was clear—no. Even given ten years, most wouldn't stand a chance. Yet these survivors did.
No... they thought, the Eldest Prince is a waste. He's probably lying.
But seeing the other survivors nod quietly, it became evident—he wasn't.
"Eldest Prince... you—" General Drezan was shaken. This trial... it was brutal beyond reason. 99% would fail. The only way to win would be to attack without thinking, without intention, without even forming a plan—no killer instinct allowed. Just pure instinctual combat.
It was too difficult... far too difficult for mere 'cubs.' Yet these few survived. They were likely stronger than ever. But what about the others? Shouldn't there have been more survivors?
"General," Caius continued, "those who couldn't defeat their clones within the year were killed. Those defeated by their clones died too. Only those who won survived."
An old man nearby leaned on the wall for support, visibly shaken.
This... this was madness.
The powerhouses were stunned. The Dreadborne Organization dared to kill their geniuses? If they failed, fine—send them back. But to kill them? Do they even know how many resources had been poured into those youths? All wasted.
"General... a lot more people did survive," Caius suddenly said with a laugh, his gaze sweeping the room. "Your geniuses all survived."
At that, many powerhouses lit up with excitement. That meant their geniuses had far exceeded expectations! Their families were finally going to rise in power.
They conveniently ignored the fact that only twelve people had returned.
"...If more survived, yet Caius says only his dozen made it back... then that wasn't the only trial," Drezan muttered, his eyes narrowing.
"There were other trials?" he asked.
Caius nodded, pulling the powerhouses back from their daydreams.
"I never said it was the only one. The next trial... was far more terrifying," he said darkly.
"We experienced all our past pain, regrets, and trauma. That was when even your geniuses fell. Most of them have lived in arrogance their entire lives. They knew nothing of hardship. Their will to become strong was there, but their will to survive was weak," Caius said coldly.
The powerhouses clenched their teeth, their faces dark with rage. They wanted to attack him.
"Don't forget—he is still the Eldest Prince," Drezan warned them sternly. "Make a move, and the Royal Family will deal with you personally."
Hearing this, they swallowed their rage and listened.
