Chapter 113. Ghost Hunting? The Ghosts-Pin-You-Down Kind (6)
Shen Wan: “My wife, of course. She’s asking if there’s a reward for Han Xiaoyu’s case. Officer Xu surely understands our financial situation, so there should be a reward, right?”
Xu Cheng gritted his teeth and replied, “Yes, there is, but it’ll take over two weeks to process. Just wait for now.”
“That’s fine. I’m not worried about an upstanding police officer like you pocketing my reward.”
Xu Cheng didn’t dwell on her words. Instead, he sat beside Shen Wan and hesitantly asked, “How many ghosts are out here? Do they all have case clues? If so, could you please share them all?”
“I was just about to discuss that with you,” Shen Wan said, somewhat excited. “Of course, all the reward money is mine. You don’t have any objections, right?”
Xu Cheng rubbed his forehead. “No objections. As long as you provide useful clues that solve cases, all rewards are yours.”
“Right now, my wife is gathering all the little ghosts. They’re lining up to tell their stories. When I have time, I’ll give you the details of the solved cases first.”
Xu Cheng could barely contain his excitement, almost jumping up. But realizing he was in front of a high school student, he suppressed his enthusiasm and simply nodded in agreement.
He still needed to interrogate Jiang Xulin, and Han Xiaoyu’s parents would be arriving overnight. Han Xiaoyu’s body had already been sent for autopsy.
Jiang Xulin was incredibly cruel. He had poured concrete over the suitcase containing Han Xiaoyu, turning it into the base for a large flower pot in his garden. Apparently, he had personally planted the flowers in that pot. Who could have imagined the darkness and evil hidden within?
Shen Wan did intend to return to school, as she now lived in the school dormitory and couldn’t return too late. If she stayed out too late, the school would surely send someone looking for her.
She hadn’t expected to run into Mu Yuan just as she arrived at school.
She sniffed the air around Mu Yuan, catching Ruan Xue’s scent. It seemed Mu Yuan really did love that female ghost, taking her everywhere.
Mu Yuan was also a high school student, but his grades were much better than hers, and he attended the best high school in the city. They weren’t at the same school.
His visit today surprised her a bit.
Qin Ying floated near Shen Wan’s ear and asked, “Who’s that boy?”
“My ex-fiancé,” Shen Wan whispered, turning her head slightly. “It’s in the past now.”
Qin Ying understood what “ex” and “in the past” meant, but the term “fiancé” made her particularly uncomfortable.
She glanced at Mu Yuan. He couldn’t see her, but he could feel an icy chill around him, as if sharp knives were scraping across his body.
“It’s the aura of a ghost king. There’s a powerful ghost king beside Shen Wan. Be careful, Brother Mu Yuan,” Ruan Xue’s voice whispered in Mu Yuan’s ear, causing his expression to change.
Unlike Xu Cheng, Mu Yuan believed in supernatural tales due to Ruan Xue’s presence. Suddenly hearing that there was a ghost king near Shen Wan, he instinctively gripped the jade pendant hanging around his neck, raising it to his lips. “Don’t be afraid, Xiao Xue. I’ll protect you. I won’t let anyone harm you.”
Shen Wan, hearing Mu Yuan’s passionate muttering, nearly burst out laughing. Of all things to love, he chose a vicious ghost. Vicious ghosts were manageable when weak, but once powerful, they might devour him alive without him even realizing. That ghost called Ruan Xue didn’t necessarily love Mu Yuan that much.
After comforting Ruan Xue, Mu Yuan approached Shen Wan, looking around before asking, “Do you know there’s a ghost king beside you?”
“Oh? Now you admit ghosts exist? Did that female ghost by your side tell you?”
Mu Yuan’s expression changed slightly. “My affairs are none of your business. Xiao Xue is just kindly warning you that you’ve caught a ghost king’s attention. I’m telling you this only out of respect for your grandfather. I can’t help you with anything else.”
Mu Yuan was telling the truth. He came today mainly to check on Shen Wan. Given how well her grandfather had treated him before, if Shen Wan was in trouble, he wouldn’t stand by and watch. He’d offer some help. But if a ghost king really came for her life, he truly couldn’t assist.
“Be careful yourself. Xiao Xue says ghost kings are far stronger than ordinary ghosts. They can easily take your life.” Just as Mu Yuan finished speaking, he felt a heavy weight on his shoulder, almost causing him to collapse.
“You spoke ill of the ghost king, and she’s not happy. She’s on your shoulder now. How does it feel?” Shen Wan hadn’t expected Qin Ying to be so direct, jumping onto Mu Yuan’s shoulder to torment him. She shrugged, “You know how powerful ghost kings are, right? I can’t help you. Oh, why don’t you ask your Xiao Xue for help?”
Mu Yuan endured the weight on his shoulder, gripping his jade pendant tightly. He certainly wouldn’t let Xiao Xue come out. When the ghost king stepped on his shoulder, he could feel Xiao Xue trembling inside the jade pendant, showing how terrified she was of the ghost king.
Qin Ying had long sensed the vicious ghost’s aura and initially wanted to drag Ruan Xue out. However, since Ruan Xue resided in a jade pendant, she couldn’t do anything for now. Unless Ruan Xue came out, Qin Ying didn’t know how to capture her.
“Alright, wife, come back now.” Shen Wan beckoned to Qin Ying. Qin Ying gave Mu Yuan one last heavy stomp before floating back to Shen Wan’s side. This time, she gently placed her hand on Shen Wan’s shoulder, almost half-embracing her.
This was quite different from how she treated Mu Yuan. She carefully rested her arm, watching to see if Shen Wan was comfortable, worried that her strong soul power and heavy yin energy might be too cold for Shen Wan. Seeing Shen Wan’s expression unchanged, she finally relaxed.
“Now I’m your wife.”
Shen Wan was surprised and a bit delighted. She hadn’t expected her ghost wife to become so proactive after death, even showing jealousy!
“Yes, you’re my wife. That guy is just an insignificant ex.”
Qin Ying smiled, casting a cold glance at Mu Yuan. Even though he couldn’t see her, she was still pleased.
Although Mu Yuan couldn’t see Qin Ying, he felt the ghost king’s deadly gaze, which was quite uncomfortable.
“By the way, Mu Yuan, why did you come to find me?”
Mu Yuan rubbed his still-aching shoulder. “Nothing much, just checking if you were dead. Since you’re not, that’s good. Well, I should go now.”
“Oh, right. You seem quite familiar with that ghost king. What did you call her earlier?” If he hadn’t misheard, it was “wife,” wasn’t it? He stared oddly at Shen Wan. A ghost hunter in love with a ghost, and apparently a female ghost at that?
Mu Yuan shook his head vigorously. It was truly inconceivable.
“My wife, of course. What, you can have a human-ghost romance, but I can’t?”
Mu Yuan couldn’t help but add, “She’s a ghost king.”
“So what if she’s a ghost king? Yours is a vicious ghost. My earlier offer still stands. When you feel you’re about to die, you can call me. If I arrive in time, I might still save your life.”
As for giving Mu Yuan protective talismans, it was unrealistic. He was already bewitched by Ruan Xue. Currently, Ruan Xue seemed like a helpless, cute little white rabbit, inspiring pity and affection. No matter how many protective talismans he had, she would use her fear as an excuse to make Mu Yuan dispose of them.
Seeing Mu Yuan about to say more, Shen Wan grew annoyed. “If you say one more word, I’ll have my wife devour that ghost you’re keeping!”
Mu Yuan felt Ruan Xue trembling, urging him to leave quickly. She was terrified of the ghost king’s aura, so he said nothing more.
“I’m leaving then. I won’t meddle in your affairs, so don’t interfere with mine.”
Mu Yuan felt somewhat relieved now. Since they both had their own ghosts, surely Shen Wan would understand that not all ghosts in this world needed to be caught. As long as he didn’t appear before her in the future, she wouldn’t harm Xiao Xue.
“That jade pendant is strange. The vicious ghost is currently residing inside it, and I can’t drag her out,” Qin Ying said, following Shen Wan into the school. “I wanted to study how a vicious ghost could have almost no vicious energy. If I hadn’t been a ghost king for many years, I might not have noticed. I suspect it has something to do with that jade pendant.”
“Is there a problem?” Shen Wan asked, seeing Qin Ying’s concern.
Qin Ying thought for a moment. “I just feel there’s some danger around that vicious ghost, so I observed more closely. It’s strange.”
Shen Wan thought to herself, “Of course it’s dangerous. After all, in the original plot, you perished together with this vicious ghost.”
Ruan Xue had devoured the little ghosts outside the police station, angering Qin Ying, the ghost king. Qin Ying never ventured elsewhere, and the little ghosts outside the police station rarely inquired about outside affairs. They were solely focused on waiting for their cases to be solved, completely unaware of Ruan Xue’s growing power.
Ruan Xue, however, knew about Qin Ying, the ghost king, and had planned to leave this area for last from the beginning.
That night, Shen Wan slept in the upper bunk, while Qin Ying sat in a corner of her bed. Shen Wan moved over, patting the empty space, inviting her to lie down.
Qin Ying shook her head. “My soul power is too strong, and my yin energy is heavy. Even if I restrain myself, lying beside you all night would still freeze you.” She usually waited for Shen Wan to fall asleep before hanging out in the trees outside the dormitory.
“Just lie down for a while. It’ll be fine.”
Qin Ying was tempted and chose to lie down. Instantly, Shen Wan felt a chill emanating from beside her. The ghost king’s power was indeed formidable.
“You should cover up more,” Qin Ying said. When she first agreed to be Shen Wan’s wife, she thought a human would just take verbal advantage of her. As a ghost king who had lived for so many years, she wasn’t foolish. Most people couldn’t withstand a ghost king’s yin energy. To take advantage of her, one would have to forfeit half their life.
After spending so many days together, she felt things had changed.
For instance, lying beside Shen Wan now made her feel particularly good, wanting to lie beside her every night.
Qin Ying stared unblinkingly at Shen Wan, causing her to become more alert.
“Why are you staring at me? If you’re not going to sleep, I still need to. Go to sleep; I have class tomorrow.”
Qin Ying blinked her big eyes, still not averting her gaze. “You sleep. I wasn’t planning to chat with you.”
Shen Wan was really tired and, despite Qin Ying’s gaze, gradually fell asleep.
Deep into the night, Qin Ying felt the places she touched turn ice-cold. She floated up from the bed, unable to resist reaching out to touch Shen Wan’s cheek. Seeing her frown from the cold, Qin Ying quickly withdrew her hand. Her figure drifted out of the dormitory, finding a perfect spot on the tree outside where she could see into the room. Under the moonlight, she rested her chin on her hand, staring unblinkingly at Shen Wan’s bed, a smile curving her lips.
